SLR cameras are tested using the same test protocols and methods used for testing all cameras. Black and white resolution test charts are used to test the resolution of the cameras. A separate test chart is used to measure the colour reproduction and white balance. Photos are taken at the highest resolution and quality settings and evaluation is done via software. Tests are also performed for a portrait in a living room with and without flash. An outside landscape photo is taken, with trees, lawn, buildings and sky in bright sunlight. A macro or close up photo of a flower is taken in mixed light conditions. The focus quality of the auto-focus system is evaluated by way of the photo used for testing colour reproduction. The effects of image stabilisation is tested by using practical recordings and an electro-dynamic shaker is used to produce photos with the same image detail. Movie quality is also tested, on a TV screen and on a PC monitor. Movies are taken slowly panning across outdoor and indoor scenery, as well as a movie of a fan with a high revolution speed to check how continuous the recordings of the single frame takes place.

Shopping for September While Ireland’s children are enjoying the school holidays, their parents’ thoughts may be turning to the cost of the new school year. Between uniforms, sports gear, schoolbooks, and stationery, not to mention ‘voluntary’ contributions, even public education is an expensive business. One way to save some hard-earned cash while preparing for the new school year is to sell the school books your child has finished with and buy as many second-hand books as possible. While some schools facilitate the buying and selling of used books, others don’t, making a service like www.schoolbookexchange.ie invaluable for resourceful parents. The site is easy to search, and the condition of each book is described – a crucial part of second-hand buying. Up to one million used school books are not re-used in Ireland every year, representing a huge environmental as well as financial waste. Isn’t it time to start re-using and recycling? A WEEE bit better...

Apparently we’re doing quite well when it comes to recycling our electrical and electronic equipment. According to new figures published by the Department of the Environment, WEEE recycling was up 20% in 2007, with a total recovery of 6.7 million items, or 37,812 tonnes of household WEEE. That’s 8.7kg per person, double the EU target. The progress made in WEEE recycling is being marked by the removal of EMCs (environmental management costs) from smaller electrical items, including the 50c charge on CFL bulbs. From now on, EMCs will only apply to large electrical goods such as washing machines and dishwashers, and appliances such as fridges, televisions, fluorescent tubes and gas discharge lamps, which are particularly expensive to recycle. This is a welcome change: the CAI has long spoken out against EMCs, especially when applied to environmentally friendly alternatives such as CFL bulbs. However, although the charges are being removed, these smaller items are still Currents by categorised as WEEE. Note that they should still be recycled properly Margaret Brady cc at local authority depots, and must not be put in the household bin.
