Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’. -

The Outsider's Edge: Geography, Gender, and Sexuality in the Local
Sociological Forum, Vol. 35, No. 3, September 2020 DOI: 10.1111/socf.12622 © 2020 Eastern Sociological Society The Outsider’s Edge: Geography, Gender, and Sexuality in the Local Color Movement1 Wendy Griswold,2 Anna Michelson3 Outsider status, especially multiple social marginalities, usually constitutes a burden. Certain combinations can be advantageous for cultural producers, however, especially when geographic marginality is part of the mix. The Local Color movement demonstrates the outsider’s edge. In mid-nineteenth century in America, print technology, reduced postal rates, and mass literacy led to the golden age of magazines. Their readers sought stories about the regional cultures that were disappearing in an industrializing nation. Local Color— fiction about places outside the northeast cultural heartland—met this demand. Local Color authors shared outsider identities—geography, gender, and sexuality—that characterized and shaped the movement. Com- parison with authors in the adjacent genres of Bestselling, Sentimental, and The Atlantic Monthly fiction reveals that multiple outsiderness (1) was not typical for authors of the period, and (2) advantaged women from the geographic periphery, especially those with unconventional sexual careers. INTRODUCTION: MULTIPLE MARGINALITIES, INTERSECTIONALITY, AND OUTSIDERNESS Since sociology focuses on power and the unequal distribution of resources and influence, sociologists tend to envision social relations as involving some social or institutional boundary separating one set of people from another: insiders vs. out- siders, center vs. periphery, elite vs. non-elite, dominant vs. subordinate, normative vs. deviant, majority vs. minority, conventional vs. unconventional. Although we recognize that some people move between the sets—the boundary spanners, the socially mobile, the trans—the line between the two remains clear. -

Himes, B.A., East Texas Baptist University; M.A., Baylor University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Mary Ann O’Farrell Comfort—with its various connotations of physical ease, wealth, independence, and service—is an important concept to Jane Austen, who uses comfort in her novels to both affirm and challenge accepted women’s roles and status in her culture. In the late eighteenth century, new ideas of physical comfort emerged out of luxury along with a growing middle class, to become something both English people and foreigners identified with English culture. The perceived ability of the English to comfort well gave them a reason for national pride during a time of great anxieties about France’s cultural and military might, and Austen participates in her culture’s struggle to define itself against France. -

THE LETTERS OF SARAH ORNE JEWETT By JOHN ELDRIDGE FROST THE ever-growing volume of Miss Jewett's letters in print has made desirable a survey both of those which have been printed and of those in manuscript form in libraries. It is neither possible nor desirable to list those owned by individuals for this would constitute an invasion of the collector's privacy or, worse still, a breach of manners toward Miss Jewett's friends and their heirs. It is interesting to note that plans have already been nlade for the eventual disposal to libraries of all letters privately owned that I have viewed. Miss Jewett was a warm, vivid, stinlulating person whose genius often flowed into her correspondence. An astonishingly large amount of it was saved by those who knew her. She was an avid correspondent who frequently devoted an entire morn ing to the writing of letters. -

Woodbury and Marcia Oakes Woodbury. Among the fifty-five visual ad- ditions to Jewett’s novel of coastal Maine, an image captioned “Bedtime” adorns one story (Fig. 1). Nocturnal and shadowy, the image incorporates curved bannisters and arched windows and depicts Deephaven’s heroines, Helen Denis and Kate Lan- caster, climbing stairs toward upper-story chambers, exchang- ing conspiratorial glances across a solemn clock face. Merely putting a story about fisherman’s yarns to bed, as it were, and leaving something gleaming in the ladies’ eyes, the picture portends something other than slumber. W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Unattributed quotations with dates are from Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, as presented in Who’s Who of British Members of Parliament. -
