IN MEMORY OF CAPTAIN ALAN BEAN The Project Fibonacci Foundation® mourns the passing of astronaut and artist Alan Bean. A former naval aviator, test pilot, engineer and NASA astronaut, he was the fourth person to walk on the Moon and the only artist to do so. Following his retirement from NASA, he turned his experiences in space into art, taking the moon dust from the service patches that were on his space suit and putting it into the moonscapes and space scenes that he brought to life through paint. In 2016 Captain Bean spoke at the inaugural Project Fibonacci® STEAM Conference – about how he was uniquely positioned within the astronaut corps at the time to be able to look at that singular experience through the eyes of someone who had the mind of a scientist and the heart of an artist. He inspired the people of Rome and our first crop of STEAM Scholars to embrace both the cognitive and creative sides of their personalities, and allow inspiration from one to influence and guide the other. Alan Bean was in many ways the poster child of all that we’re trying to accomplish through the Project Fibonacci® initiative, being both a scholar and an artist. He was here at our beginning, and we owe him a great debt of gratitude.

There is little information being saved that reflects—now or from the past—the lives of people and families coping with mental illness as well as the social workers, medical personnel, and support groups who provide services and assistance. Documentation of state, local, private and community institutions, research and treatment, and policy and legislation related to mental health and illness is similarly endangered. Much of this vital reservoir of information is being lost or destroyed, mostly from neglect, lack of understanding, or the absence of resources to save what needs saving. If unchecked, this deterioration will result in a shallow and uneven historical record that will leave critical parts of our history unknowable and untold. The State Archives and Records Administration of the New York State Education Department has begun a statewide initiative, called Rediscovering New York History and Culture, that is working to ensure the equitable and comprehensive documentation and accessibility of all of New York’s extraordinarily rich history and culture. As a critical part of that initiative, the New York Heritage Documentation Project is developing and testing an approach to documentation planning that will eventually help all sectors of New York's peoples and organizations find their important stories recorded in the history of New York.

Dissertation Abstract “Genealogies of resistance to incarceration: Abolition politics within de-institutionalization and anti- prison activism in the U.S.” looks at two main sites in which abolition of “total institutions” is enacted. The first site is activism around penal and prison abolition. The second site is deinstitutionalization- the move to close down institutions for people labeled “mentally retarded” (or intellectual/developmental disabilities) and “mental illness” (or psychiatric disabilities). My goals in this study are twofold and interrelated. First, I investigate abolition or closure of institutions as a radical form of activism and sketch the costs and benefits of engaging in abolition as an activist tactic. I highlight the limits of reform efforts, but also the way they are used strategically to improve the lives of those who are incarcerated. My second aim is to demonstrate the interwoven relations between multiple sites of incarceration and the resistance to them.

Dissertation Abstract “Genealogies of resistance to incarceration: Abolition politics within de-institutionalization and anti- prison activism in the U.S.” looks at two main sites in which abolition of “total institutions” is enacted. The first site is activism around penal and prison abolition. The second site is deinstitutionalization- the move to close down institutions for people labeled “mentally retarded” (or intellectual/developmental disabilities) and “mental illness” (or psychiatric disabilities). My goals in this study are twofold and interrelated. First, I investigate abolition or closure of institutions as a radical form of activism and sketch the costs and benefits of engaging in abolition as an activist tactic. I highlight the limits of reform efforts, but also the way they are used strategically to improve the lives of those who are incarcerated. My second aim is to demonstrate the interwoven relations between multiple sites of incarceration and the resistance to them.

I could have, of course, widened my focus to include the surrounding counties that have their own special places of interest, but I decided to leave that task for others. There is enough right here in Oneida County to make quite a big and many-sided book. I should also say that this book is named “Seeing Oneida County,” so the emphasis will be upon pictures and not upon extended text. Yes, there will be explanations and an occasional footnote, but I do not intend this to be a scholarly tome. Most of the information contained herein can be found quite easily on the Web where there are sites for each of the several townships of Oneida County as well as for many of the historical figures mentioned in the text.
