JACOB HUBLEY 1762 - 1833 By Kenneth Douglas Hubley Introduction to Revised Chapter 3 - Jacob Shortly after the publishing of the second edition of the HUBLEY eBook, Robert “Bob” Hegerich did an extensive review of Chapter 3 – Jacob dated November 2007. His review was communicated to me in four (4) Errata e-mails. Attached to Errata #3 was a pdf file entitled Jacob son of Ulrich based on Bob’s meticulously researched HUBLEY family tree. This revision is that pdf file. The date of the file is August 04, 2008, i.e., almost 12 years ago. The Chapter includes five (5) generations from Jacob’s father Ulrich and includes descendants that were born in the early 1900’s. We hope everyone enjoys the revised chapter and we apologize for any and all errors included with the original edition of Chapter 3 – Jacob. Introduction to the Original Edition of Chapter 3 - Jacob I am an 8th generation Hubley, born in Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co, Nova Scotia, eldest son of William Douglas Hubley and Marjorie Ruth Crouse. Both Douglas and Marjorie grew up in Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co, Nova Scotia - he lived in the North end and she lived in the South end of town. My father passed away September 15th, 2005 in his 84th year. My mother still lives in Bridgewater and is 83 years of age passed away November 24, 2015 in her 92nd year. My interest in genealogy happened quite by accident. In fact one might say it was a serendipitous experience involving my wife. On the evening of September 11th 2002 she was at a Church Hall in Welland, Ontario speaking to approximately 30 people. After the session a lady approached Francoise and said to her, "We have three things in common. Firstly, I’m a nurse, secondly I have my BScN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and thirdly, I’m a Hubley." The lady was Maxine (Hubley) Pastirik author of Chapters 1 and 4. Maxine said that every Hubley from Nova Scotia descended from a single ancestor who came from Germany to Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 1751 aboard the Pearl. Maxine left Francoise with notes on Ulrich, website URL’s and a brochure about the upcoming Grand Family Reunion, July 2003 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and hoped that we would be able to be there. The next day I contacted Maxine by e-mail and she and Robert Hegerich helped me find my family line from Ulrich. There were several Stephen Hubley’s but the clincher was my great grandmother’s name, Drusilla Oickle. Drusilla was not a very common Christian name and it helped Maxine and Robert zero in on the right Hubley line. 1 My descendant family line is as follows: Ulrich>Jacob>Alexander>William>Stephen Albert>Kenneth Carl>William Douglas>Kenneth Douglas I was the namesake of my grandfather and my father was the namesake of his great grandfather. My father did not know his ancestry but he told me that he always thought that he was of German descent. He did not say why he thought that. From the research of others, Ulrich's son, Jacob, his second son by his fourth wife, the widow Anna Barbara Eva Leigh grew up and remained very near the small community of Northwest. He and his brothers Ferdinand, George Bernhard and Johannes were instrumental in establishing the first Baptist Church in Lunenburg County. The Church, called the Northwest United Baptist Church was founded in 1809 and still thrives today. Jacob died June 18th, 1833 and is most likely buried in the Northwest United Baptist Church cemetery despite the absence of a stone. Generation No. 1 1. Jacob1 Hubley, born 30 Apr 1762, in Lunenburg County, NS,1 christened 30 Aug 1762, in Lunenburg County, NS,2 died 18 Jun 1833, in Lunenburg County, NS.3 He married Susanna Elisabeth Barkhouse 23 Feb 1784, in Lunenburg County, NS.4 She was the daughter of Johann Nicholas Berghaus and Gertraudt (--?--). Susanna Elisabeth Barkhouse was born 27 Oct 1754, in Lunenburg County, NS,2 christened 3 2 Nov 1754, in Lunenburg County, NS. There is some confusion as to which Jacob--father or son--dies on 18 Jun 1833, and it appears to be caused by this North West Baptist Parish Register entry: “Jacob Hubley, junior, depatrted this Life 18th June , 1833”. Since we know that his son's younger children ere born after 18833, and also that's his son's will is dated 1844, the word “junior” may be in recogition of the fact that Ulrich had a son named Jacob by his first wife. [Bob H] Notes for family of Jacob Hubley and Susanna Elisabeth Barkhouse: The book “Descendants of Ulrich HUBLEY” also includes a Mariah HUBLEY in this family, based on this IGI record: “Married 28 Jan 1819 at Trinity Anglican, Digby, Digby, NS--Samuel Winchester and Mariah HOPLEY”. Since this IGI entry appears to be based on records extracted by an LDS team from the Parish Register , Trinity Anglican, Digby, it is no doubt an accurate record. While HOPLEY could be a mis-spelling of HUBLEY, it could also be a mis-spelling (or correct spelling) of some other surname. But perhaps more importantly, it does not seem plausible that a true HUBLEY would be married in Digby when most brides of that era were married either in their home parish (there were no HUBLEY families in Digby at that time) or a relative's home. So I do not believe that she was a HUBLEY. [Bob H] Children of Jacob Hubley and Susanna Elisabeth Barkhouse: 2 4 2 i. She married Amos Bruce about 23 Jun 1818, in Lunenburg County, NS. The only evidence for the existence of Susanna HUBLEY is a 23 Jun 1818 marriage bond in which the name of the prosepctive bride appears to read “Susanna HOOBLY”. While there are HENLEY's and HUGHEY's in Lunenburg at that time, the name on the bond is distinct enough to see that it is not HUGHEY or HENLEY. Given that she really is a HUBLEY, she has been placed in this family solely becasue no other HUBLEY family of that period has a wife named Susanna. [Bob H] Generation No. 2 2 1 4 2.
