ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD OF ANNUNCIATION HOMILY HELPS These homily notes are provided to help priests and deacons make connections to respect for human life on the Solemnity of the Annunciation (March 25). Parts of these reflections on the Annunciation can also be included in the homily the weekend prior to inform the parish community about this upcoming feast day. Brief notes are provided to introduce the congregation to the Blessing of a Child in the Womb. Other ministry leaders can also use these reflections to highlight Respect Life connections elsewhere, such as in a Bible study, in a small group or a faith formation setting, or as part of another ministry gathering. These words of Jesus were not meant for John alone, but for every one of his followers. The young apostle was the only disciple to be with Jesus until the end. He represents each one of us who could not be there in person. Love for Mary has always been a sign of true Christianity. All of the saints have loved her more than anyone, except for God, of course. Why? Because she was so greatly loved by God, who chose her to be the Mother of his Son. Saint Gregory the Great, a Pope of the sixth century, revealed the early Church's devotion to Mary in these words: "If anyone does not love the Holy Mother of God, he is far from God." Mary's Role in Our Salvation Mary's birth was an event of great joy for the world because it meant that the Savior was soon to arrive! Every year, on September 8, the Church celebrates her birthday with this prayer: Your birth, O Virgin Mother of God, proclaims joy to the world, for from you arose the glorious Sun of Justice, Christ Our Lord. -

Medjugorje (Part 5 of 5): Spiritual Guides Disobedient, Excommunicated, Unchaste (New Era World News) THE FRANCISCAN SPIRITUAL DIRECTORS of the Medjugorje “Seers” have scored a “trifecta”; all three of them have been laicized, excommunicated, or suspended a divinis. Father Tomislav Vlasic was the third spiritual adviser of the Medjugorje “seers” to be suspended from his ministry (2009). The second was, Father Jozo Zovko, who was suspended by Bishop Peric in 2004. Father Iveca Vego holds the infamous dishonor of being the first; he was suspended on Jan. 29 1982, six months after the apparitions began at Medjugorje. Nonetheless, he continued to exercise his priestly ministry in defiance of the Bishop of Mostar. Vego refused to comply until after the Vatican got involved and the other two were implicated on various charges serious enough to warrant suspension and excommunication before the Curia took up Vego’s case in 2009. l Father Iveca Vego According to Bishop Zanic, Father Ivica Vego, a Franciscan priest among the first confidants and spiritual directors of the "seers", was dispensed from his vows and expelled from the Franciscan Order in January (1982) by his superiors in the Order of Friars Minor (OFM) after which the bishop appealed to the Vatican Congregation for Religious to have him reduced to the lay state. According to Bishop Zanic, eventually Ivica Vego’s behavior, which included persistent and flagrant disobedience and immoral sexual conduct (the seduction and impregnation of a nun named Sister Leopolda) caught up with him. "By an order of the Holy Father the Pope, he was thrown out of his Franciscan religious order OFM by his General, dispensed from his vows, and suspended "a divinis". -

MEDJUGORJE'S EFFECT'S: A HISTORY OF LOCAL, STATE AND CHURCH RESPONSE TO THE MEDJUGORJE PHENOMENON Teresa M. Hess ii ABSTRACT Dr. Beth Greich-Polelle, Advisor This thesis examines the impacts of the alleged appearances of the Virgin Mary which began in Medjugorje, Yugoslavia in 1981. Through the examination of primary sources such as Catholic Church and the United States Department of State documentation and eye-witness interviews, this study creates a basic history of the events in Medjugorje and clearly defines the Catholic Church’s position on these events. This thesis provides an academic history of the events surrounding Medjugorje and provides historical insight into the motivations behind the response of the local villagers and clergy members, the Yugoslavian state and the Vatican. The events studied include a carefully-documented history of the first two months of the apparitions, an account of the officially-atheistic, Yugoslavian government’s response to the subsequent religious outpouring, and a history of the Catholic Church’s response to the alleged apparitions up to the present day. The dispute of the authenticity of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje - which is currently under investigation by the Catholic Church - is polarizing within Catholic culture. The historiography of these events is divided into two groups of “pro-authenticity” or “anti-authenticity” authors who publish opposing and even contradictory information while using the same sources. -

Shea: Pope Paul VI and the "Mother of the Church" POPE PAUL VI AND THE "MOTHER OF THE CHURCH" Presidential Address by THE RT. REv. MSGR. GEoRGE W. SHEA, S.T.D. Among all the events of the past year, certainly the one of most abiding importance for Catholics was the promulgation by Pope Paul VI, on Nov. 21, 1964, of the Second Vatican Council's masterwork, the dogmatic constitution "On the Church." Specialists in the field of Mariology are particularly grate ful for the constitution's eighth and last chapter, "On the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, in the Mystery of Christ and of the Church." But they are hardly less grateful for the Holy Father's personal completion, as it were, of the doctrine of that chapter, when, in his discourse concluding the third session of the Council, he made explicit something which the chapter says only implicitly, namely, that Mary is "the Mother of the Church." On this subject Pope Paul said, in part: "By he promulgation of today's constitution, which has as its crown and summit a whole chapter dedicated to Our Lady, we can rightly affirm that the present session ends as an incomparable hymn of praise in honor of Mary. -

The account is given with a reserve, a purity of expression, and a lyrical form that undoubtedly arose and took shape in the liturgical life of the early Church. Six hundred years after St. Luke composed his Gospel,Germanus, patriarch of Constantinople and devoted supporter of the cult of Mary in that place, acclaimed her thus in a sermon on the Dormition of the Virgin: Indeed, you are the Mother of true life, the leaven of Adam's recreation, Eve's freedom from reproach. -

Gontis Chief reasons that it is important to know the truth about Mary are that: - Knowing the truth about the Blessed Mother helps us to know the truth about her Son, Jesus, the Redeemer of mankind. - Mary always leads us to Jesus. - To help people, be they your children, other family members, students in your classes or programs, other Catholics, non-Catholics, etc. deepen in the truth and can help them along on the path to salvation. I. What are the four Marian dogmas? A. Mother of God B. Immaculate Conception C. Perpetual Virginity D. Assumption II. Mother of God A. Jesus is God, Mary is Jesus’ mother, thus Mary is the Mother of God. B. This dogma was first defined at the Council of Ephesus in A.D. 431. This is an example of the Church protecting the whole truth about Christ, which had been denied by Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople. C. Patriarch/Bishop Nestorius claimed that Mary only gave birth to the human Jesus, but not the divine Jesus and therefore should not be called the Mother of God. This essentially makes Jesus into two persons rather than one person. You can see how distorting the truth about Mary, even more importantly distorts the truth about Jesus. D. Mary gave birth to the person of Jesus. Jesus is a divine person with two natures – divine and human. What is the difference between person and nature? E.
