DearBrothers and Sistersin Christ,

Now is a time of greattransition for our Catholicbrothers and sisters serving in the United StatesArmed Forces. While manyare home with their familiesin the wakeof troop withdrawalsfrom the Middle East, others remain on the front linesto facea scatteredbut determinedenemy. Those still deployedendure ongoing adversity, sacrifice and danger. Those back home confront major life adjustments- alwaysaware they couldbe calledback to actionat anytime, as areothers who have yet to experiencecombat. Facing so manykinds of hardship, these Catholics in uniformrely on the priestswho serveas military chaplainsfor spiritualsupport, guidance in faith andaccess to the sacraments.

How canwe, as witnessesto the ,be there for our fellow Catholicswho put so much on the line to defendour Country?

In 2013,the United StatesConference of CatholicBishops approved a new national collectionto be takenup onceevery three years to supportthe Archdiocesefor the Military Services- the only arm of the Churchresponsible for priestswho serveas chaplains in the U.S. Military around theworld.

This collectionoffers each of us a substantialway to "servethose who serve."Funds will helpthe Archdiocesefor the Military Servicesand its endorsedpriests bring the Church'sfull range of pastoralservices to the menand women in uniform,as well astheir familiesand patients in the nation'sVeteran Affairs medicalcenters. They will supportreligious education in remotelocations, priestlyformation of new chaplainsat a time of criticalshortage, and financial planning to meetthe challengesof shepherdinga globalarchdiocese that is presentwherever U.S. military personnelare stationed.

The Archdiocesefor the Military Servicesreceives no governmentfunding. Please be generouswith your gift that helpsassure a priestlypresence for our menand women in uniform.

“The Call” is the title of the very first chapter of the United States Catholic bishops’ pastoral letter Stewardship: Special Guests of the 2017 Annual Conference A Disciple’s Response. Their premise is that every baptized Christian is called to be a follower of Jesus Christ and to be a good steward of their life in Christ. Today, twenty-five years Bishop Robert F. Morneau after the stewardship pastoral was written, the International Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Catholic Stewardship Council honors the bishops’ pastoral Diocese of Green Bay, at its 55th annual conference to be held from September 17 to 20, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia. This year, ICSC adopts as its conference image the classical painting The Calling of Saint Matthew by Michelangelo Caravaggio. This painting depicts the gospel scene where Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory Jesus calls Matthew to follow him (Mt. 9:9); thus, changing Archbishop his life radically. The painting symbolizes that universal call Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia to follow Christ Jesus no matter the cost. It is not a coin- cidence that this year’s ICSC conference begins a few days before the feast of Saint Matthew on September 21.

The spiritual energy generated at the annual ICSC Archbishop James P. Keleher conference is always inspiring! Archbishop Emeritus Internationally recognized as the most valuable conference Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas for those involved in Christian stewardship, the annual ICSC conference is a gathering of scores of Catholic stew- ards living and teaching Christian stewardship in the Catho- lic tradition. It offers over 80 program sessions to inform and inspire attendees through the sharing of innovative Archbishop Robert Rivas, O.P. ideas, networking with peers, and providing best practices Archbishop and proven strategies for inviting others in parishes and dio- Archdiocese of Castries, Saint Lucia ceses alike to become good stewards of their life in Christ. July 1, 2017

Dear Young Adults,

Greetings! I hope this finds you well! I am writing to update you on the Diocese of Charleston’s plans for World Youth Day in Panama, January 19-28, 2019. Even though it is a year and a half away, we are beginning to plan for the pilgrimage now. Because of the unusual time of year for World Youth Day, our Diocese will only be taking college age and above young adults to Panama 2019; however, this will still be an exciting, and a life- changing event for those who attend.

Instituted by St. John Paul II, World Youth Day is a week-long pilgrimage organized every three years where young people from around the world gather to share their faith. There will be prayer and music, sharing and catechesis, with a closing vigil Mass celebrated by Francis. We will also get the opportunity to explore Panama by visiting the Panama Canal, taking a day trip into the Gamboa Rainforest, with free time to take in the sights of Panama.

Attached you will find the brochure from our travel agency, Dube Travel, with the itinerary of events and what the package includes. Dube Travel is a Catholic travel agency with a reputation for high service and many years of experience in leading World Youth Day pilgrimages.

For those who are interested in attending, there will be two interest sessions led by Chris Dube from Dube Travel on the following dates and locations:

Saturday, August 26, 2017 – 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2017 – 1:30 p.m. Diocese of Charleston – Office Building St. Joseph Catholic Church 901 Orange Grove Road Ministries and Administration Building Charleston, SC 29407 3512 Devine Street Columbia, SC 29205

If you are interested in attending one of these sessions, please let me know so we have an idea for number of attendees for each session. I can be reached at (843) 261-0445 or [email protected].

Peace in Christ,

Lexie Segrest Associate Director of Young Adult Ministry

Nurturing Gratitude: The Foundation Upon Which the Pillars of Stewardship Stand Presented by Mark Mogilka, Director of Stewardship and Pastoral Services, Diocese of Green Bay, WI

If members of a faith community are not able to see the many blessings they have and to affirm and give thanks for their abundant gifts, it is difficult for them to embrace the call to freely share their time, talent, and treasures with others. Cultivating a personal lifestyle or a culture of stewardship in a faith community is dependent on the ability of persons and communities to nurture the “attitude of gratitude”. An exploration of gratitude well as some practical ideas how to personally and communally nurture this virtue will be presented.
