East Mediterranean Gas Forum Charter Signed On 22 September, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority are signed the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) Charter via teleconference. The EMGF was originally established between Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus in October 2018, but was later declared an international body with 3 The Fortnightly may also be found at our Web site of: http://www.atid-edi.com more countries joining it from the East Mediterranean. The forum's aim is to have an international organization that respects the rights of members with respect to their natural resources from natural gas and oil in accordance with the principles of international law and supports their efforts to benefit from their reserves and use of infrastructure. The signing of the charter comes as the East Mediterranean region is witnessing tensions between Greece and Turkey over gas exploration in the area as well as the two maritime demarcation agreements between Greece and Egypt, and Turkey and Libya's Government of National Accord (GNA). Mediterranean countries neighboring Turkey were incensed by a maritime deal signed between Turkey and the Tripoli-based GNA in November 2019, under which Ankara claimed vast areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Tensions rose in recently over Turkish decisions to hold military drills and as gas exploration missions in the East Mediterranean area. Israel, Greece and Cyprus reached an agreement to set up a pipeline in the East Mediterranean to ship gas to Europe, a project that Turkey has opposed. The charter has been in the works since the forum’s first meeting last year, when the founding members agreed to move ahead with creating a regional market to develop the eastern Mediterranean’s estimated 122 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves. Government of Israel Approves Economic Safety Net Plan On 21 September, the government of Israel approved a plan advocated by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Katz to expand the economic safety net during the coronavirus crisis. Expanding the plan will enable immediate economic assistance for businesses and wage-earners who are expected to be hurt by the current lockdown. The overall cost of the steps and the expansion of the response to businesses, wage-earners and the self-employed according to the existing plans is estimated to be NIS 10.5 billion ($3.04 billion). The cabinet also authorized the Finance Minister to circulate a draft memorandum on lowering the salaries of MKs, ministers, the Prime Minister and the inclusion of other officeholders whose salaries exceed that of MKs by 10%.
