Renner3 BIOGEOGRAPHY OF LAURACEAE: EVIDENCE FROM THE CHLOROPLAST AND NUCLEAR GENOMES1 ABSTRACT Phylogenetic relationships among 122 species of Lauraceae representing 44 of the 55 currentlyrecognized genera are inferredfrom sequence variation in the chloroplast and nuclear genomes. The trnL-trnF,trnT-trnL, psbA-trnH, and rpll6 regions of cpDNA, and the 5' end of 26S rDNA resolved major lineages, while the ITS/5.8S region of rDNA resolved a large terminal lade. The phylogenetic estimate is used to assess morphology-based views of relationships and, with a temporal dimension added, to reconstructthe biogeographic historyof the family.Results suggest Lauraceae radiated when trans-Tethyeanmigration was relatively easy, and basal lineages are established on either Gondwanan or Laurasian terrains by the Late Cretaceous. Most genera with Gondwanan histories place in Cryptocaryeae, but a small group of South American genera, the Chlorocardium-Mezilauruls lade, represent a separate Gondwanan lineage. Caryodaphnopsis and Neocinnamomum may be the only extant representatives of the ancient Lauraceae flora docu- mented in Mid- to Late Cretaceous Laurasian strata. Remaining genera place in a terminal Perseeae-Laureae lade that radiated in Early Eocene Laurasia. Therein, non-cupulate genera associate as the Persea group, and cupuliferous genera sort to Laureae of most classifications or Cinnamomeae sensu Kostermans. Laureae are Laurasian relicts in Asia. Aniba Rosaeodora Ducke, Lauraceae): an Ecological Approach
Genetic diversity in rosewood saplings (Aniba rosaeodora ducke, Lauraceae): an ecological approach Ronaldo Pereira SANTOS1, Wilson Roberto SPIRONELLO2, Paulo de Tarso Barbosa SAMPAIO3 ABSTRACT This article takes an ecological approach to the genetic diversity of Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora Ducke) in a central Amazonian terra firme forest north of Manaus. Planted Rosewood setting, under partial shaded canopy, were assessed in terms of fruiting production, frugivory, and seed dispersal. Using RAPD molecular analysis procedures, the influence of the spatial distribution of adult trees on the genetic diversity (polymorphism) of saplings was assessed with genetic samples from 34 reproductive trees and 60 saplings. The density and distribution patterns the reproductive trees did not modify the sapling’s diversity (1.86%, AMOVA). Two types of adult tree dispersion were identified; i) clumped and ii) more widely dispersed. Polymorphism (77.5%) and gene flow were high between these. Although more sapling genetic variability in areas with a higher density of mature plants was not as high as expected, density did not affect the genetic diversity of samplings, indicating a high incidence of gene flow amongst trees. In planted Rosewood population (surrounded by low disturbed forest), fruiting trees experienced a high level of removal of seeds by toucans (Rhamphastidae), about of 50%. The high gene flow found among native trees suggested that toucans, promoting seed rain at short and long distances from maternal trees, actively contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity within wild rosewood populations. However, this biodiversity is at risk due to the increase in the area devoted to agricultural activities, the accelerated degradation and loss of the soil, the overexploitation of wood and the effects of climate change such as forest fires, floods and landslides that lead to the transformation of landscapes as they are known. The species Aniba rosodora (L.), in the red book of plants of Colombia (preliminary version February 2006) has been categorized as Critically Endangered (CR A2cd) for the national territory, mainly due to the following factors, the ecosystem in which grows "dry forests of the Amazon" has suffered an accelerated process of destruction by man, and on the other, has been the subject of intense commercial exploitation. -

CCB Project Design Document – January 26, 2012 Executive Summary Colombia is home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species despite covering just 0.7% of the planet’s surface, and has more registered species of birds and ampHibians tHan any otHer country in tHe world. Along Colombia’s nortHwest border witH Panama lies tHe Darién region, one of tHe most diverse ecosystems of tHe American tropics, a recognized biodiversity Hotspot, and Home to two UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. THe spectacular rainforests of tHe Darien sHelter populations of endangered species sucH as tHe jaguar, spider monkey, wild dog, and peregrine falcon, as well as numerous rare species that exist nowhere else on the planet. The Darién is also home to a diverse group of Afro-Colombian, indigenous, and mestizo communities who depend on tHese natural resources. On August 1, 2005, tHe Council of Afro-Colombian Communities of the Tolo River Basin (Cocomasur) was awarded collective land title to over 13,465 Hectares of rainforest in the Serranía del Darién in the municipality of Acandí, CHocó in recognition of their traditional lifestyles and longstanding presence in the region. If they are to preserve the forests and their traditional way of life, tHese communities must overcome considerable cHallenges. During 2001- 2010 alone, over 10% of tHe natural forest cover of tHe surrounding region was converted to pasture for cattle ranching or cleared to support unsustainable agricultural practices.
