President’s Message Lura Moore

Greetings Guild Members !

I hope those of you who participated in last week’s virtual Guild meeting enjoyed seeing many of your friends and acquaintances, catching up on your Guild’s “doings” and sharing in our favorite pastime “Show and Share”.

Your Board members received a number of positive messages for our first effort.

Thank you to members who took the time to take some photos of their summer projects and submit them to our “production team”. We plan to repeat the “Show and Share” and WE NEED YOU to join in the fun by providing photos and information on your work.

We would like to thank Karen Herhold for being our “Sunshine Lady” these past few years –many members and their family members have felt the support and caring thoughts of our Guild by virtue of the lovely cards Karen sent to them. Thank you Karen!

We have all been hopeful that we could beat this virus and return to “normal”. Sadly for now, we must continue to follow Covid cautionary measures. Our members’ health and well-being are our first priority and we must act accordingly. Therefore, we have canceled the November workshop, Linen and Lace with Suzie Liles due to our concerns over the round-robin format and social-distancing.

Lita will be posting the information on October’s Show and Share and setting up the reservation list for that ZOOM meeting on our website.

Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy!

Lura

Note: Please read pp 14-23 on THSG communications and using the website! Very valuable info!! 2

Membership from Maddie Tsurusaki It’s Renewal Time!

Our Membership Renewal period is in full swing. To date, we have 105 members for the 2020-2021 year. Granted we are down significantly from our total of 234 members last year, but the Board planned for a reduction this year due to our move to a virtual platform. We budgeted for 100 members, and we have now exceeded that which points to the resiliency and faith of our members even in the face of a pandemic. As folks get more used to the ease of the virtual platforms, we hope more of you will rejoin us.

Just to remind you all, THSG dues for the 2020-2021 year are due in September and delinquent October 31. Dues can be paid by accessing our website home page and going to JOIN US / RENEW. There, you can either pay through PayPal or download a PDF form and mail your check to the address on the form. After October 31, if dues are unpaid, you will be dropped from the membership roster. This means you can access the website but NOT the members area.

We have two new members this month: Ruth Greenspan and Linda Nelson. Welcome to both of you, and here’s to meeting up on Zoom! Standards Committee

The Standards Committee is not meeting until further notice. Note: Jury Application Forms can be found in the Members Area of our website, at the bottom of the page, under "Standards Study Group Criteria." We will be updating that information as circumstances dictate. Sunshine Committee New “Sunshine Lady”

We are pleased to announce that Mary Ann Oldham, a newer member from Ajo, has volunteered to serve as our new “Sunshine Lady”. She enjoys making cards and felt it was a win-win being our “Sunshine Lady” which would allow her to support the Guild and get to make her cards.

If you know of a member who has had an illness, surgery or lost a loved one, please e-mail Mary Ann at [email protected] Thanks, Mary Ann! 3

OPEN POSITIONS FOR THIS YEAR

THSG is seeking members to fill the following positions starting July 2020. Volunteering is the absolute best way to engage with your guild and fellow enthusiasts – and taking one of these positions will make you an extremely connected member!

Please contact Nominating Committee members Laura Wittman ([email protected]) and Diane Bull ([email protected]) if interested in any of these roles.

Workshop Chair: Organize and manage the Workshop Committee, which coordinates Guild workshops. A full description is at https://www.thsg.org/pcm/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Workshop-Chair.pdf. When reading the job description, keep in mind that, in recent years, the Workshop Committee has expanded its membership and many of the duties in the job description are delegated to its members, rather than falling solely to the Chair. You may also contact our current Chair, Lies Gren at [email protected] with questions about the position. The Workshop Chair is a voting member of the THSG Board.

Guild Historian: The Historian is responsible for assembling official reports, meeting minutes, photographs of events, and all materials relating to guild functions. A compilation of Guild records is given to the Library at the end of each Guild year. A full description can be found at https://www.thsg.org/pcm/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Historian.pdf. Contact current Historian Suzy Swann at [email protected] with questions about the position. The Historian is a voting member of the THSG Board. Calendar of THSG Events

Workshops

THSG workshops fulfill a primary mission of our Guild: continuous learning about our arts and crafts. To that end, the Board offers individual grants of up to $250 for continued education. To receive a grant, you must be a fully paid member for one year, and you may not have had a grant in the past three years. You are not limited to taking our workshops, but if you have your eye on a particular workshop, think about applying for a grant. The only requirement is that you share your experience in some way with the rest of the Guild. Applications are available on the website in the Member Handbook under Forms. If you have additional questions, contact the Continuing Education Coordinator.NB: If a workshop fills, a waiting list will be started. Workshop info will be posted as the future becomes more certain.

The Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild is committed to the safety of our members during all events. To that end, we are following the guidelines the CDC has published for community organizations (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019- ncov/community/organizations/community-based.html) as we plan our workshops for 2020-2021.

Participation will be limited. All participants and instructors will be asked to comply with social distancing, sanitization and face covering guidelines.

We will ensure that the meeting space is sanitized prior to the event. Participants will not share equipment or supplies and will bring their own beverages and meals. We will contact participants with any guidelines that are specific to the workshop as the circumstances arise. Please note that as conditions change, we may be forced to cancel a workshop on short notice

November 19-20, 2020 CANCELLED Linens and Lace workshop for November 19-20, 2020 has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule it at a later date. If you have registered for the workshop your registration fee will be refunded in full.

