MC 601K—Reformed Ecclesiology and Polity Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Instructor: Preston Graham Jr. Fall Semester 2007 (Fridays: 1:15-4:15) Course Description: No extent of space interferes with the boundless energy of the Spirit, which transfuses life into us from the flesh of Christ. John Calvin, Corpus Reformatorum A lofty conception of the sacramental nature of the church indeed! And yet it formed the basis for John Calvin’s conception of the church as the New Covenant temple of God, so much so that He would later declare, Beyond the pale of the Church, no forgiveness of sins, no salvation, can be hoped for... and hence the abandonment of the Church is always fatal? John Calvin, Institutes (4.1.4) This course will seek to construct an ecclesial and pastoral theology in conversation with the historic Reformed tradition together with its practical relevance to contemporary ministry. Divided into two parts, ecclesial and pastoral theology respectively, both topics will be explored beginning with a redemptive-historical analysis moving to a confessional analysis and then finally to a contemporary analysis. The theological premise reflected throughout the course concerns the sacramental nature of the gospel, or the mediated presence of God unto salvation, as this then is reflected in a “temple” theology of the church and a “priestly” theology of the pastorate, albeit reflected in the classic reformed tradition. Our theological construction will result in both a “High gospel” (gospel centered and missional) and a “High Church” (confessional, sacramental and communal) spirituality relevant to today’s emergent ministry. WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THE PCA Tim Keller June, 2010 My first General Assembly was the PCA’s third, held in Jackson, Mississippi just under thirty-five years ago. Ever since then, I’ve seen a lot of conflict in our communion. My friends in other denominations ask, ‘isn’t there something inherently wrong with a denomination that is filled with such tensions?’ Now church fights are always fueled in part by ego and spiritual immaturity, and we must all share responsibility for that. But I propose that these struggles are also a sign of something good, even uniquely good, about our denomination. I believe our conflicts lie in that we are one of the few Presbyterian denominations that hasn’t pruned of one or more of its historic branches. Within the Reformed churches, there has always been a tension between what George Marsden calls ‘the Reformed branches’--the doctrinalist, pietistic and culturalist impulses.1 (Please read this footnote.) To understand the PCA today, we must trace out the history of these branches in American Presbyterianism. Spiritual revival and the ‘sides’ of Presbyterianism Reformed Christianity puts a high value on the objective—on theological soundness and creedal subscription. But it has also historically given a lot of attention to the subjective. Reformed soteriology holds that salvation is not a human product—it is God’s work. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.‖ Mark 2:27-28 (NIV) This project developed during my personal study for the ordination trials of the Presbyterian Church in America. I noticed that many candidates would take an exception to the Westminster Confession of Faith concerning the view on the Sabbath. Consequently, I began to wonder what my view would be concerning the Lord‘s Day. As I began to study the Scriptures concerning the Lord‘s Day I became more aware of the importance of the fourth commandment. I began to present my findings in my teaching and preaching opportunities. I found there was resistance to any observance of the Lord‘s Day in many church members for various reasons. -

In Defense of Christian Faith and a Democratic Future On the Trump Presidency: From Members of the Princeton Seminary Faculty February 24, 2017 (signers to this statement do not represent the Seminary or the faculty as a whole) We, the undersigned, believe that because God is sovereign over all creation and because all human beings are embraced by God’s all encompassing grace, the god of Donald Trump’s “America first” nationalism is not the God revealed in our scriptures. Regardless of our specific political persuasions we agree that the attitudes fostered by this nationalism are inconsistent with Christian values of welcoming the stranger as if we were welcoming Christ, of seeking to distinguish truth from deception and conceit, and of believing that no institution or government can demand the kind of loyalty that belongs only to God. We also believe that the policies and approach embraced by the Trump administration run counter to democratic values, as executive orders and members of the new administration’s cabinet often seek to demonize Islam, foster white supremacy, compromise the rule of law and intimidate judges, undermine the empowerment of women, ignore the destruction of the environment, promote homophobia, unleash unfounded fears of crime that worsen the “law and order” abuses of police and security forces. We reject the pervasive aim of placing the monetary gain of wealthy classes over the welfare of its citizenry by undermining education, quality employment, and health care. We believe that Christian faith and US democracy are not the same thing; hence, we stand against the notion of a “Christian nation.” But as Christians who are also citizens or residents of the US, we stand against the attitudes and policies that are being fostered in this present political climate. -

