The Government launched a campaign to highlight the risks of undiagnosed lung cancer, urging people to go and see their GP if they have had a cough for more than three weeks. It is one of the horrors of modern life that cancer touches so many of our lives, whether directly or by affecting our loved ones. This summer I will be riding (I want to say attempting but let’s stay positive) 170 miles for Breast Cancer Research. If you would like to increase the pressure by upping the sponsorship, you can send a cheque made payable to “The Strawberry Ball” to my office: Under One Roof, 3a Vine Terrace, Hucknall, Notts, NG15 7HN which would be received with grateful thanks. I want to support this charity because research and early diagnosis are so important, something which was really brought home to me recently when I was contacted by a constituent, whose best friend was told by her GP that she could not have a smear test because she was only 22. She had to go to a private clinic for the test and has since been diagnosed with cervical cancer, has undergone a hysterectomy and is enduring a course of intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While incidences of cervical cancer among young women under 25 are rarer than for those in their late twenties, they are by no means freak occurrences, and my constituent put me in touch with the Mercedes Curnow Foundation, a charity calling for a reduction in the age of smear tests in from 25 to 20 in line with the rest of the UK, following the death of Mercedes at 23 from cervical cancer. I was delighted to join them recently to hand in their petition of over 120,000 signatures to Downing Street (see photo). I have also written to the Rt Hon Andrew Lansley MP, Minister for Health, highlighting the refusal of some GPs to perform smear tests on women below the age of 25, and to encourage a positive ‘opt-in’ policy for women aged between 20 and 25. I completely understand that the need for universal testing for those aged between 20 and 25 may not be borne out by statistics, but what has horrified me not just as a politician but as a husband and a father, is that a young woman who was taking an active interest in her health, was refused a simple test by her GP which might have saved her the trauma and anguish of having to undergo a hysterectomy at 22. I am not persuaded by arguments that the procedure or possible ‘false positives’ are so traumatic that women in their early twenties should be denied the opportunity to allay their fears, and I do feel that the Government must be clear as to why the test is available to women in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at 20 but their English neighbours must wait another five years. Broad-brush politics is rarely positive and I am not proposing universal testing for under 25 year olds, but I do feel that the ramifications of cervical cancer, particularly when diagnosed late, are sufficiently devastating that those displaying symptoms early should not be turned away for doing the right thing. As women of this generation are so aware of the symptoms of breast cancer, I would ask you to educate yourself as to the symptoms of cervical cancer and do not assume it’s an old woman’s disease: it really could save your life. My surgeries continue to be held on the second Saturday of the month in Hucknall and the fourth Friday at Dukeries – please ring the office 0115 968 1186 – if you would like to make and appointment. Rainworth Riders — Pushing pedals for Charities

We are a local group of cyclists and this year we have changed our name to Rainworth Riders.

When we started up we had a meeting to choose a charity that was like us, local. It was suggested by Sandra Overton from the Venue that we do a sponsored cycle ride for John Eastwood hospice, so we decided to cycle from Rainworth to Skegness on Saturday 14th of July.

This year we are restricting the number of riders to a maximum of 14 as all the riders are local to this area and we know each other. We will be setting off at about 9am.

We have been helped so far this year, firstly by the Potters Golf society and Sandra. Also thanks go to John Eastwood Hospice for allowing us to use their logo. Rainworth Welfare for the loan of their minibus to PRIZE competition bring all the riders back after the cycle ride and Norman Ticket Winners (pair of Adult tickets) Baker (at Burgh-le-Marsh) for letting us have the use of Under 16’s free the sports hall after the ride.

Can You Help?

Do you have a hobby you would like to share? Could you support a small group of people to try a new activity? Do you like organising events or activities? Then you could be just the sort of person we are looking for! Volunteers needed for a new local service We are in the process of setting up a new service which aims to encourage and enable people we work with to get out and meet people, try different activities and help to build their confidence . Newark & Sherwood House-hold is part of Framework Housing Association. The people we work with often have little confidence to deal with day to day issues and can find it difficult to get out and about. That’s where you can help. We are currently recruiting volunteers who would work with our staff to support people in the Newark and Sherwood area. There are lots of different ways in which volunteers can offer support, so if you’ve got some time to give, and feel you have some skills and experiences that we could use, we would love to hear from you. All our volunteers receive training and support. If you would like more information on volunteering opportunities, with Newark & Sherwood House-hold, or within Framework as a whole, please contact our office on 01636 672854 or e-mail us at [email protected]. For more information on Framework’s services check out the website: www.frameworkha.org

