Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

Seven species (Dahlica triquetrella (Hübner, 1813), Xanthorhoe designata (Hufnagel, 1767), Eupithecia inturbata (Hübner, 1817), Plusia festucae (Linnaeus, 1758), Calamia tridens (Hufnagel, 1766), Polymixis polymita (Linnaeus, 1761), Agrotis syricola Berio, 1936) are new for Southern Italy, 15 taxa were the first time recorded in Puglia, 87 in Campania, 10 in Basilicata and 20 in Calabria. The great amount of faunistic news underlines the high species richness of Southern Italy, a large amount of which is to date unknown. Key Words: Macrolepidoptera, faunistic reports, Southern Italy. La notevole ricchezza biocenotica, unitamente all’ininterrotto periodo di volo dei lepidotteri, soprattutto nelle aree costiere, fanno sì che solo una limitata porzione della variabilità ambientale sia stata finora campionata in modo esauriente. Distribution and habitat Native to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indo- nesia in hot humid and sub-humid lowlands with mean annual rainfall of 800-2500 mm and mean an- nual temperature of 20-30°C. Often found on river banks and in coastal areas. It is cultivated widely in the tropics within an altitude range of 0-500 (-1000) masl, and even though frost does not occur in its natural range, it tolerates light frost. It is exceptionally tolerant to soil type in regard to fertility, salinity and pH. It can grow on acid mine spoils with pH 3 and on alkaline beach sands with pH 8-9. It does not tolerate shade or strong winds. Isoenzyme analysis has revealed a marked genetic variation with 3 distinct groups corresponding to the geographic distribution in Papua New Guinea, Queensland and Northern Territory. -

Russo Abstract This study summarises the known records of the Macrolepidoptera species of the “Bosco Palazzi” area near the municipality of Putignano (Apulia region) in the Murgia mountains in southern Italy. The list of species is based on historical bibliographic data along with new material collected by other entomologists in the last few decades. A total of 207 species belonging to the families Cossidae (3 species), Drepanidae (4 species), Lasiocampidae (7 species), Limacodidae (1 species), Saturniidae (2 species), Sphingidae (5 species), Brahmaeidae (1 species), Geometridae (55 species), Notodontidae (5 species), Nolidae (3 species), Euteliidae (1 species), Noctuidae (96 species), and Erebidae (24 species) were identified. -

Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind die taxonomischen Gruppen Noctuoidea, Bombycoidea, Drepanoidea und Axioidea. Die Fänge erfolgten überwiegend am Licht. Diese Region der Türkei ist trotz leichter Erreichbarkeit erstaunlich schlecht erforscht. Es gibt für die Provinz Mugla bisher fast keine Daten für Nachtfalterfänge. Die Untersuchung fand über alle Jahreszeiten und an insgesamt 456 Tagen statt. Es wurde anhand der insgesamt über 4400 registrierten Individuen eine grobe Klassifizierung der Häufigkeit vorgenommen. Insgesamt konnten 168 Arten festgestellt werden. Die Zahl von Arten, die trotz derart langer Anstrengungen nur einmal festgestellt wurden, ist mit 25 relativ hoch. Es daher zu erwarten, dass einige weitere hier nicht aufgeführte Arten vorkommen. Für eine Reihe der festgestellten Spezies existieren bisher nur wenige Nachweise aus der Türkei. Eine Art ist neu für das Land. Weiterhin kann bei einigen nahverwandten Arten ein Beitrag zur Klärung von Verbreitungsgrenzen geleistet werden, die z.T. gerade in Kleinasien unklar sind. Durch das vor allem in Sommer extrem heisse und trockene Klima und den milden Winter fliegen einige Arten früher als bekannt. Viele hingegen fliegen später in den Herbst und Winter hinein, so dass eine ganze Reihe von in der Literatur nicht bekannten Flugzeiten aufgezeigt werden kann. -

The pests cause enormous losses both in tonnage and recovery of sugar in the mill. It is estimated about 8 to 10 percent of total sugarcane crop in the country is damaged by insects every year and this works out to a loss of 80 to 100 corers of rupees. The occurrence of drought and flood influenced the heavy buildup certain pests over large areas in epidemic from. (Siddiqui, 1960; Verma et, al. 1991). In general, the insect pest problems of sugarcane are more sever in subtropical belt than the fropical belt. Widespread use of synthetic pesticides has led to the development of pesticidal resistance in a large number of insect pests (Saxena and Khan, 1986). There has been an urgent need for selective and effective pest control methods which can be easily included in the modem pest management concept (Back, 1972) new bioactive products will be needed which are pest specific. Ecofriendly to man and other beneficial organisms biodegradable, less prone to development of pest resistance and economical viable. Insecticides of plant origin provided a substantial answer to many of the problems particularly the environmental pollution and ecofriendly in nature. -
