Catholic Conference of Ohio April 28, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Yesterday, 27 April 2020, Governor Mike DeWine presented a strategy to begin a multi-phased plan, even while the executive “Stay at Home Order” remains in place. His plan begins a process for Ohioans gradually to return to work and daily activity and provides hope and evidence that our cooperation with the governor’s orders has significantly curbed the spread of the virus. We thank you for and admire the patience, cooperation and understanding you have already shown during this COVID-19 pandemic. We realize the frustration, sadness, and loss the faithful felt not to be able to gather personally to celebrate the Paschal Mysteries during the Sacred Triduum and each Sunday. During this time of sacrifice and longing, we have joined our prayers and hearts to yours, trusting that God will see us through this pandemic and reunite us at the Eucharistic Feast. Out of deep concern for the common good as well as the physical and spiritual well-being of all the people of Ohio, the Catholic Bishops of Ohio have agreed once again to cooperate with the governor, and to support and abide by the multi-phased approach to returning to work and eventual public gathering in large groups. To that end, the Catholic Bishops of Ohio extend the temporary suspension of all publicly celebrated Masses/liturgies ending on May 29, with the hope of publicly celebrating together the Solemnity of Pentecost on the weekend of May 30/31. Each of the bishops of Ohio, once again, dispense the Catholic faithful who reside in their respective dioceses and all other Catholics currently in their territories from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass during this time. We ask for the cooperation and adherence of all the faithful to the governor’s directives during this period. We will be working diligently with our pastoral teams to consider reasonable, gradual and responsible initiatives for welcoming back the faithful in time to Sunday Mass, initiatives which will renew our love for the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and which will help us to restore Catholic life and invite others to share that life after the pandemic. We encourage individual dioceses and their respective pastors and parishioners to begin to work to establish plans which respect social distancing and other requirements for the safety of our people. This decision has not been taken lightly and, as your bishops, together with you, we recognize the sacrifice we are called to make being physically distanced from the Holy Eucharist and from one another. We remain grateful for your understanding and prayerful support. As your bishops we continue to encourage you to keep holy the Lord’s Day by participating in Sunday Mass by way of radio broadcast or televised or livestreamed options and making a spiritual communion. Keeping in mind of the gift of plenary indulgences offered to us by the Church, we encourage all the faithful to turn to the Church’s treasury of prayer, praying as a family or individually the Liturgy of the Hours, rosary, divine mercy chaplet and Stations of the Cross, etc Together we continue to pray for all who are suffering from Covid19, for all health care workers and first responders, for all the deceased and their families, and for an easing of the anxiety and tension caused by this pandemic. Relying on the Motherly care of Our Lady, Health of the Sick, we unite our sufferings to those of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and we trust in the glorious hope of His Resurrection.

Prayer for vocations

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fourth Sunday of Easter Gospel Reflection

Who do we follow? This is the question that today’s gospel puts before us. Many of us would like to think that we follow no one, that we make our own decisions and choose our own paths. Yet, our experience tells us that we are often led—look at advertising—and often led astray. Look at how many brigands have incited human beings so that the worst of crimes and destruction have been justified. But the choice of Christ as our shepherd is the choice to bear witness to the victory of life, and love, and forgiveness over the forces of death, domination and vengeance. So where do we The special characteristic of good shepherds is stand in terms of calling ourselves disciples? brought out in the passage in the relationship of trust between them and the sheep. They are trusting and in turn they inspire trust in those whom they lead. This wonderful quality — so rare in our experience — is expressed in a series of images, each of which can touch us deeply. The shepherds “enter the sheepfold through the gate,” they are not devious; they “call the sheep by name” — no haranguing; they “go ahead of the sheep” — no looking back to see if they are According to the liturgical tradition, the gospel being followed. The sheep “know the voice” of reading for this Sunday speaks about Jesus as the shepherd; their rationship is almost shepherd. instinctive, of the heart. Shepherd is one of the biblical titles for a leader, The image of the gate is not as well known as a memory of the days when the Jews were sheep that of the shepherd and is more difficult to enter rearing nomads. The passage therefore invites us into, but if we make the effort it can be very to celebrate people who have “shepherded” us by touching. Leaders who are like a gate are the touching our lives, some through direct contact, opposite of possessive; they are content to be the others from reading about them or hearing their humble instruments through which others can stories. “go freely in and out,” making their own way to We remember, too, great world leaders, in “life to the full.” A wonderful picture indeed of modern times or in the past, and recognise that great parents, teachers, community leaders and they were the presence of Jesus in the world, friends. —Catholicireland.net “shepherding” the human family. In happy to be a passageway verses 7 to 10 Jesus speaks of himself as “the through which many will pass freely and live gate.” life to the full. Amen. He revealed this prayer to St. Faustina and summarizes the entire Christian life.

hen difficulties arise in our lives, it can W be a struggle to maintain hope. The future may look bleak, or even uncertain, and we don’t know what to do. St. Faustina, our Divine Mercy Saint, re- ceived many private revelations from Jesus and one of the primary messages he relayed to her was trust.

He said to her, “The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is ~ trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive.” This theme of trust was repeated again and again in these private revelations, “I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other souls.”

In fact, the prayer Jesus gave to St. Faustina was one of the simplest, but often the most difficult to pray in times of difficulty.

This prayer is one that should center us during any trial and calm our fears down instantly. It requires a humble heart, willing to give up control of a situation and trust that God is in control.

Jesus taught his disciples a similar spiritual principle. Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? … seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things

will be given you besides. (Matthew 6:26-27, 33) By revealing to St. Faustina that simple prayer of “I trust in you,” Jesus reminds us that the essential spirituality of a Christian is that of trust in God, trusting in his mercy and love to provide for us and care for us in our need. Whenever you feel doubtful or anxious about what is happening in your life, say over and over again the prayer Jesus taught St. Faustina, “Jesus, I trust in You!” Little by little God will inch his way into your heart so that those words are not empty, but reflect an honest trust that God is in control. Trust is a gift of God. And like every gift of God, it is offered to everyone, unconditionally and without limit. But we must still desire it and ask for it in order to receive it. When, through pride, we seek to make our way through by ourselves, we make trust impossible. But it’s no better when, through modesty (“I’m no saint!”), we tell ourselves: “Trust is too much for me.” Yes, it’s too much, but what if God wishes to offer it to us? A little child who’s offered a wonderful present doesn’t refuse it because she doesn’t deserve it. She grabs it with both arms in delight! That is how Jesus asks us to receive the gifts of his Father; that is how He calls us to enter into trust.

Padre Clemente Uchendu C.S.Sp., PhD