The End of Contracting Out in 2012 Its a little known fact we have a second state pension on top of our basic state pension in the UK. This is paid for from National Insurance Contributions (NIC). Many years ago it was called the Graduated Scheme, then it changed to SERPS in the late 1970’s and now it is the State Second Pension (S2P). Many people ‘contracted out’ to have their National Insurance payments paid into their own pension. On 6th April, contracting out ended for personal pensions but not for ‘final salary’ pension schemes. Your ‘protected rights’ funds will automatically be converted to ‘ordinary’ pension rights, just like premiums you have paid in. It will still be possible for final salary pension schemes to be contracted out, thus using your National Insurance to subsidise the company pension. Those benefits converted to ‘ordinary pension rights’ will no longer be required to offer a 50% spouse’s pension when purchasing an annuity. This change will mean those looking to annuitize could benefit from greater choice. It could also mean changes to the death benefit prior to retirement, as protected rights benefits where bound by an irrevocable trust and be liable to inheritance tax. This means nominations can now be changed and it would be a good time to review wills and or death benefit nominations. This announcement to the change in pension legislation is a firm reminder of the importance to understand not only how you will benefit from your pension in your lifetime, but also how our loved ones will continue to benefit after your death.

Mansfield Triathlon Club Fleur Takes First at Duston Mansfield Triathlon Club junior Fleur Beilby (9) took first place in the TriStar 1 category at the Duston triathlon. The Northampton based event consisted of a 100m swim, 1.6k cycle and 800m run. In the difficult, wet conditions, Fleur broke the tape in just 17:07, producing an outstanding performance to beat off strong competition for her first gold medal position finish, a result that augers well for the rest of the racing season.

The club’s adult members produced a series of impressive performances at the Ashbourne Duathlon taking three 2nd places, a 3rd and a 4th place. The race was held over a 12k run, 40k hilly bike leg and a final 4k run. Conditions were appalling, with athletes battling windy and very wet weather in the often exposed Peak District countryside. Despite this, the Mansfield Tri cohort put in a tremendous effort. Dean Cross finished in 2:16:51 to take 2nd in category whilst Pete Orme (2:29:28) and duathlon regular Sally Hughes (2:42:33) also took 2nd in category. Jayne Broomham took 3rd in 2:55:57 and Helen Scott took 4th in just 2:46:28.

Meanwhile the club fielded a strong team for the Sheffield Lord Mayor’s 10k. Gary Scott led the Mansfield team, recording just 39:17 which was good enough for 3rd in category. Chris Martin finished in 41:48 closely followed by Anton Newell in 44:54 and Mark Price in 49:17. Sarah Kaye completed the course in 54:17 for 5th in category and Sonia Insley came home in 1:03:40.

The club was also well represented at the Lincoln Sprint Triathlon, race one of the three-race Midlands Sprint Triathlon Series. A sprint triathlon consists of a 400m swim, 24km cycle and 5km run. First in for Mansfield was Chris Shooter in 1:14:11, followed by Dave Oakton in 1:20:48 and Becky Wager in 1:28:21. Daniel Wilson finished in 1:32:47 with Michael Bird completing in 1:44:06. The club was also represented by Johnny Dunne in 1:45:39 and Zoe Jones in 1:47:41.

In other races Clive Buck and Sarah Hutchinson completed the London Marathon in 3:25 and 3:32 respectively whilst Paul Tibble (1:49:44) and Tony Wood (1:55:30) put in strong performances at the Caythorpe Canter half marathon.

