Dear Readers, 18 40 years of the Nardò proving ground: 40 years of test- 17 13 ing, innovation, and top performances. We’re delighted to be able to celebrate this anniversary together with you. 6 Ever since the Nardò Technical Center was founded in 5 9 1975, the test center has been continuously upgraded and 16 15 enhanced. Much has changed over the years—and yet in 10 spite of all the innovations, the Nardò Technical Center 8 14 12 has maintained its tradition: the tradition of comprehen- sive vehicle testing, openness to all customers, and the tradition of always being a reliable partner. 3 But we’ve kept one tradition above all: advancement. 7 We’ve always striven to identify and prepare ourselves for 4 the challenges of tomorrow and beyond. So 40 years ago 2 we opened the groundbreaking circular track and today 1 we’re preparing for the development tasks of the future. The anniversary year is marked by this exciting com- bination of tradition, many years of experience, and a forward-looking orientation—and that’s exactly what we want to present in the articles and images in the follow- 11 ing pages. The quarantine bacterium Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca was introduced in the area from abroad and has been widely threatening olive groves in the area. The successful eradication of quarantine phytopathogens requires a prompt identification of the causative agent at the new site, a restricted infected area, a highly effective local organization for crop uprooting and biological features of the micro-organism that would guarantee its complete elimination. However, at the time of the first record, these criteria were not met. Interdisciplinary studies showed that a zinc-copper-citric acid biocomplex allowed a consistent reduction of field symptoms and pathogen cell concentration within infected olive trees. In this perspective article, it is briefly described the implementation of control strategies in some olive farms of Salento. The protocol includes spray treatment with the biocomplex during spring and summer, regular pruning of the trees and mowing of soil between February and April to reduce the juvenile of the insect vector(s). Thus far, more than 500 ha have begun to follow this eco-friendly strategy within the “infected” and “containment” areas of Salento.

  • Hunting for Fossil Marine Reptiles in Puglia, Southern Italy
    The ‘Nardò Fossil Project’: hunting for fossil marine reptiles in Puglia, Southern Italy Ilaria Paparella In 2018, together with my supervisor Michael Caldwell (University of Alberta, UofA) and other colleagues, we published a study about an exceptionally preserved marine lizard of Late Cretaceous age from Nardò, Puglia ( Paparella et al. 2018 Royal Society Open Science, 5(6):172411). The new lizard shows elements like muscles and skin that are rarely preserved in fossils. So we decided to find a way to go to Nardò and further explore such promising rocks. This is how our collaboration with the local prehistoric museum ( Museo della Preistoria di Nardò, MPN) started and this new exciting project came to be. Nardò is a small town in Puglia, Southern Italy: a famous summer locality, rich of vineyards, olive trees, and many natural and cultural attractions. At the scientific level, it is known for important remains of Sapiens and Neanderthals found in caves along the coastline. More Cretaceous fossils were also discovered in the area some time ago, and some of them are exposed at the MPN, while others are housed in other institutions across Italy. At the end of 2018, I was invited by the MPN to give a public talk in Nardò and meet up with the local authorities. Thanks to the help of Filomena Ranaldo, director of the MPN, the support of the Superintendencies for the Cultural Heritage and Landscape (Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio delle Provincie di Lecce, Brindisi e Taranto) and the governmental authorities of Nardò, we identified a suitable site for our fossil hunt, an inactive stone quarry where fossils were collected during the 70s-80s.