Dowey, specialist in the theology of John Calvin and Hein- rich Bullinger and for many years Professor at Princeton Theological Sem- inary, died at the age of eighty-five on May 5, 2003, after a long and full life of service to the intellectual world and Christian fellowship. Born on Feb. 18, 1918, in Philadelphia, PA, USA, Edward Dowey was the first son of Edward A. and Margaret Turner Dowey. The children of a Pres- byterian minister, Edward and his brother William grew up in a strongly re- ligious household. During his years at university, first at Keystone College and the Lafayette College, exploring Biblical criticism, philosophy, and other exciting challenges, young Edward began to question his belief in God. Dowey was nevertheless drawn to study for the pastoral ministry by John Mackay, President of Princeton Seminary, the premier theological faculty of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. President Mackay himself, and especially Professor Joseph Hromadka, made a deep impression on the young Dowey. In 1943, when he graduated from Princeton Seminary, he was ordained as a pastor and served as chaplain in the United States Navy in the Pacific theatre and then in a Navy hospital, until the end of World War II. In 1946 Edward Dowey took up again his theological studies, first in the United States, then in Switzerland. Scott Clark, general editor. Grand Rapids: Reformation Heritage Books, 2009. Pp. 253. $40.00 (cloth) A Sketch of the Christian’s Catechism is the first volume in the Clas- sic Reformed Theology series that is being edited by Dr. R. Scott Clark. This book contains the lectures of the English Puritan, William Ames, on the Heidelberg Catechism. There is an introduction to William Ames by Joel R. Beeke and Todd M. Rester. The goal of this new series is to provide fresh translations of classic works of Reformed theology from the era of orthodoxy. It is lamentable that Clark can state in the preface to this series that “the list of scholars who have extensive, firsthand knowledge of some of the most important primary texts in the study of Reformed orthodoxy (e.g., the major works of Olevianus, Polanus, Voetius, Cocceius, Heidegger, and van Mastricht, to name but a few) can be counted easily” (xi). While most of the texts in this series will appear in English for the first time, Ames’ A Sketch of the Christian’s Catechism was translated into English in 1659. A number of problems with this early translation and the fact that it had been out of circulation for three hundred years led to the decision to provide a new, fresh translation that is faithful to Ames’ words and citations. The trans- lator is a gifted Latinist who is in the process of translating Petrus van Mastricht’s systematic theology for the Dutch Translation Society. -

Restoring the Heidelberg Catechism for the Church We write as faculty members of Presbyterian seminaries who teach theology and church history to express our support for overtures asking the General Assembly to provide for a better translation of the Heidelberg Catechism. According to the PC(USA) Book of Order, “those who are called to offi ce in the church are to lead a life in obedience to scripture and in conformity to the historic confessional standards of the church” (G-6.0106b). As theologians and church historians we feel a particular responsibility to make sure that the translations of our confessional documents accurately represent the Reformed heritage that offi ce holders pledge to uphold. We see this responsibility as in keeping with the mandate given to the Peace, Unity, and Purity taskforce: “to deepen our understanding of our Christian and catholic identity and clarify key themes of the Reformed theological and constitutional heritage” (PUP Report, lines 269-70). Though we have different perspectives on several of the issues that divide Presbyterians today, we are united in the desire to clarify the teachings of our confessional standards. We are grateful to all who have come before us, preparing translations of historic texts for the edifi cation of Christians and the upbuilding of the church. Yet because of key errors in translation, the version of the Heidelberg Catechism currently in the Book of Confessions presents at several points obstacles to contemporary readers who want to gain a clear understanding of the historic Reformed theological witness. Specifi cally, it distorts Reformed accounts of God’s covenant (4.019, 4.074) and of redemption and eschatology (4.055) and obscures the Reformed teaching of our adoption in Christ (4.033). -

REVIEWS The Reading and Preaching of the Scriptures in the Worship of the Christian Church. Vol. 5. Moderatism, Pietism and Awakening Hughes Oliphant Old Eerdrnans, Grand Rapids, 2004; xviii+620 pp., £29.99; ISBN 0 8028 2232 0 Old's first volume in this multi-volume large paperback series issued from the press in 1998 when he was a member of the Centre of Theological Inquiry at Princeton. A Presbyterian pastor, he had already made a name for himself by well-received studies on worship. He is now Dean of the Institute for the Study of Reformed Worship at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina. This well-produced volume maintains the standard set in the earlier ones, and will be of particular interest to Presbyterians, although it is by no means limited to them. The main focus of the book is the eighteenth century but coverage in some areas is much wider. Old divides the material into nine chapters arxl within each chapter has distinct sections on notable preachers. He begins with Moderatism. No doubt to the initial consternation of those who associate this term too narrowly with the worldly preachers of eighteenth century Scotland, he considers John Howe, John Tillotson and Matthew Henry from Britain, and Jean-Frederic Ostervald of Neuchatel, the eloquent Huguenot, Jacques Saurin, and the Zuricher, Johann Lavater. We have a geographical spread, and also a very helpful entree into the Enlightenment period and the approach of orthodox preachers. Old moves through Pietism, with sections on Spener, Francke, Wesley and Whitfield, among others. New England comes next with some 130 pages of coverage on leading preachers such as Thomas Shepard, Samuel Willard and, of course, Jonathan Edwards. -