Blidworth Under 10’s, can they do the triple? Surely not...... So Blidworth Welfare Under 10’s managed to defeat some of the best teams in Nottinghamshire on their journey to the final of the Notts Shield FA Knock Out Competition. Vernon Park was undefeated for over a season and so our boys arrived for the match, away from home, with some trepidation, but a penalty scored by Edward Burton secured the win. By the time Blidworth reached the semi-final they had played and won against teams from across Nottinghamshire whom they had not played before, and were drawn against a more local rival from the Kick Start League. Under the coaching of Scott Chadburn, the boys play great passing football, using the strengths of every player on the pitch. They have grown stronger defensively as the season has progressed and pulling goals out the bag is a skill the squad have developed, a winning formula that everyone hoped would bring about the right result at the final. The final was played at Calverton Football Club on Sunday 15 April against Carlton, a team we had heard were unbeaten for almost two seasons, we decided not to tell the boys! As the players walked onto the pitch the Carlton parents and supporters sounded hooters and cheered, they were up for the match and feeling confident. A shaky start found Blidworth losing 1-0 before they were half way through the first half, the boys needed to settle down, have confidence in their own style of play and let their football do the talking. Still 1-0 at half time. Into the second half and momentum started to build for Blidworth, you could feel a goal would come but would it happen or would they simply run out of time; defence needed to stay strong, conceding another goal remained a possibility but was simply not an option. A breakthrough came half way through the second half, Blidworth’s passing play that they have become known for built to a superb goal headed in by Kyle Chadburn, 1-1, GAME ON. Suddenly, Blidworth stepped up a gear, now they believed they could do it, winners of the Notts Shield and being crowned “Best Team in Nottinghamshire” was in their sights, but time kept ticking on, who would survive if the game went to extra time?! With only minutes to spare, play was end to end, an opportunity came and the Blidworth boys seized it, back of the net by Edward Burton. With 4 minutes to go would Carlton grab another goal and force extra time, did they have it in them? The final whistle blew, the boys had done it – from 1-0 down they had let their own style of football take them to victory, 2-1. Here they are: winners of the Notts FA Shield and the title “Best Team in Nottinghamshire”. Coach Scott Chadburn, Back Row, left to right: Edward Burton, William Godson, Joseph Parker, Lewis Godson, Connor Ward. Kneeling left to right: Reilly Hodgkinson (Mascot), Joss Kawolski, Kyle Chadburn (Captain), Dillon Hodgkinson, Kian Sketchley. The team camaraderie and the passion to win is captured perfectly with Kyle Chadburn (Captain), Kian Sketchley, Will Godson and Lew Godson, being jumped on by Goalkeeper Joseph Parker, celebrating when the final whistle blew. But how were Blidworth doing in the league? The League title was firmly in their sights as the boys remained undefeated, then suddenly one very wet and muddy Sunday morning the wheels fell off the bus. Quite unexpectedly, the boys didn’t perform to their usual standard, was it the pitch or the style of play of the opposition, who knows but a defeat that day meant that points were slipping away and the opposition were catching up. The boys really needed to win the next match and secure the league title before it slipped from their grasp. That next match was yet again against their old rivals (now known as Blidworth Reds). Once again the boys rose to the challenge and were worthy winners (3-1) of a well played match that was good to watch with 2 goals for Dillon Hodgkinson and 1 for Connor Ward. The league title was secure, won by 6 points. Thanks to Andrew Cashin, the Blidworth Reds Coach who sent a message to all the players after the match saying “Congratulations to the boys who are worthy winners of the game and the league title; the league table doesn’t lie, you have been the best team all season. Well Done”. But is it possible that Blidworth Under 10’s could actually secure a triple crown? They are defending champions of the Four Seasons Knock Out Cup, and, as we go to press, are building up to the final on Sunday 29 April, this year being played at Field Mill. Playing against the team they defeated to win this title last year, and so with an old score to settle, can the Blidworth boys pull it out the bag one last time? We will have to see.... 10

When you take a break, walk around and stretch a little; do something completely different. • Remove any obstacles from under your desk to ensure you have enough leg room. • Never sit and twist your back to use a laptop.

At home: • If using a laptop, invest in a stand or docking station to place it on (available from PC suppliers) as this ensures the screen is at eye level. You should also buy a normal keyboard and mouse to plug in, making it much easier to use the laptop in a more ‘back friendly manner’. • Invest in the best possible seat you can afford. If you are going to be sitting in it for long periods of time, it is important to get one that provides the most adjustability and support.

