Versuch einer Konstitution des periodischen Systems Classer, c´est formuler des analogies C. F. Gerhardt1 „Was ist ein Periodensystem?“ Diese Frage erscheint im ersten Moment trivial. Für den Chemiker stellt sie sich nicht. Chemiker sind Anwender und leben gegenwarts- bezogen. Seit es Periodensysteme gibt, ist klar, was ein Periodensystem ist. In der Chemie gab es stets nur einige wenige gebräuchliche Darstellungen des Perioden- systems, und der Chemiker kann auf die Frage “Was ist ein Periodensystem?“ auf eine dieser Darstellungen verweisen. Ihre praktische Anwendung, das eigentliche Ziel seiner Tätigkeit, lernt er seit einiger Zeit gestützt auf einige physikalische Erklä- rungen im Labor. Gab es in der Frühzeit des Periodensystems zwischen den Systemen unter- schiedlicher Autoren noch einzelne, recht bedeutsame Unterschiede in der Zuord- nung einzelner Elemente zu Gruppen oder in der Stellung von Gruppen im System, so weisen die späteren Systeme in der Abfolge der Elemente keinerlei Variation auf und die Unterschiede in der Wahl einer Anfangsgruppe, der graphischen Repräsen- tation von Haupt- und Nebengruppen, oder die äußere Gestalt als Tabelle, Pyramide oder Spirale erscheinen eher als stilistische Fragen. Zusätzlich wirkt sich der deut- sche Sprachgebrauch hemmend aus, der nicht zwischen periodischem Gesetz und periodischer Tafel unterscheidet,: Er verschleiert hinter der Bezeichnung „Perioden- system“ den Unterschied der über 700 graphischen Darstellungen,2 die jeweils be- stimmte Aspekte in den Vordergrund stellen und der zusammenhängenden Ele- mentfolge mit ihrer Einteilung. Ferner verdeckt eine realistische Sichtweise als Setz- kasten der chemischen Elemente den wesentlich relationalen Charakter des Peri- odensystems. Der Philosoph und Historiker kann sich nicht auf das gerade gebräuchliche Peri- odensystem beschränken. Er sollte vielmehr die auffindbaren Systeme archivieren, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede dieser Konzepte herausstellen, mit dem Ziel, 1 C. F. Diese Einteilung ist die Grundlage für das Schreiben der Geschichte. Hier soll die- ser Forderung genüge getan werden, indem das hinter der Tafel stehende Gebäude aus Theorien und Annahmen, Phänomenen und Daten nach relationalen Bestand- teilen gegliedert und in seiner Entwicklung, d. h. in seiner historischen Perspektive, berücksichtigt wird. Dieses Gebäude, repräsentiert durch die periodische Tafel als einer Art grober Planskizze, ist unaufhörlichem Wandel und Wachstum unterworfen, wobei sich nur ein kleiner Teil des Wandels in den Plänen niederschlägt; der bei weitem größere und schwerwiegendere Teil bleibt verborgen. Die Anordnung der Relationen, die in den Aufbau des Periodensystems eingehen, soll als Konstitutions- schema bezeichnet werden. Dabei wird unterschieden, zwischen relationalen Kon- strukten, die als Objekte aufgefaßt werden wie chemischen Elementen und Relatio- nen zwischen den Elementen wie z. B. Atomgewichte oder chemische Ähnlichkeit sowie Relationen zwischen Elementgruppen,

    A Look Back at Ernest Solvay On the 150th Anniversary of the Solvay Company On 20 September 1913, Ernest Solvay gathered family and relatives, col- leagues and employees, as well as scientists and academics, in his Brussels headquarters to celebrate a double jubilee. Officially, it was to commemo- rate the 50th anniversary of the founding of “Société Solvay & Cie,” but the celebration had a private tone as well, since in 1863 he had also married Adèle Winderickx. In Ernest’s eyes, however, this was more of a huge family gathering, including both “ma famille naturelle” and “ma grande famille industrielle” as he described them in his address launching the ceremony. Indeed, from the very beginning, Ernest and his brother Alfred Solvay insisted on running the business as a family firm. Even when the Société Solvay became an international operation, the company maintained close relationships with the plants dispersed all over the world. Either the firm or the fam- ily—which had become immensely rich and was active in philanthropy—invested heavily in local education and social welfare. The presence at the double jubilee of eminent scien- tists and representatives of renowned learned societies from many different countries, can only be explained by an important aspect of Ernest Solvay: his deep attraction to science. Having already secured wealth for his family, he had started to use his fortune to revo- lutionize science. He did this through his own scientific work, outside the frame of academic institutions, and by providing extensive support to the work and enterprises of others, much better rooted and reputed in the scientific commu- nity.
