    Medjugorje (Part 5 of 5): Spiritual Guides Disobedient, Excommunicated, Unchaste (New Era World News) THE FRANCISCAN SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS of the Medjugorje “Seers” have scored a “trifecta”; all three of them have been laicized, excommunicated, or suspended a divinis. Father Tomislav Vlasic was the third spiritual adviser of the Medjugorje “seers” to be suspended from his ministry (2009). The second was, Father Jozo Zovko, who was suspended by Bishop Peric in 2004. Father Iveca Vego holds the infamous dishonor of being the first; he was suspended on Jan. 29 1982, six months after the apparitions began at Medjugorje. Nonetheless, he continued to exercise his priestly ministry in defiance of the Bishop of Mostar. Vego refused to comply until after the Vatican got involved and the other two were implicated on various charges serious enough to warrant suspension and excommunication before the Curia took up Vego’s case in 2009. l Father Iveca Vego According to Bishop Zanic, Father Ivica Vego, a Franciscan priest among the first confidants and spiritual directors of the "seers", was dispensed from his vows and expelled from the Franciscan Order in January (1982) by his superiors in the Order of Friars Minor (OFM) after which the bishop appealed to the Vatican Congregation for Religious to have him reduced to the lay state. According to Bishop Zanic, eventually Ivica Vego’s behavior, which included persistent and flagrant disobedience and immoral sexual conduct (the seduction and impregnation of a nun named Sister Leopolda) caught up with him. "By an order of the Holy Father the Pope, he was thrown out of his Franciscan religious order OFM by his General, dispensed from his vows, and suspended "a divinis".

Hess ii ABSTRACT Dr. Beth Greich-Polelle, Advisor This thesis examines the impacts of the alleged appearances of the Virgin Mary which began in Medjugorje, Yugoslavia in 1981. Through the examination of primary sources such as Catholic Church and the United States Department of State documentation and eye-witness interviews, this study creates a basic history of the events in Medjugorje and clearly defines the Catholic Church’s position on these events. This thesis provides an academic history of the events surrounding Medjugorje and provides historical insight into the motivations behind the response of the local villagers and clergy members, the Yugoslavian state and the Vatican. The events studied include a carefully-documented history of the first two months of the apparitions, an account of the officially-atheistic, Yugoslavian government’s response to the subsequent religious outpouring, and a history of the Catholic Church’s response to the alleged apparitions up to the present day. The dispute of the authenticity of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje - which is currently under investigation by the Catholic Church - is polarizing within Catholic culture. The historiography of these events is divided into two groups of “pro-authenticity” or “anti-authenticity” authors who publish opposing and even contradictory information while using the same sources.

José Antúnez de Mayolo, a Salesian Bishop from the Archdiocese of Ayacucho in Peru, came for a private visit to Medjugorje. “This is a beautiful shrine where I find much faith, where I find faithful who live their faith, faithful who come for confession. I was hearing the confessions of Spanish pilgrims. I participated in Eucharistic celebrations and I liked everything very, very much. It is really very beautiful here. It is right that Medjugorje is called a place of prayer for the whole world and ‘the confessional of the world’. I have been to Lourdes, but it is a very different reality. They cannot be compared. They are two different realities. In Lourdes, the event is closed, but here everything is still developing. Here, faith can be felt in a much stronger way than in Lourdes. Medjugorje is still quite unknown in Peru, but I promise to become an apostle of Medjugorje in my country. The faith is strong and alive here, and this is what attracts so many pilgrims from the whole world. I should like to tell them to have a strong love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Let them love her mightily, because she is our Mother and she is always with us. This is why those who live and work here have to love her, but also priests who come from abroad. Pilgrims who come here have already started their spiritual journey towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, and they already have faith.

Pray, that God may act In April's message the Blessed Virgin invited us to reap the fruit of Easter, which is our life united to God our Creator. In fact, Jesus' sacrifice re-established the original communion with God, our Father, thus giving meaning to our life: we live to please Him, while awaiting to possess Him for all eternity. If we, on the other hand, volontarily sin and remain in our sin, life is broken and becomes death. This is why Mary seriously warns us: Children, I invite you to abandon sin and accept prayer at all times. Prayer is the opposite of a life of sin, because it permits us to live an on-going relationship with God, Who is the fount of every good. Prayer is a question of life or death. Mary echoes Jesus' words: you must pray always without tiring. It is not by chance then that for nearly 16 years Our Lady, with the delicacy of a Mother, continues to repeat "pray." Life without prayer can only fail, because not we, but God, saves: My Father is working still and I too am working (Jn 5:17), but this can happen only when through prayer we open ourselves up to His inspirations, or rather, to His commands, so His plan may be fulfilled. Mary turns over our pastoral of programmes and feverish activity which come from the lack of inner experience and make us compete with the world, to establish the primacy of personal prayer, of prayer in the family, of prayer in the groups, where the Holy Spirit creates communion.

    A Fatima in a Communist Land? CHRISTOPHER CVIIC The past fifty years have seen a veritable explosion of visions, revelations and other allegedly miraculous events whose authenticity has been or is still being investigated by the Roman Catholic Church. Over a hundred have been officially notified to the church authorities: about sixty or so in Italy, eleven in France, seven in Spain and so on, but none as far as is known in countries that find themselves under communist rule. This is perhaps why reports in the summer of 1981 that the Virgin Mary had appeared in a mountainous region of central Yugoslavia received so much publicity and caused so much genuine popular interest both in Yugoslavia itself and abroad. The fact that the alleged apparitions led to a bitter clash between Yugoslavia's communist regime and the Roman Catholic Church added to the interest in the whole affair. It all started in a small village called Bijakovici about twenty kilometres from MoStfU, the capital of the province of Hercegovina which is part of the republic of Bosnia and Hercegovina, one of the six republics of the Yugoslav federation. The village, in the Catholic parish of Medjugorje and the municipality of Citluk, is inhabited by Catholic Croats. In Bosnia and Hhcegovina Croats number, according to the latest census of March 1981,758,000 and are the third largest group after the Muslims counted as an ethnic group (1.6 million) and the Serbs (1.3 million). In Bosnia, as elsewhere in the Balkans, religion tends to overlap with nationality and so Croats are Catholics and Serbs Orthodox.