Open Day at Men in Sheds An innovative project ‘Men in Sheds’ is opening it’s doors to visitors on Saturday 16th June to mark the end of Mens Health Week. The project set up and run by Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire is inspired by the very successful Australian Men’s Sheds movement and aims to bring older men together to put practical skills to good use and be more socially active.

The well equipped workshop in Blidworth provides the opportunity for men to work together on a range of woodworking and DIY projects and to share and develop their skills. The workshop produces a range of handmade wooden items for the home and garden including bird tables, ornaments and children’s toys and a selection will be available for sale on the day, with all proceeds used to support the project.

The ‘shed’ at 4 Boundary Court, Burma Road Industrial Estate, Blidworth NG21 0RT will be open from 10.00am – 3.00pm. There will be wooden items for sale and orders can be taken for bespoke items. Everyone is welcome to visit the project and refreshments will be available.

Anyone interested in joining the project, donating wood or equipment or simply finding out more can speak to the project coordinator Mick Connelly on the day or contact him on 0787 2839570.

The newsletter was set up 5 years ago by myself; Diane Carter the Editor within my business of Marathon Marketing as a form of corporate social responsibility. I was then and still am very passionate about the local area and could see degeneration and many businesses struggling even then with marketing & promoting their businesses. I wanted to offer a competitively priced platform with the ethics of local residents supporting local businesses who in turn could fund an informative community newsletter.

Also I felt that from the history of the local village as a former pit village and with the breakdown of many families, (not only locally but regionally & nationally), there were small groups or individuals within the community that were isolated, lonely or just lacking the knowledge of where they could get support, join clubs & organisations or simply find out more about what was happening locally.

All I wanted to do was offer my small part and after trekking around Rainworth for several weeks to encourage business interest we set up the Rainworth Reporter in March 2007. At this stage can I offer a heartfelt thank you to these businesses who supported me then and many still do today.

The Rainworth Reporter In March 2007 the magazine was set up as a 12 page newsletter with 1000 copies delivered locally. This gradually increased to 3000 copies in 3 years and to full colour September 2010

The Blidworth Focus The magazine began with 12 pages and 2000 copies delivered locally. Through advertising support this increased to 20 pages in December 2009 and to full colour in September 2010. The focus was kindly inherited from previous producers, the Blidworth Focus Forum Volunteer Team.

The Village Voices Our third magazine was started in 2010 with 1000 copies delivered to Farnsfield, Edingley and Halam.

In January 2011, a decision was taken to amalgamate the Rainworth Reporter, The Blidworth Focus and The Village Voices into one, The Sherwood Community Newsletter as it stands today.

The Sherwood is now a regular 40 page full colour newsletter with 10,000 copies distributed throughout the Sherwood area, with a readership of over 50,000. Also at this point we need to remember that Andy Jones our Sub Editor joined us in and has contributed immensely to the quality and design of the magazine. He also supports me with tremendous patience! Thanks Andy

And of course let us thank our delivery team; Steve Hessey from Xpress Delivery & all the local young people who deliver it to your door. Thanks to the local businesses for continuing to support the magazine and the people who regular send up to date news. Plus of course thank you to our readers.

So here's to the future of The Sherwood Community Newsletter and our local area.

You can also view the magazine and any archives at our online information site (Blog). Visit www.sherwoodcommunitynewsletter.wordpress.com

NORDIC WALKING AT NEWSTEAD ABBEY IN AID OF THE KYNAN ELDRIDGE FUND

A Nordic Walking Taster Session was held at Newstead Abbey on Sunday 21st May in aid of the Kynan Eldridge Fund. The event was organised by Pip Bateman of Holistic Health in Newstead and all proceeds were donated to the Fund. The Kynan Eldridge Fund was set up by Anne and Peter Eldridge of Ravenshead in memory of their son who was killed in 2005 and offers one-off grants to local young people using music to develop their full potential. Anne and Peter, who are both keen Nordic Walkers, were delighted with Pip’s generous offer to support their charity. Despite the chilly day, many visitors enjoyed themselves by ‘having a go’ at Nordic Walking and taking advantage of the neck and shoulder massages offered by Pip’s team. The raffle of a bottle of champagne was won by Helen Beardsworth of Ravenshead. If anyone wants any further information on the Kynan Eldridge Fund, please visit www.eldridge- slee.co.uk or contact Anne and Peter on 01623 793533. 35
