Wyatt [2] HONORARY DEGREE The appointment in 1977 of Dr. Richard Chatham Atkinson as Director of the National Science Foundation capped an eminent and distinguished career as an experimental psychologist, educator, and administrator. The appointment by President Carter followed his earlier appointment by President Ford as Deputy Director of the Foundation in 1975. Atkinson was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and attended grade school and the first two years of high school there. Instead of completing high school, he entered the University of Chicago in the fall of 1944, earned the Ph.B. degree in 1948, and then stayed on for an additional year of course work. After a period of study at the University of Louisville, he enrolled at Indiana University where he received the Ph.D. degree in 1955. While a doctoral student at Indiana, Richard Atkinson began his important work in the development of mathematical psychology. His achievements in research have dealt primarily with the analysis of memory and cognition and in the development of computer based information systems as they apply to both psychological theory and practice. Atkinson was instrumental in founding the Journal of Mathematical Psychology and served as its editor from 1963-70. His many publications include not only specialized ar ticles but also a coauthored textbook in mathematical psychology which was the first of its kind and one of the most widely used textbooks on general psychology. Atkinson's contributions to science and to education have been nationally recognized beyond the considerable distinction of his appointment as Director of the National Science Foundation. He won a Distinguished Research Award by the Social Science Research committee in 1962 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967. He has received many accolades which can best be illustrated by the three honors conferred on him in 1974. In that year Atkinson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Education. Writing textbooks represents only one element of Richard Atkinson's contribution to education. He taught in the Psychology Department at UCLA from 1957-61, but his teaching career has been spent largely at Stanford University where he served as Chairman of the Department of Psychology. It was at Stanford that he developed a computer controlled laboratory for the teaching of reading skills. Regents of the University of California recently selected Dr. Atkinson to become chancellor of the university's San Diego campus on July I of this year. In 1952, Atkinson married Rita Loyd, also a graduate student in psychology at Indiana University, who completed her Ph.D. degree in 1957. The Atkinsons have collaborated on textbooks. The couple have one daughter, Lynn.