About Renate Maile-Moskowitz’s artistic background, in short, is multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary, versatile, and crosses many boundaries. Plaited Painted Paper Basket-Day 1 Participants will paint one side of a 25×19” watercolor paper sheet and cut 12 long strips. The strips will be woven as plain weave – 6 vertical and 6 horizontal to start the base of the basket. Then the 4 sides will be woven. 12

Beginning Pine Needle Basket-Day 2 Participants will wrap 9 needles with waxed linen (their choice of color) for 2.5 inches. Then the coiled needles will be bent to form a round or oblong circle to start coiling the rest of their creation. If they would like to start the basket with a agate slice that is glued to a piece of vinyl I will furnish it. Since the agate slices are different colors, I suggest they use black waxed linen.

About the Instructor: Gary Terlisner has been making baskets for about 24 years. He started with reed as he thought that was the only way to make baskets. Later, he was introduced to other types such as birch bark, painted paper, gourds and pine needle baskets. Pine needle baskets have become his passion as it is free form and he can let his imagination go wild.

The Importance of our Communications Channels Caryn Stedman

THSG has numerous ways to communicate with members and with the outside world. Both internal and external communication are important for us to maintain our membership and to grow. Most of the social media platforms provide “analytics” that let us know how many people are regular “followers,” how many people see each post, and how many people respond. These metrics have become increasingly important as we are seeking funding to maintain our operations as a guild. If you have access to any of these, even if you do not regularly use them, you can help us by “following” or “subscribing.”

Here are the ways we communicate with our members and the outside world:

• The Woolgatherer - monthly • THSG Weekly Update – weekly 14

• The THSG website (www.thsg.org) – see the article on the website in this issue • Direct emails for the President – infrequently • Emails from Study Group leaders – as needed • Facebook (@TucsonHandweaversandSpinners) – we have 427 followers (people who have selected to “Follow” the Facebook page, whether members). There are two categories – posts and “events.” You can help us tremendously when you see a THSG Facebook Event by clicking “interested” or “going” and also, by sharing • (@GuildTucson). We do not have many regular followers, but we get a fair number of “impressions” for each tweet. If you have Twitter, please “follow” us! • YouTube. The URL for our YouTube channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTZ3BeC0OiC-2_tt25p4NMg . When you go directly to it, it looks empty because our videos (to date) are “unlisted.” That is so that only THSG members can see them by going to the link in the members only area of the THSG website. But it is important to go to this link and click on “subscribe” so that we can improve our metrics. As of this writing, we have 10 subscribers. We have four videos on the YouTube page: The Knitting, Braids, Beads and Beyond, Rug Weavers and Tapestry Study Group August/September meetings. It is also important to watch each video (even if you don’t sit in front of your computer, at least let the video run through) and it is especially important to click on the “thumbs up.” These metrics are reported weekly and can help us as a guild.

• Instagram – tucsonhandweavers – we have 204 followers • Ravelry – https://www.ravelry.com/groups/tucson-handweavers-and-spinners-guild 125 members • Local calendar entries (Arizona Daily Star, Tucson Weekly, KXCI, etc.) Notices of all upcoming General Meetings and events are submitted to about a dozen local calendars. We have no control over whether they actually get run. • Press releases: Press releases of noteworthy events are submitted to about 60 local media outlets, reporters, etc. Again, we have no control over whether any media outlet decides to run the story.

So please take a moment to subscribe, join or follow as many of these social media communications channels as you can. Thank you! TIPS ON USING THE THSG WEBSITE Lita Doesken FINDING IT

We have heard that some folks are having trouble getting to the THSG website when they enter the name into their Search or URL bar. The easiest way is to type the site’s full name: www.thsg.org Once you are there, add it to your Favorites or Bookmarks. You now will have a link that you only need to click onto that will take you directly to the website.

NAVIGATING IT On a laptop computer, the Homepage looks like this, with the navigation tabs up at the top:

15

The tabs start at the word “HOME” and end at the right side with the word “CONTACT”. Clicking on each tab opens a window with blue navigation buttons. Here is the result of clicking on the EVENTS tab:

Just click on one of the blue buttons to a new place in the website. 16

If you are using a tablet or I-phone, you may not see the tabs. The website may look like this:

17

Note the stack of 3 lines to the right of the word MENU. This is called a hamburger. Tap on the hamburger and you will see the following: 18

The tabs are now exposed like on the laptop. Tap on any of these to navigate around the website.

19

As an alternative to tapping on the hamburger, you can use your finger to scroll down the Homepage to find windows with descriptive lists of what is under each tab. Here is a picture from the first window scroll down:

Just tap the blue button to go to the PROGRAMS tab. You will find blue buttons for Study Groups, Monthly Meetings and Continuing Education respectively. PASSWORD RECOVERY The MEMBERS AREA is only available to THSG Members and you must have a password to log in. It contains great stuff like the THSG YouTube Channel, Board Meeting minutes and the Membership lists. If you have forgotten you password, easy recovery is available. Just login and you will see the following window: 20

Click or tap on “Lost your password?”

You will open this window: 21

Simply type in your Username or Email address and click the blue box “Get New Password”. A message will be sent to your email account with a link to your personal account on the THSG Website. NOTE: The message may go to your SPAM or a folder other than the one you get most of your messages in. MAKE SURE TO CHECK ALL OF YOUR FOLDERS if you don’t see it in your main folder. Click on the link and change your password. After you have changed it, you must scroll down to the bottom of your account and click the SUBMIT button. That is necessary to change your password. 22

If you are still having problems recovering your password, email the THSG Membership chair at [email protected]

(From the Editor: Kudos to Caryn and Lita for yeoman’s effort in keeping the Guild current with the latest technologies. They are true Treasures!!)
