Pope to attend World Youth Day 2019 Pope Francis will attend the next World Youth Day event, set to take place in Panama from January 22-27, 2019. The Holy Father will arrive at the event a day after it begins and take part from the 23rd to the 27th of January. This will be the third World Youth Day Pope Francis attends. His first took place in Brazil in 2013, just months after his election to the pa- pacy, followed by Poland in 2016. World Youth Day (WYD) is an encounter of young people from around the world with the Pope, typically celebrated every three years. The event allows young people to experience the universality of the Church and to share their faith in Je- sus Christ. Pope Francis had previously registered online for WYD at the Sunday Angelus on February 11, 2018, the day registration for the event opened. As he overlooked St. Peter’s Square, the Pope held a tablet and signed up for the event. “There,” he said. “I am now enrolled as a pilgrim to World Youth Day.” And he invited young people around the world “to live this event of grace and fraternity with faith and enthusiasm, either by going to Panama or by participating in their communities.” Source: Devin Watkins, July 10, 2018, www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news “Mary did not stay at home because she was not a young couch potato who looks for comfort and safety where nobody can bother them. She was moved by faith because faith is at the heart of Our Mother’s entire life story.” -Pope Francis, who invites young people to look to the Blessed Virgin Mary as they continue their pilgrimage toward the event [WYD]. Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary For the 24th consecutive year, parishioners of St. Agnes are preparing for the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary, as developed by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. The 33-day period of preparation begins on Monday, August 6th (the Feast of the Transfigura- tion of our Lord). The prayers are said personally and individually, and culminates on Friday, September 7th, with the vigil of the Nativity of The Blessed Mother. The Mass and Consecration on Saturday, September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary, will however be public for all who are prepared to make their Consecration. St. Louis Marie de Montfort—the proponent of this True Devotion to Jesus through Mary—proposed that, “the faithful consecration to Jesus through Mary is an effective way of living out our Baptismal commitment. It is giving ourselves entirely to the Blessed Virgin, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her.” Mary is the most conformed to Jesus—and that the more one is consecrated to her, the more one is consecrated to Jesus. The preparatory prayer booklet entitled, Preparation for Total Consecration according to St. Louis Marie de Montfort, is available at the St. Agnes bookstore. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Monday, July 16th is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This popular devotion is most associated with the Sabbatine Privilege - the promise of the release from purgatory on the 1st Saturday after one's death, for those who die wearing the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Mount Carmel, located in Palestine, is said to be where the descen- dants from the Prophet Elias had a religious Order and were visited by Our Lady during her lifetime on Earth. On July 16, 1251, she appeared to the Carmelite Prior-General, St. Simon Stock, holding in her hand the Brown Scapular. “Receive, my beloved son, this Habit. Whosoever dies clothed in this shall not suffer eternal fire!” The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been endorsed countless times throughout the history of the Church. St. Pius IX stated, “This most extraordinary gift of the Scapular from the Mother of God to St. Simon Stock brings its great usefulness not only to the Carmelite Family of Mary, but also to all the rest of the faithful who wish, affiliated to that Family, to follow Mary with a very special devotion.” Scapulars are available for purchase at the St. Agnes bookstore. If you are looking to be enrolled (formally blessed, having received the scapular and promising to wear it according to Our Lady’s wishes), please contact the rectory office. Alone with Christ – amid thousands of World Youth Day pilgrims Despite being surrounded by thousands of young Catholics gathered for World Youth Day 2019, Edmonton pilgrim Ann-Maria Au has been amazed by the ability to feel alone with Christ. “To see thousands of Catholics adore Christ, it was beautiful,” said Au, describing an evening of adoration in Panama City this week. “Every day all the crowds have been loud. I’m always with people. So it was amazing to be able to feel alone with Christ.” Ann-Maria Au and Tatyana Beltran (second and third from left ) were among the Edmontonians on the World Youth Day pilgrimage who were awaiting Pope Francis's arrival in Panama City.Ann-Maria Au Almost 1,400 Canadians are in Panama for World Youth Day this year, including a group of 25 pilgrims from the Edmonton Archdiocese. The event culminates with a Mass on Jan. 27 celebrated by Pope Francis, who arrived in Panama four days earlier. “I don’t know how to describe it,” said NorQuest College student Natalia Sobólska, 23, who is on her first World Youth Day pilgrimage. “It’s beautiful. We’re going to see the pope today and I’m very, very excited to see him.” “We actually saw Pope Francis drive by us a few times already,” added Au. Rev. Roger Niedzielski “I do feel quite tired and sore, but it’s all worth it to celebrate with youth and the pope,” added Father Roger Niedzielski, an associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Basilica and one of two priests in the Edmonton delegation.

  • Ebulletin for 6Th Sunday of Easter
St Mary’s Catholic Church @ @ @ @ @ Greenville, South Carolina 6 May 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, Between the second lesson and the Gospel appointed for today (both written by the Apostle John), the word love appears seventeen times in sixteen sentences, so the message could not be clearer: the Gospel of Jesus Christ is about love. The centrality of love in Christian faith and life often comes as a surprise to those who do not share our faith because they regard the Church as merely an old scold intent on keeping people shrouded in the darkness and misery of superstition and priestcraft so that the Church can control their lives and behavior with an outdated moral code that should have been left behind with the bubonic plague and the Spanish Inquisition. But given the centrality of love in the Gospel, I think we need an explanation of the failure of so many people to see love in the Church, even allowing for the blinders of bigotry and the human inclination to hold in contempt those whose worldview we do not share. So what might that explanation be? I think one part of it might be the limitations of the English word love and the ways in which those limitations impoverish our imagination. Think of the many ways in which we use the same word. I love pizza. I love New York City. I love the Lord of the Rings. I love bourbon. I love my mother. I love my wife. I love God. Languages other than English often have several words to carry the weight that we force upon one word, and this is especially odd given the comparatively vast size of the useful vocabulary of English which was cobbled together from Greek and Latin through Germanic and Romance languages alike.
