The New World Embassy The New World Embassy: Rojava is a temporary embassy in the Oslo City Hall, which represents, through cultural means, the ideals of “stateless democracy” developed by the communities of the autonomous region of Rojava, northern Syria. The embassy consists of a large-scale oval shaped architectural structure, designed as an “ideological planetarium.” The embassy will operate for two consecutive days, bringing representatives from Rojava together with inter- national politicians, diplomats, academics, journalists, students, and artists. Through open deliberation and public discussion the New World Embassy: Rojava propos- es a platform to build new transnational relationships and explore alternative models of people’s diplomacy. This includes an analysis of the history, ideals, and implemen- tation of stateless democracy; of the successes of Rojava in building a new civil society in a war-torn region; and finally the alternative that Rojava proposes in order to confront the crises of democracy seen on a global scale. The Syrian civil war has been without doubt the most widely covered war by the international media in this millennium. Having engaged in an armed combat against the IS, the Kurdish military troops, especially the female battalion, have received considerable media attention internationally. This study examines the gender dimension of media representations in national media outlets of Kurdish female combatants belonging to the Protection Units (YPJ) in Syria. How have the female combatants been framed in British and French media? To what extent are these representations gendered? The overall data consists of news articles from national media outlets in France and in the United Kingdom between 2014-2015 that is analysed with frame analysis. The results show that the juxtaposition of female combatants with IS fighters allows depicting the participation of the former as exceptional and heroic and as one that deconstructs the masculinity of its adversary. The role of female combatants in the on-going conflict is represented in the British and French media through the construction of sexualized and modern-day heroine figure that is largely glorified. The PYD formed a military-wing owing to its military engagement with the regime and the support provided by the PKK. Therefore, the PYD has managed to control the PYD-YPG Kurds who previously sided with the Syrian opposition, has declared self-ruled cantons, and formed a sphere of influence as an “armed-non- PYD-YPG SYRIA: NORTHERN IN BRANCH PKK’S THE state-actor” in the north of Syria. In fact, the PKK has started to imple- ment its self-administration model in the cantons, a model it plans to implement in Turkey as well.     Revolutionizing Human Rights: Women and Democracy in Northern Syria Alejandra Padín-Dujon HMRT 400a: Human Rights Capstone Professor James Silk 20 December 2017 1 INTRODUCTION As the Syrian Civil War enters its eighth year, a radical experiment in self-governance is taking place. Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria have taken advantage of civil unrest to secure and establish the quasi-autonomous region of Rojava. The Democratic Union Party (PYD), a left-wing, predominantly Kurdish political and military entity, dominates Rojava’s political scene. The PYD follows in the ideological tradition of Abdullah Ocalan, a political prisoner held captive off the coast of Turkey since 1999. A founding member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) – a Kurdish nationalist organization designated a terrorist entity by Europe and the United States – Ocalan became the foremost political philosopher for Kurdish movements in Turkey and Syria during his time in prison. His model of democratic governance, called “democratic confederalism,” rejects the top-down politics of the nation-state. Instead, it proposes self-governing, small-scale democratic communities that would operate within the boundaries of existing states. Ocalan also promotes women’s empowerment, which he views as the antidote to patriarchy – the underlying cause behind nationalist and capitalist exploitation. In addition, the PYD draws upon human rights rhetoric. Rojava’s first constitution, the 2014 Charter of the Social Contract, explicitly incorporates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Top PYD officials frequently reference democratic ideals and women’s empowerment in speeches and interviews.

The women of the PKK and its sister organization, the Democratic Union Party (Partiya Yekîtiya Demokrat, PYD), represent the embodiment of the PKK’s new ideology, attract- ing international attention following Kurdish efforts to establish an autonomous region of governance in north-east Syria. This article focuses on a case study of the PYD’s Syrian Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Jin, YPJ), and their defence of Kurdish-dominated enclaves in Syria. The analysis demonstrates the agency behind their engagement and the ideology that motivates their resistance to patriarchy in the Middle East. In so doing, the article compares the YPJ’s understanding of agency to media representations of YPJ fighters’ engagement, in an effort to see beyond the tradi- tional victim/peacemaker articulation of gendered engagement, arguing instead for the need to recognize the politics behind Kurdish women’s participation as combatants in the Syrian civil war.     Journal of Security Studies 21 PYD-YPG: THE PKK in SYRIA PYD-YPG : Suriye’deki PKK Yakup ŞAHİN* İbrahim İRDEM** Abstract This study will briefly introduce the common ideology of the PKK and its affiliates in Syria. It also establishes the organic links between the PKK, which is internationally recognized as a terrorist organization, and the PYD-YPG, which has been active in Syria as a political and military force. It will conclude that given the PYD-YPG being controlled by the PKK leadership in Qandil, its ideological unity with the PKK and the shared organizational features, there are no grounds to see these two organiza- tions as separate groups from each other. Recognizing one as a terrorist organization and the other as a legitimate political and military actor would therefore be an arbitrary and duplicitous approach.
