Jewishness, Birth and Giyyur
1 Zvi Zohar All Jews are Jews by Birth Biblical and Rabbinic Judaism agree, that anyone born to the appropriate Jewish parent – is Jewish. To most Jews, it sounds quite reasonable for Jewishness to derive from birth. However, such a determination is far from self-evident. Consider a counter-example: if a person was born on a kibbutz, and her two parents are members of the kibbutz, she is not automatically a member. Rather, upon reaching a certain age, she must decide if she wishes to apply for membership. If she applies, her application comes up for discussion by the kibbutz assembly, who then decide the matter by a vote. While it is reasonable to assume that a child born and grown on the kibbutz will be accepted for membership if she applies, it is not automatic. The important point (in the current context) is, that her membership is contingent upon at least two decisions: her decision to apply, and the assembly’s decision to accept her. In contrast, Jewishness is not contingent upon any person’s decision, but is regarded by tradition as a ‘fact of birth’. The sources of this self-understanding are very ancient: in the Bible, the Israelites are the “Children of Israel”, i.e., the lineal descendents of the Patriarch Jacob and his twelve sons. In the bible, then, the People of Israel are made up of persons born into a (very) extended family. Some notions accepted in Biblical times were abrogated or modified by the Oral Torah (Torah she- b’al peh); significantly, the concept of the familial nature of Jewishness was not only retained, but also even reinforced. -

Though a quiet and humble woman in her lifetime, Anne Scheiber’s name is well known throughout the halls of Stern College. Her donation to Yeshiva University has contributed to funding the dreams of many undergraduates who hope to help humanity through their studies in the sciences. Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm, former president of the University, once described her impact on the Stern students, saying that though Anne Schieber died childless, she now has become “a mother to a whole community.” Throughout her life, Anne Scheiber felt discriminated against because she was both Jewish and female. After doing very well in her investments in the stock market, a place where religion and gender don’t matter, she chose to bequeath her savings to institutions that would help young women realize their full potential. Aside from her gift to Yeshiva University, Anne Scheiber also donated to an Israeli educational group for young women. Even greater than the gifts Anne Schieber left us, is the lesson she embodied. -

From the Chairperson Dear Reader Welcome to the Guide to Texts. This introductory guide to Jewish texts is written for students who want to know the difference between the Midrash and Mishna, Shulchan Aruch and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch. By taking a systematic approach to the obvious questions that students might ask, the Guide to Texts hopes to quickly and clearly give students the information they are after. Unfortunately, many Jewish students feel alienated from traditional texts due to unfamiliarity and a feeling that Jewish sources don’t ‘belong’ to them. We feel that Jewish texts ought to be accessible to all of us. We ought to be able to talk about them, to grapple with them, and to engage with them. Jewish texts are our heritage, and we can’t afford to give it up. Jewish leaders ought to have certain skills, and ethical values, but they also need a certain commitment to obtaining the knowledge necessary to ensure that they aren’t just leaders, but Jewish leaders. This Guide will ensure that this is the case. Learning, and then leading, are the keys to Jewish student leadership. Lead on! The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in N the world. ORTHERN IDENTITY IN IDENTITY This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence E or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear UROPE theological position, or on issues of socialisation. It provides a better understanding of how the Jews viewed their own identity while living as a minority among the Christian majority, whose own self-confidence became steadily stronger throughout the tenth to the fourteenth centuries until they eventually ousted the Jews completely from England, France and large parts of Germany. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/ Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the medieval period, SIMHA GOLDIN and inter-religious research, but will also appeal to a much wider readership. EPHRAIM A. BUCKWOLD Rabad – Disrupter of Tradition? A Response to Haym Soloveitchik’s “Rabad of Posquieres: A Programmatic Essay” s one who had marveled at the attention showered on Rambam two decades ago on the 800th anniversary of the completion of his A magnum opus, the Mishneh Torah, I had no illusions that Rabad would be as fortunate. But, quite honestly, I had cherished a hope that the 800th anniversary of Rabad’s passing1—his yahrzeit—would elicit some special excitement and interest. Indeed, I myself was involved in an effort to persuade the mayor of Vauverp, France—modern-day Posquieres —to fete their greatest son on this occasion. Alas, the celebratory gesture never came to pass. Wherein lies the greatness of Rabad? Rabbi Avraham ben David of Posquieres was much more than a great scholar of 12th century Provence (southern France). Rabad was one of those early rishonim whose work made a profound and ongoing impact on Halakhah and talmudic exegesis. Indeed, R. Menahem ha- Me’iri called him “the greatest of the commentators,” gedolei ha-mefarshim, EPHRAIM A. BUCKWOLD serves as Rabbi at Congregation Simtat ha-Givah, Savion, Israel, and as Rosh Kollel at Bet Midrash Tiferet Israel, Savion. He published an annotated edition of Rabad’s Ba‘alei ha-Nefesh (supplemented with an anthology of Rabad’s scattered commentaries on mikvaot), presenting the several editions in which Rabad revised his work. 24 The Torah u-Madda Journal (12/2004) Ephraim A. THE EVOLVING TITHE by Mark C. Shaw Berlin, Germany May 2004 INTRODUCTION What does the Bible really teach regarding financial supporting the work of the church? Different congregations have taught different things and have had differing levels of accountability to those teachings. I have found there to currently be confusion as to what the Bible really does say and does not say regarding the topic. After having delved into this topic of late, I understand the reason for the confusion. The Bible reveals a lot, history teaches a lot, and various traditions, be they Jewish or Christian, have much to say on this theme. This paper strives to achieve the following goals: • Understand Old Testament (OT) passages on tithing, • Understand New Testament (NT) passages on tithing, • Examine the sources of confusion, • Discuss the financial obligations of OT Jews, • Discuss the practices of the NT churches, • Discuss possible applications today regarding Christian giving. Please take heed. So much information on this topic is written from either a bitter or a dogmatic perspective. There are a number of people who feel abused by ministers who they believe manipulated or coerced them into giving more than they really desired. On the other end of the scale are a number of dogmatic teachers (in most cases clergy of some sort) who feel that tithing is an eternal principle that should be practiced in NT times. I am attempting in this paper to be as objective as possible. My wife and I have tried to be very generous and give a great deal of money (as well as our lives) to the work of the ministry over the last twenty years since our conversions. -
