This is a public auction and mail-bid sale. All lots will be sold to the highest bidder. Mail bids (as well as those relayed by fax, email or phone) will be treated as limits and lots will be purchased below these limits where competition permits. Lots will be sold on the date indicated. 2. Absentee bidders should be mindful that bids submitted in irregular increments may be rounded to a lower bid to comply with the auctioneer’s established bidding increments. 3. Unless exempt by law, the buyer will be required to pay, on the total purchase price, the established New York sales tax or any applicable compensating use tax of any other state. Lots delivered in Ohio will be subject to 7.5% sales tax. 4. All floor sales are final. No lots may be returned for any reason by floor buyers. Any claims for adjustment by mail bidders must be made within three days after receipt of lots purchased. No lots may be returned without our written permission. By submitting bids you agree to the Terms of Sale herewith set forth. 5. Bidders unknown to us must supply acceptable credit references or a 25% deposit to assure entry of their bids. 6. This is a reserve auction. The estimates of value are intended solely as a guide. Generally, bidding will start at two-thirds of estimate. 7. An eighteen percent buyer’s premium will be added to the cost of all lots purchased by bidders, including those bidding by mail, phone, fax, email or the internet. There is no additional charge or commission for executing your bids. 8. We reserve the right to withdraw any lot prior to sale for any reason. 9. All postage, insurance and shipping charges will be added to your invoice. There will be a $5.00 charge per lot for processing. A late payment fee of 2% per month will be charged on accounts remaining unpaid 30 days after the sale. 10. Terms of this sale are strictly cash in United States funds. Foreign payments must be made in dollars. All checks must be drawn on United States banks, must have electronic encoding, and all bank charges must be paid by the sender. Payments may also be made directly to our bank. Details will be provided upon request. Invoices may be paid by credit card or PayPal, but the bidder agrees to pay a 3% bank fee for doing so. 11. Lots to be mailed to addresses not in the United States or its Territories will be sent only at the risk of the purchaser. When pos- sible, insurance or registration will be obtained. 12. Title to all lots remains with the cataloguer until paid for in full. Payment must be made immediately upon notification or upon receipt of material. The discretionary right to withhold delivery of lots until full payment has been received is reserved. 13. All books are as described. We acknowledge the possibility of errors or typographical mistakes, and any errors on our part will be cheerfully corrected. Burd Numismatic Library Kolbe & Fanning are proud to have been chosen to offer at auction the outstanding nu- mismatic library formed by Chicago coin dealer William A. Burd. The Burd Library is well known to many due to the long-standing willingness of the owner to make his library avail- able for use by other numismatists at his Chicago Coin Company offices. With well over 10,000 items on its shelves, the library strived to be truly comprehensive, covering every- thing from ancient coins to modern banknotes and including publications dating from the 16th to the 21st century. Few libraries can be counted upon for their ability to address ancient hacksilber and mod- ern bus tokens, United States large cents and medals of the Italian Renaissance, Chinese spade money and German notgeld. The Burd Library boasts exceptional scope as well as a depth of coverage that is truly impressive. In addition, the library includes a number of bibliophilic gems that would be the highlight of any library. A few especially noteworthy examples, all of them present in this sale, include: • the extremely rare and virtually unknown first issue in book form of Louis XIV’s col- lection of ancient coins (lot 72) • an exceptional, complete set of Visconti & Mongez’s glorious Iconographie Grecque et Romaine in the original red leather bindings (lot 131) • a superlative example of Ricaud de Tiregale’s masterwork on Russian medals (lot 268) • perhaps the finest extant deluxe copy of Browning on U.S. quarter dollars (lot 336) • a deluxe, large-format Bureau of Engraving and Printing portrait & vignette book featuring 223 superb engravings (lot 481). On a personal level, we would have to say that few libraries have been as enjoyable to help form as the Burd Library. Bill has a comprehensive and wide-ranging interest in numismat- ics, and the scope of his curiosity is reflected in his books. We fondly recall having dinner with him after one of our New York Book Auctions several years ago, and always enjoyed our visits to his office and library in Chicago. Bill has a connoisseur’s appreciation for re- markable books on all areas of numismatics, and his enthusiasm is contagious. An examination of the history of urban planning and expansion reveals a fundamental paradox, for it became apparent very early on that living space does not lend itself so readily to plan- ning. Although the rise of suburbs is usually associated with the nineteenth century, a few "early bloomers" can be identified in urban history. Architects such as Antoine-Michel Perrache and Jean-Antoine Morand, who designed ex- pansion projects in the south and in the east of the city of Lyon, became veri- table city planners, if not choreographers, of the suburbs.

    THE YALE UNIVERSITY YALE UNIVERSITY NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT December 9, 1980 Yale's Numismatic Collection is one of the oldest of the special collections that are such important assets of the University. Its long history has been marked by many changes and one crisis, the great robbery of May, 1965. While relatively few of its total holdings were taken, those few represented a great deal of the commercial value of the Collection. The only coin recovered by the University was its famous Brasher Doubloon. Now, to help alleviate the financial stringency which has come to Yale, the decision has been made, painfully and after much con- sideration, to sell the Yale Brasher Doubloon. The high concentration of value in this single object and the security problems attendant to its being placed on public exhibition have weighed heavily in our deliber- ations.     The Perschke Brasher Doubloon The First United States Gold Coin NGC is proud to present one of the world’s most important and valuable coins: the Walter Perschke specimen of the Brasher Doubloon. Recently graded and encapsulated by NGC as MS 63, Perschke’s Brasher Doubloon is believed to be the finest example of this rare and historic coin. Only seven Brasher Doubloons are known, two of which are held in museum collections. Six of these, including the Perschke specimen, bear the distinctive “EB” hallmark of Ephraim Brasher stamped into the eagle’s wing. The seventh Brasher Doubloon, previously graded XF 45 by NGC, features the “EB” punch on the eagle’s breast. The Perschke specimen is the third — and finest — Brasher Doubloon to be certified by NGC. THE WALTER PERSCHKE SPECIMEN Walter Perschke purchased this Brasher Doubloon in 1979 for $430,000 — then a record price for a coin. Shortly after he purchased the Brasher Doubloon, Perschke sent the coin on a traveling exhibit around the country. “It has since been seen by more than two million people — more viewers than any other coin,” said Perschke. The coin carries an impressive pedigree, including J. T. Raymond, Harold P. Newlin, R. Coulton Davis, J. G. Mills, James Ten Eyck, Virgil Brand, Robert Friedberg and, finally, current owner Walter Perschke. In honor of this long history, NGC has certified this coin as the Newlin-Davis- Perschke specimen. Perschke submitted the coin to NGC in May 2012 for grading and encapsulation. “When I decided to have my Brasher Doubloon certified, the obvious choice was Numismatic Guaranty Corporation,” he said at the time.
