He relies on his sense of touch, sometimes even painting with his fingers. He also uses his ears—jazz music is an obvious influence in his work. Mr. Blackwell says art is “useful in helping me cope, exist, and flourish in the society in which I live. It also helps me to use my blindness as an asset as opposed to being a defect.” His colorful drawings and paintings are delightful celebrations of life. Under Mr. Guidi’s leadership, the small, local company gained an international reputation for its daring repertoire—and especially for its presentation of the works of Sergei Diaghilev, legendary founder of the Ballets Russes. Recently, Mr. Guidi joined dancer and choreographer Jeff Friedman for a series of interviews, resulting in a new book, Ronn Guidi: Sergei Diaghilev and the Original Oakland Ballet. In this oral history, Mr. Guidi discusses his work with the Oakland Ballet, the influences on his life in dance, and his revival of the historic works of Mr. Diaghilev that were revolutionary in their time and may have been lost without Mr. Guidi’s vision. Join Ronn Guidi at the Main Library for a talk about his book and his career as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
