  • Hype Machine for Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Other Cubs Kids Kicks Into Mid-Winter High Gear by George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Monday, Jan
Two key men in the revival of the Cubs home-grown player pipeline: amateur scouting director Matt Dorey (left) and Jason McLeod, senior vice president of scouting/player development. Hype machine for Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, other Cubs kids kicks into mid-winter high gear By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 “The best farm system in baseball.” That tagline applied to the Cubs, concocted by several national publi- cations and clasped to their collec- tive bosoms by a legion of ever-loyal fans, further picked up the decibel level in inundating the recent Cubs Convention in Chicago. With Cubs baseball president Theo Epstein’s thorough rebuilding program kicking into a higher gear, the collective praise of his best prospects is driving the long-forlorn mass of rooters to believing they’ve nearly reached the promised land of contention, if not a ticket punched to the 2015 postseason. The fever pitch was best exemplified by a Sunday morning farm system session involving much-publicized prospects Kyle Schwarber, Pierce Johnson, Addison Russell and C.J. Edwards. The last two were not original Cubs signees who were instead obtained in trades for veterans. www.ChicagoBaseballMuseum.org [email protected] Chicago Sun-Times baseball writer Gordon Wittenmyer described the post- session reaction as “the most imposing stampede of fans” for autographs for the minor leaguers of any convention event. Somebody, anybody, should have calmed down the fans to inform them we’ve seen this all before, and to tone down their ex- citement. Prospects are suspects until they’re big-league producers no matter how many Epstein’s organization has stocked in the pipeline.

  • Don't Put All Your Emotional Eggs in Prospects' Future Baskets
Don’t put all your emotional eggs in prospects’ future baskets By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Tuesday, March 12, 2013 Let the baseball buyer beware. We’re now coming out of the part of spring train- ing where we typically take a leap into our base- ball future. The first half of Arizona and Florida drills feature each team’s top prospects working out before they’re dispatched to minor-league camps. The only aspect greater than their momentary feats against often second-line pitching in games is the media hype accompanying their very presence. We scribes and mic jockeys are even more guilty than teams themselves in building up these al- leged harbingers of better tomorrows. In reality, a prospect is just a prospect until he becomes a successful, consistent major-leaguer. He’s as much of a suspect as a prospect. The only accurate way to gauge a promising young player’s ability, and the quality of the player-development system, is when the player is well established in The Kip Wells, pictured here with the Nation- Show. als, was still bouncing around the ma- jors a decade after he was supposed to For want of better storylines of a team coming off lead a wellspring of Sox pitching pros- pects to the South Side. Some 30 miles to the west in Glendale, Arizona, infielder Carlos Sanchez has been the recipient of a publicity buildup as if he’s a potential Gordon Beckham successor.

  • HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY the 2019 Season Signifies the 42Nd Season for the Nashville Sounds
HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.
