2008 Special thanks to our volunteer photographers: Alan Dunlop (including cover), Catherine Guillame Chow, Dario Sante and Julian Sale. DAREarts EMPOWERING AT RISK CHILDREN DAREarts is arts education that empowers ‘at risk’ children. This is the best day of my life. DAREarts child, 9 DAREarts dares children to make positive choices in their lives through educational experiences in art, architecture, dance, drama, design, fashion, literature, music, – all the arts. You are saving this child from the wrong crowd. Principal DAREarts is a national, not-for-profit organization which stands for Discipline, Action and Responsibility in Education. DAREarts’ 5-year all-the-arts program empowers ‘at risk’ 9–14 year olds who have been chosen from elementary schools in less advantaged areas to become leaders. The children paint, sculpt, sing, dance, compose, design, write, act and create as they ‘travel’ through the centuries exploring world cultures, guided by arts professionals. The children gain self esteem and leadership skills and then return to their schools to teach their classmates. Since 1996, DAREarts has flourished in Ontario and is expanding across Canada, influencing over 10,000 children yearly. The Kettle Moraine High School choirs visited New York this past St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Our EPT Tour Escort was friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, flexible and lots of fun to be with! The little things – incidental information, local perspective, stopping for a hot dog and papaya juice – those kinds of ‘extras’ are what make a trip memorable and unique. Our Tour Escort helped to make this the trip of a lifetime for many of us. The EPT Customized Workshops & Master Classes are what attracted us to your organization, and we were not disappointed.

Melissa Haefele [email protected] www.funcruiseplanner.com 888-309-0114 | 615-309-0114 SEATTLE, WA OVERVIEW Introduction The combination of water, hills and lush greenery in a mountain setting on the shores of Puget Sound make Seattle, Washington, one of the most beautiful urban areas in the U.S. With its efficient bus system, growing light-rail network and compact downtown district, Seattle is also user-friendly. Seattleites have plenty to brag about: There's the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, plus the Mariners, Seahawks and Sounders FC sports teams. There are fine restaurants, good museums and vigorous arts and music scenes. Even Seattle's infamous rainy winter weather has a good side. All that rain helps make Seattle the evergreen "Emerald City" and produces wonderful flowers. And Seattle is where Starbucks got its start, in 1971, at Pike Place Market. Sights—The spectacular variety of Pike Place Market; the view from the Space Needle; the view of Puget Sound from the decks of Washington State Ferries; the Volkswagen-crushing troll and other public art in Fremont; the historic buildings and galleries of Pioneer Square Historic District; the city skyline from Gas Works Park; the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard. Museums—The interactive music exhibits at the Museum of Pop Culture and the adjoining Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame; Native American and African art at the Seattle Art Museum; the stunning Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront; the impressive holdings of the Seattle Asian Art Museum; cutting-edge contemporary art at the University of Washington's Henry Gallery; aviation and aerospace artifacts at the Museum of Flight; gorgeous glassworks at Chihuly Garden and Glass.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT AND UNDERGROUND CITY LOCATION: THE AREA FROM UNIVERSITY AVENUE TO YONGE STREET BETWEEN DUNDAS IN THE NORTH AND FRONT STREET IN THE SOUTH Soaring architectural marvels fill the horizon in Toronto’s Financial District. This bustling business core, centred on Bay and King Streets, is home to banks, corporate head offices, law firms, Toronto Stock Exchange and stockbrokerages and other big businesses. But under the glass, concrete and steel monoliths reaching skywards, a whole other city thrives below the surface and is known as Toronto’s Underground City. The PATH, or Toronto’s Underground City, is a subterranean shopping concourse that weaves its way for more than 27 kilometres (16 miles) beneath the financial core. With close to 1,200 retail shops, cafés and restaurants, the Underground City connects to 48 office towers, six hotels and five subway stations. Upon making it back to the surface, the architectural wonders of the Finance District deserve an up close and personal glimpse. The dozens of towering glass, concrete and steel monoliths are a must-see for architecture enthusiasts, as well as the many public statues and pieces of art dotting the districts sphere.
