2017 Porsche 911 RSR
For the first time in the 911’s illustrious 54-year history, the engine of the 2017 GTE racing car will be located ahead of the rear axle. Basically, what has happened, is that the engineers have turned the engine and gearbox through 180 degrees, such that the engine sits ahead of the rear axle with the gearbox behind it. This development has been achieved without any special dispensation or waivers being sought. www.porscheroadandrace.com

A close-up of the 2017 Porsche 911 RSR front headlights and bonnet This unusual step has been taken in accordance with the rules governing the sport and the class that the LM GTE PRO car will race in, which allows for the ‘optimisation’ of the engine position for racing purposes. While you could argue that this development might be stretching the point slightly, it is perfectly legal and has been allowed by the FIA, WEC and IMSA rules. Porsche will enter two works cars in both the WEC and the IMSA series in 2017. www.porscheroadandrace.com

Porsche decided to retain its naturally-aspirated 4-litre flat-six engine. This decision, along with the rotation of the engine layout, allowed Porsche greater liberty with regard to weight distribution. Another benefit of this revised engine layout is that it has enabled the engineers to fit a significantly larger rear diffuser to the new car. www.porscheroadandrace.com
