IN 2016, the Catholic Youth MiNistry of St. JohN the Baptist aNd St. Mary Catholic Churches helped seNd youNg adults to World Youth Day iN PolaNd to experieNce a reNewal aNd streNgtheNiNg of faith. This time, the CYM is oNce agaiN exteNdiNg their iNvitatioN to the youNg adults of our parish commuNity, because youNg adults are the future of our commuNity, our NatioN aNd our Catholic faith. What is World Youth Day? World Youth Day is aN eveNt that briNgs iN millioNs of youNg Catholics from arouNd the globe iN order to celebrate our faith aNd joy iN Christ. It is a pilgrimage iN which you will eNcouNter Not oNly Pope FraNcis, but cultures of youNg Catholics from all over the world, remiNdiNg you that you are Not aloNe iN your jourNey of faith. Who caN go to World Youth Day? If you will be betweeN the ages of 18-35 by JaNuary 1, 2019, Pope FraNcis iNvites you to World Youth Day 2019! Those that are older thaN 35, but youNg iN spirit, are also iNvited. WheN is World Youth Day? Although World Youth Day is aN aNNual eveNt at the VaticaN, iN 2019, it will be held iN PaNama City, PaNama from JaNuary 19-28. Why should I go? It is a chaNce to see Catholicism iN a whole New light. It is a chaNce to meet people from all over the world aNd see how they live out their faith. It is a chaNce to say the StatioNs of the Cross aNd celebrate Mass with the Pope. It is a chaNce to have a caNdle-lit vigil with millioNs of people with differeNt backgrouNds aNd laNguages, who are all there for the same reasoN that you are: to celebrate all that you caN accomplish through our HeaveNly, LoviNg Father. How much will it cost? The total trip will cost about $3,000*. This iNcludes your rouNd-trip flight, 4-star hotel accommodatioNs for all 9 Nights, a raiNforest day trip, a PaNama City tour, a PaNama CaNal tour aNd official World Youth Day eveNts aNd passes.     St Mary’s Catholic Church @ @ @ @ @ Greenville, South Carolina 6 May 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, Between the second lesson and the Gospel appointed for today (both written by the Apostle John), the word love appears seventeen times in sixteen sentences, so the message could not be clearer: the Gospel of Jesus Christ is about love. The centrality of love in Christian faith and life often comes as a surprise to those who do not share our faith because they regard the Church as merely an old scold intent on keeping people shrouded in the darkness and misery of superstition and priestcraft so that the Church can control their lives and behavior with an outdated moral code that should have been left behind with the bubonic plague and the Spanish Inquisition. But given the centrality of love in the Gospel, I think we need an explanation of the failure of so many people to see love in the Church, even allowing for the blinders of bigotry and the human inclination to hold in contempt those whose worldview we do not share. So what might that explanation be? I think one part of it might be the limitations of the English word love and the ways in which those limitations impoverish our imagination. Think of the many ways in which we use the same word. I love pizza. I love New York City. I love the Lord of the Rings. I love bourbon. I love my mother. I love my wife. I love God. Languages other than English often have several words to carry the weight that we force upon one word, and this is especially odd given the comparatively vast size of the useful vocabulary of English which was cobbled together from Greek and Latin through Germanic and Romance languages alike.

Ev- ery day of the week Rosie and his crew pick up food donated by local grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants and deliver it to the St. Vin- cent de Paul Dining Room, where it is used to feed hundreds of poor and needy in the Baton Rouge area. “It’s God’s work, it’s not mine. God said to take care of his people, to feed them, clothe them and nurse them,” Martina said. So almost every day of his life, Martina can be found in his blue pick up truck, piled high with produce, bread and anything else he can get to help the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen. “I’m trying to do my tiny part. What I’m do- ing I am doing from the bottom of my heart,” he said. When Martina is not delivering food, he is seeking donations from new sources or coor- dinating grocery pickup with his volunteers, mostly retired people willing to help. 90-year-old Rosie Martina uses his pickup truck to deliver donated grocery items to the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room, St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room supervisor where they are used to feed the hungry of the Baton Rouge area.
