Emphasis will fall on its defense of the Reformed faith against the challenges of its time, its influence on the establishment of American Presbyterian identity, and its role in shaping contemporary American evangelicalism. Samuel Miller’s Pastoral Theology Posted on April 8, 2015 by Andrew Webb My own first contact with Samuel Miller, Old Princeton’s Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government, came many years ago when I read an essay that had a quote from his “Presbyterianism The Truly Primitive and Apostolical Constitution of the Church of Jesus Christ.” The quote was just a paragraph or two from one of the chapters on worship, entitled bluntly “Presbyterians do not observe Holy Days.” After reading it, I remember being convinced of his position and thinking, I MUST find the rest of this! Eventually, I found a copy of the book from 1840 in the library at Westminster Theological Seminary; and I have to admit, I probably damaged the spine in the process of photocopying the entire work. It was that book, more than anything else I’d read to date, that convinced me of the truth of Old School Presbyterianism. It brought together church history with biblical exposition and a fervent piety, in a way that few men other than Miller have ever been able to. Those who are familiar with the works of Samuel Miller, will probably have noticed that while his works are all very biblical, there is a pronounced bent towards the historical, and towards facts rather than speculation. As John De Witt put it, “he lived intellectually in the sphere of the concrete.” 1 While he understood Reformed theology better than most, and could defend it admirably, he was not a Systematic Theologian like Alexander or Hodge. You can’t read most of his works and even sermons without very quickly beginning to encounter references to Eusebius or Tertullian or Clement. -

MC 601K—Reformed Ecclesiology and Polity Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Instructor: Preston Graham Jr. Fall Semester 2007 (Fridays: 1:15-4:15) Course Description: No extent of space interferes with the boundless energy of the Spirit, which transfuses life into us from the flesh of Christ. John Calvin, Corpus Reformatorum A lofty conception of the sacramental nature of the church indeed! And yet it formed the basis for John Calvin’s conception of the church as the New Covenant temple of God, so much so that He would later declare, Beyond the pale of the Church, no forgiveness of sins, no salvation, can be hoped for... and hence the abandonment of the Church is always fatal? John Calvin, Institutes (4.1.4) This course will seek to construct an ecclesial and pastoral theology in conversation with the historic Reformed tradition together with its practical relevance to contemporary ministry. Divided into two parts, ecclesial and pastoral theology respectively, both topics will be explored beginning with a redemptive-historical analysis moving to a confessional analysis and then finally to a contemporary analysis. The theological premise reflected throughout the course concerns the sacramental nature of the gospel, or the mediated presence of God unto salvation, as this then is reflected in a “temple” theology of the church and a “priestly” theology of the pastorate, albeit reflected in the classic reformed tradition. Our theological construction will result in both a “High gospel” (gospel centered and missional) and a “High Church” (confessional, sacramental and communal) spirituality relevant to today’s emergent ministry. Course Structure and Requirements: Structure: The course will be set up as a readings course coupled with classroom discussions and presentations. -

CLUTTER The reorganization of Princeton Theological Seminary, leading to the withdrawal of J. Gresham Machen, Oswald T. Allis, Cornelius Van Til, and Robert Dick Wilson, is identified often as a triumph of modernism in its conflict with fundamentalism in the churches in the 1920s. However, a consideration of the situation at Princeton and of the events which took place within and outside the institution leads to a different conclusion. The controversy at Princeton involved evangelical Presbyterians, all claiming loyalty to the tradition of the seminary. The conflict arose due to competing philosophies of seminary education and differing solutions for dealing with liberalism in the denomination. In this confrontation, pitting one evangelical faction against another, Prince ton Seminary suffered privately and publicly. The denomination was called upon to assist in resolving the problem. The solution enacted by the denomination resulted in the departure from the seminary ofsome of the most capable defenders of the evangelicalfaith. * * * INTRODUCTION T the centennial celebration of Princeton Theological Seminary in A 1912, institution president, Francis Landey Patton, declared that "the theological position of Princeton Seminary has remained un changed.'" WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THE PCA Tim Keller June, 2010 My first General Assembly was the PCA’s third, held in Jackson, Mississippi just under thirty-five years ago. Ever since then, I’ve seen a lot of conflict in our communion. My friends in other denominations ask, ‘isn’t there something inherently wrong with a denomination that is filled with such tensions?’ Now church fights are always fueled in part by ego and spiritual immaturity, and we must all share responsibility for that. But I propose that these struggles are also a sign of something good, even uniquely good, about our denomination. I believe our conflicts lie in that we are one of the few Presbyterian denominations that hasn’t pruned of one or more of its historic branches. Within the Reformed churches, there has always been a tension between what George Marsden calls ‘the Reformed branches’--the doctrinalist, pietistic and culturalist impulses.1 (Please read this footnote.) To understand the PCA today, we must trace out the history of these branches in American Presbyterianism. Spiritual revival and the ‘sides’ of Presbyterianism Reformed Christianity puts a high value on the objective—on theological soundness and creedal subscription. But it has also historically given a lot of attention to the subjective. Reformed soteriology holds that salvation is not a human product—it is God’s work.
