Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Area 3 habitat assessments and pollinator surveys 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer October 2016 (Updated April 2017) Jamie Robins Saving the small things that run the planet Executive Summary Buglife Services were commissioned by Kier Group Ltd in July 2016 to undertake a series of baseline habitat surveys within the Area 3 network, to identify sites where improvements for pollinators could be implemented. These results were then used to identify ten sites with the highest potential and deliverability, using a ranking exercise, in addition to a Kier owned depot. Buglife Services undertook more detailed habitat assessments and pollinator surveys during brief site visits in August 2016. Of the 11 sites surveyed, a total of 104 pollinator species were recorded. This comprised 18 Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), 33 Hoverflies, 18 other Diptera (true flies), 14 bees, 6 other hymenoptera and 11 other minor pollinators (e.g. true bugs and beetles). A further 38 incidental (non-pollinator) species were also recorded. These results and habitat assessments were used to provide management suggestions to enhance the value of these sites for pollinators. Where possible suggestions aimed to benefit key species recorded during site surveys, such as the Chalk hill blue butterfly (Polyommatus coridon), the Section 41 priority species Straw belle moth (Aspitates gilvaria) and the scarce (Nb) wasp Microdynerus exilis. Finally, recommendations for future survey and monitoring were provided, aiming to inform Kier of the progression of habitat improvements for pollinators and advise future management. Introduction There has been a growing interest in managing road verges and other transport features more sensitively for biodiversity. -

Prior to this, British dipterists have struggled because unless you have a copy of the Fauna Ent. Scand. volume for blowflies (Rognes, 1991), you will have been largely reliant on Van Emden's 1954 RES Handbook, which does not include all the British species (notably the common Pollenia pediculata), has very outdated nomenclature, and very outdated classification - with several calliphorids and tachinids placed within the Rhinophoridae and Eurychaeta palpalis placed in the Sarcophagidae. As well as updating keys, I have also taken the opportunity to produce new species accounts which summarise what I know of each species and act as an invitation and challenge to others to update, correct or clarify what I have written. As a result of my recent experience of producing an attractive and fairly user-friendly new guide to British bees, I have tried to replicate that approach here, incorporating lots of photos and clear, conveniently positioned diagrams. Presentation of identification literature can have a big impact on the popularity of an insect group and the accuracy of the records that result. Calliphorids and rhinophorids are fascinating flies, sometimes of considerable economic and medicinal value and deserve to be well recorded. What is more, many gaps still remain in our knowledge. -

Adult longevity considerably increased (9.60 days) when fed with honey solution but in Sh Aramideh non-feeding situation, it lasted for only 3.00 days. There were significant differences (P<0.1) observed in Department of Plant Protection, daily and total feeding rate among the first, second and third instar larvae. Each larva of E. corollae fed College of Agriculture, Urmia on 392.20 aphids during larval period and revealed a high potential for feeding on A. pomi. The third University, Iran instar larvae played an important role in feeding rate, such that 66.09% of total larval feeding was due to this instar. -

EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten en andere ongewervelden Stichting EIS is het kenniscentrum voor insecten en andere ongewervelden. De stichting doet onderzoek en geeft adviezen over beleid en beheer. Daar- naast houden we ons bezig met voorlichting en educatie. We hebben een brede kennis over de ecologie, verspreiding en bescherming van ongewer- velden. Het bureau werkt samen met ruim 1400 vrijwilligers verdeeld over meer dan 50 werkgroepen, elk gericht op een specifieke diergroep. Door dit netwerk van specialisten en vrijwilligers hebben we naast goede kennis over populaire groepen zoals libellen en sprinkhanen ook ruime expertise met be- trekking tot andere insecten en ongewervelden. EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten is daardoor in staat om projecten uit te voeren met betrekking tot een grote diversiteit aan diergroepen. John T. Corresponding author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: The family Syrphidae is divided into three subfamilies viz., Syrphinae, Milesiinae and Microdontinae. Majority of aphidophagous syrphids belong to the subfamily Syrphinae. Most species are terrestrial, while a few species are aquatic or live in very moist situation. Among the terrestrial forms at least 25 per cent are predacious, chiefly aphidophagous. There are more than 4700 species worldwide with 312 species under 71 genera known from the Indian subcontinent. Many studies have been conducted on the biology, intrinsic rate of increase, feeding behavior and factors affecting their oviposition and techniques for their multiplication. Relatively, less importance has been given to their field evaluation and to the studies dealing with reasons tracing causes for their less effectiveness in the open field. Recently, considerable efforts have been made to enhance their effectiveness by manipulating their habitat. Development of techniques for their effective shipment and release are necessary. Release rates, stage to be released, and stage which can be stored at low temperature need to be identified. KEY WORDS: Aphids, biology, biological control, syrphids. For these reasons, World over 4000 aphid species have been recorded, biological control is considered a cornerstone of many out of which 1020 are distributed in the Oriental region. -

Summaries of the number of species in families known to be in VC55 at that time were presented with the intention that fuller status assessments would be made in due course. The known records of flies to the end of 2020 are now being collated, checked, validated and plotted in order to produce a sequence of status reports as part of the Leicestershire Entomological Society Occasional Publication Series (LESOPS). Reviews of the Conopidae and Tephritidae have already appeared (Morris, 2021a, b) and are now followed by consideration of records from the fly families with a maximum of 10 species (Table 1). Radenkoviã University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Natural Sciences Department of Biology and Ecology, Trg Dositeja Obradoviãa 2, 21000 Novi Sad, Yugoslavia NEW DATA ON HOVERFLIES DIVERSITY (INSECTA: DIPTERA: SYRPHIDAE)ONTHE FRUŠKA GORA MOUNTAIN (SERBIA) ABSTRACT: The hoverflies fauna of the Fruška Gora Mountain is well known on account of long-term investigations conducted on the location (1956—2002). Previously, the list of hoverflies had included 203 species (Vujiã and Glumac, 1994). Based on new investigations, nomenclature changes and recently published data, the following results were obtained: three species have been recorded for the first time for southeastern Europe, one species for F.R. Yugoslavia and seven species for the Fruška Gora; seven previously publis- hed species have been replaced and seven excluded from the list of the hoverflies fauna of the Fruška Gora; 16 species with recently established junior synonyms and 12 species with new generic names have been noted. According to these results, the revised list of hoverfli- es of the Fruška Gora Mountain now consists of 210 species. The valleys of the Fruška Gora Mountain and their adjoining slopes harbor meadows and grain fields, vine- yards and orchards. Dense deciduous forests cover its higher parts, above 300 meters.
