HD: Could we begin by discussing how you got into theatre in the first place? DP: Sure. I was a University actor and director and at the latter end of my university career at the University of East Anglia I did a bit of work in the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich - which is a semi-professional theatre, or it was then, I don’t know if it still is – a professional director and stage manager. Basically they took me on and helped me out and gave me some introductions and I used those contacts to do the usual thing – writing to people saying ‘please will you take me on’ and eventually I got one. HD: And when did you first get involved in the Theatre Workshop? DP: Theatre Workshop was 1971 - I started ’72 sorry: I worked with the lighting designer at the Theatre Royal in 1971, and he alerted me to the fact that there was a job going in early 1972. HD: OK, and how long did you work in that establishment and in the King’s Head Theatre. DP: It was actually quite a brief time working at Stratford East, Theatre Workshop, it was pretty much eight or nine months in 1972 and I was working at the King’s Head during the same time. -

J’ai tout de suite su que je voulais transposer ces livres en films. J’étais absolument abasourdi par l’imagination, l’audace et l’intelligence de ces livres. La plume de Pullman va de la vie de tous les jours au métaphysique, et son impressionnante trilogie est un testament au nom de la liberté et du potentiel de l’âme humaine. Les Royaumes du Nord, le premier livre de la trilogie, offre tous ce qu’un réalisateur peut espérer – une histoire captivante, des personnages fascinants, une profondeur psychologique et philosophique, et une très respectable merveille en son cœur. Pour moi, il n’y avait pas de meilleur challenge que de m’y consacrer dans les années à venir. New York, NY – September 12, 2018 – In March 2019, Park Avenue Armory – in collaboration with the National Theatre and Neal Street Productions – will present the North American premiere of The Lehman Trilogy. Told in three parts in a single evening, the production will unfold in the 1 soaring 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall from March 22 through April 20, 2019 in a strictly limited engagement. Directed by Sam Mendes, The Lehman Trilogy weaves through nearly two centuries of Lehman lineage, following the brothers Henry, Emanuel, and Mayer Lehman from their 1844 arrival in New York City to the 2008 collapse of the financial firm bearing their name. Adam Godley, Ben Miles, and Simon Russell Beale play the Lehman brothers, and a cast of characters including their sons and grandsons. As the inaugural production of the 2019 season, The Lehman Trilogy builds on the Armory’s history of presenting bold and engaging theater productions that explore the unexpected possibilities of the cross-genre cultural institution. The world premiere of Stefano Massini’s The Lehman Trilogy opened at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 2015. -

THE CENTER PRESENTS WINTER 2019-20 THE CENTER For ten years, National Theatre Live has brought the best of British theatre to cinema screens around the world. Using state-of- the-art filming techniques, tailored to every play, NTLive brings each performance as it happens, in all its glory. From close-ups that capture every flicker of emotion, to sweeping wide shots of the stage. National Theatre Live broadcast its first theatre production from the National Theatre in London on the 25th of June 2009. The production was Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren. Since the first broadcast in 2009, National Theatre Live has broadcast from 21 stages across the UK and released over 80 titles. Almost 9,000,000 people have watched a National Theatre Live broadcast or screening around the world. Broadcasts have been seen in more than 3,500 different cinemas around the world, in more than 130,000 difference screenings. Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theater, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view of each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time. Satellites allow the productions to be broadcast live to cinemas throughout the UK, as well as many European venues. Other venues view the broadcasts ‘as live’ according to their time zone, or at a later date.
