Meet the Nielsens Article 2 7 MEET THE NIELSENS The Nielsen ratings determine which shows you see and don’t see on TV. The trouble is, the numbers are shaky. By Elizabeth Jensen ITSANEVER-ENDING TASKBEING A NIELSEN FAMILY. WANT TO WATCH TV? First you turn the set on, then you punch a button telling Nielsen Research that it’s you, a 27-year-old college- educated male making $59,000 a year, sitting there in front of the tube. Then you can choose your channel. Walk into the room where your 2%year-old wife is already engrossed in Friends? Push the button to tell Nielsen you’re there. Run to the bathroom during the commercial? Yep, that button should be pushed again, as it should be yet again when you return. And if you have a baby, once she hits two, she too will have to learn to push her own special Nielsen button. The whole family will do this for two years, all for a token reward. Televisor& power lies in its ability to reach tens of mil- lions of viewers at a time. But whether the second night of 60 Minutes or the fledgling Animal Planet cable channel sur- vives depends on just a handful of people-not television executives, but the anonymous button-pushing families whose viewing gets translated into the ubiquitous Nielsen ratings. He joined the CBS Radio network as a page, rose to assistant producer in two years, ultimately commanded such network properties as Sus- pense, Escape, and Philip Marlowe. Writer John Meston’s checkered career began in Colorado some forty-three years ago and grass- hopped through Dartmouth (‘35) to the Left Bank in Paris, school- teaching in Cuba, range-riding in Colorado, and ultimately, the job as Network Editor for CBS Radio in Hollywood. It was here that Meston and Macdonnell met.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth. Nielsen Media Research, Inc., is the successor to the television audience measurement business of A.C. Nielsen Company in the United States and Canada. Nielsen Media Research (“Nielsen”) fully supports the Advanced Television Systems Committee (“ATSC”) request1 to make PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) mandatory as defined by ATSC standard A/65. In particular, TSID (Transport Stream Identifier), Call Letters (using Short Name field), Major Channel and Minor Channel fields are especially important to proper receiver operation, easing consumer usage and avoiding misidentification in audience measurement surveys. Further, Nielsen reiterates the need for program identification features as previously detailed Nielsen’s response to proceeding 87-268 (attached). Nielsen has worked closely with industry standards groups, receiver manufacturers and broadcasters to propose program identification methods for digital television. However, it has become clear that implementation must be mandatory to ensure consistent and complete identification of all digital television content.     American Idol: Evidence on Same-Race Preferences October 16, 2008 Abstract This paper examines whether viewers of the popular television show, American Idol, ex- hibit racial preferences. We ¯nd evidence on same-race preferences among black viewers only; when there are more black contestants in the show, more black viewers are tuned in to watch it. The ¯nding is robust after we account for the endogeneity problem re- garding the contestants' racial composition, which arises due to the voting mechanism. Our point estimate tells that a 10 percentage point increase in the proportion of black contestants increases viewership ratings for black households by 1.3 percentage points. The results are robust after we control for the \color" of songs. In an early study, Hraba and Grant (1970) found, replicating the well-known doll experiment of Clark and Clark (1947), that children prefer a doll of their own color. Same-race preferences are also found in inter- personal relationships, such as high-school friendship (Hallinan and Williams, 1989), dating (Fisman, Iyengar, Kamenica and Simonson, 2008), and marriage (Wong, 2004). Holzer and Ihlanfeldt (1998) found that the racial composition of customers a®ects the race of new hires since business owners accommodate consumers' racial preferences, which is consistent with Becker's (1971) prediction that consumer preferences may give rise to racial discrimination. Some researchers believe that the mass communication capability of television has increased cultural homogeneity in all but a very few places. This paper contends that the American, National, and Columbia Broadcasting networks (ABC, NBC, and CBS) present enough variation in programming to permit television to be a variable, not homogeneous, mass medium. Differences also occur in the number of television channel choices available in individual homes. None of these three networks provides complete national programming delivery, and some geographic areas receive programming from only one or two of the three netu_rks. A difference exists in the broadcast range between Ultra High Frequency (UHF) and Very High Frequency (VHF) stations, and local stations may consciously delete selected programs. Program content analysis and audience surveys are needed to determine if variations in communication patterns produce a diversity in U.S. popular culture.
