Jeffrey Department of Applied Mathematics, The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada [email protected] Abstract Tschirnhaus gave transformations for the elimination of some of the intermediate terms in a polynomial. His transformations were developed further by Bring and Jerrard, and here we describe all these transformations in modern notation. We also discuss their possible utility for polynomial solving, particularly with respect to the Mathematica poster on the solution of the quintic. 1 Introduction A recent issue of the BULLETIN contained a translation of the 1683 paper by Tschirnhaus [10], in which he proposed a method for solving a polynomial equation Pn(x) of degree n by transforming it into a polynomial Qn(y) which has a simpler form (meaning that it has fewer terms). Specifically, he extended the idea (which he attributed to Decartes) in which a polynomial of degree n is reduced or depressed (lovely word!) by removing its term in degree n ¡ 1. Tschirnhaus’s transformation is a polynomial substitution y = Tk(x), in which the degree of the transformation k < n can be selected. Tschirnhaus demonstrated the utility of his transformation by apparently solving the cubic equation in a way different from Cardano. Although Tschirnhaus’s work is described in modern books [9], later works by Bring [2, 3] and Jerrard [7, 6] have been largely forgotten. Here, we present the transformations in modern notation and make some comments on their utility. -

Outside the Box — The Changing Shape of the Computing World Steve Cunningham Computer Science California State University Stanislaus Turlock, CA 95382 [email protected] http://www.cs.csustan.edu/~rsc Something happened to computing while many of us were busy practicing or teaching our craft, and computing is not quite the same thing we learned. We can ignore this change and others will take our place and teach about it, but they will not have the context and the skill to understand the technology behind it and to carry it forward to the success it should have. And if others carry that torch, computer science will be stunted because we didn't recognize and respond to the opportunity. What happened? Simply this—that Xerox and Apple and, yes, Microsoft opened up the box labeled “CAUTION: Computer Inside” and let the user into the computing picture. Users responded hesitantly but increasingly eagerly and now expect the computer to work for them instead of their working for the computer. Every application now in wide use, and any system that supports a general market, has evolved to meet that expectation. Any computing education that does not pay attention to the user’s role in computing is missing the most vibrant and exciting part of computing today. As it says at the top of this page, you are reading an editorial, not an academic paper. As an editorial, this note represents my personal passion and commitment to the user communication part of computing that the “official” computing establishment has long discounted, and I appreciate John Impagliazzo’s offer of this forum to make my case that computer science is missing the boat in not understanding the need to reshape computer science education to fill this void. -

Article The Question of Algorithmic Personhood and Being (Or: On the Tenuous Nature of Human Status and Humanity Tests in Virtual Spaces—Why All Souls Are ‘Necessarily’ Equal When Considered as Energy) Tyler Lance Jaynes Alden March Bioethics Institute, Albany Medical College, Albany, NY 12208, USA; [email protected] Abstract: What separates the unique nature of human consciousness and that of an entity that can only perceive the world via strict logic-based structures? Rather than assume that there is some potential way in which logic-only existence is non-feasible, our species would be better served by assuming that such sentient existence is feasible. Under this assumption, artificial intelligence systems (AIS), which are creations that run solely upon logic to process data, even with self-learning architectures, should therefore not face the opposition they have to gaining some legal duties and protections insofar as they are sophisticated enough to display consciousness akin to humans. Should our species enable AIS to gain a digital body to inhabit (if we have not already done so), it is more pressing than ever that solid arguments be made as to how humanity can accept AIS as being cognizant of the same degree as we ourselves claim to be. By accepting the notion that AIS can and will be able to fool our senses into believing in their claim to possessing a will or ego, we may yet Citation: Jaynes, T.L. Robert Grossman Curriculum Vita Summary Robert Grossman is a faculty member at the University of Chicago, where he is the Director of Informatics at the Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology, a Senior Fellow at the Computation Institute, and a Professor of Medicine in the Section of Genetic Medicine. His research group focuses on bioinformatics, data mining, cloud computing, data intensive computing, and related areas. He is also the Chief Research Informatics Officer of the Biological Sciences Division. From 1998 to 2010, he was the Director of the National Center for Data Mining at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). From 1984 to 1988 he was a faculty member at the University of California at Berkeley. He received a Ph.D. from Princeton in 1985 and a B.A. from Harvard in 1980. He is also the Founder and a Partner of Open Data Group. Open Data provides management consulting and outsourced analytic services for businesses and organizations. At Open Data, he has led the development of analytic systems that are used by millions of people daily all over the world. He has published over 150 papers in refereed journals and proceedings and edited seven books on data intensive computing, bioinformatics, cloud computing, data mining, high performance computing and networking, and Internet technologies. Prior to founding the Open Data Group, he founded Magnify, Inc. in 1996. Magnify provides data mining solutions to the insurance industry. Grossman was Magnify’s CEO until 2001 and its Chairman until it was sold to ChoicePoint in 2005. ChoicePoint was acquired by LexisNexis in 2008. -
