However open spaces as a vital constituent of the neighborhood’s physical structure, have an important role to play. They are the arena of both, neighbors’ outdoor interactions–consequently building the neighborhood’s sense of community- and the micro ecological sphere – setting its parameters and configuring its fundamentals. The paper aims to investigate the roles and responsibilities that open spaces -in neighborhoods- have to take to achieve sustainability goals and objectives. However it follows an approach based on both the social and ecological neighborhood’s ability to tackle sustainability issues. It focuses on the typical open space structure of the neighborhood as the media of different social and ecological interactions. Regarding this concern the paper differentiates between two main categories of the neighborhood’s open space; “greenspace” and “greyspace”. Moreover, the paper develops a three dimension matrix that sets the interrelations between different types of neighborhood open space and sustainability goals and objectives that have to be achieved within the community. It uses this matrix to assess the sustainability performance of different typologies of open space; moreover it determines the priorities of sustainability parameters that have to be applied to an assigned open space. Finally, the paper applies its findings to two different typologies of open spaces in Lebanon; Beirut Pine ‘Horsh Beirut’ as a greenspace, and the historical market, and pedestrian streets in Byblos as a greyspace. The application comes to show the validity of conceptual application of the proposed matrix. © 2008 Archnet. All rights reserved.     Archnet 2.0: Building a new asset management system for MIT’s online architectural library of the Islamic World Andrea Schuler is the Visual Resources Librarian for Islamic Architecture in the Aga Khan Documentation Center (AKDC) at MIT. In that role she manages the creation, cataloging, uploading and storage of digital assets from the AKDC’s vast collections. She administers the Aga Khan Visual Archive and provides access to the Documentation Center’s visual collections for the MIT community and for a worldwide community of users. She also contributes content to Archnet as part of the AKDC team. Abstract Archnet 2.0 is a new front end website and back end cataloging tool and asset management system for Archnet (http://archnet.org), the largest openly accessible online architectural library focusing on the Muslim world. The site, a partnership between the Massachusetts Institute for Technology and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), contains articles and publications, images, maps and drawings, video, archival material, course syllabi, and site records relating to architecture in the Islamic world. By 2012, when the Aga Khan Documentation Center (AKDC) at MIT, part of the MIT Libraries, took over the digital library, the site has become dated and was no longer meeting the needs of its users. A software development firm was hired to build new front and back ends for the site. This paper explores the development of the new back end cataloging and asset management tool, including the reasoning behind building a new tool from scratch; considerations during development such as database structure, fields, and migration; highlights of features; and lessons learned from the process.

This paper reviews the evolution of tall building’s structural systems and the technological driving force behind tall building developments. For the primary structural systems, a new classification – interior structures and exterior structures – is presented. While most representative structural systems for tall buildings are discussed, the emphasis in this review paper is on current trends such as outrigger systems and diagrid structures. Auxiliary damping systems controlling building motion are also discussed. Further, contemporary “out-of-the-box” architectural design trends, such as aerodynamic and twisted forms, which directly or indirectly affect the structural performance of tall buildings, are reviewed. Finally, the future of structural developments in tall buildings is envisioned briefly. Repetition in the ‘Platonic’ theory, via the criterion of accuracy, can be identified as a repetition of homogeneity, using pre-established similitude or identity to repeat the Same, while repetition in the ‘Nietzschean’ theory, via the criterion of authenticity, is aligned with the virtual rather than real, producing simulacra or phantasms as a repetition of heterogeneity. It is argued in this dissertation that the distinction that Deleuze forms between modes of repetition has a vital role in his innovative approaches to the Nietzschean’s notion of ‘eternal return’ as a differential ontology, offering numerous insights into work on issues of homogeneity and heterogeneity in a design process. Deleuze challenges the assumed capture within a conventional perspective by using German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s conception of the ‘eternal return.’ This dissertation aims to question the conventional praxis of architecture and urban design formalisms through the impulse of ‘becoming’ and ‘non- representational’ thinking of Deleuze.

    A letter from China 21 July 2014 Interesting things to do with skyscrapers Much work has been done on Shanghai’s architecture during the 1920s & 30s. I refer interested readers to the beautifully illustrated work of Tess Johnston. Less has been written on the boom in skyscraper building that we have seen over the past 25 years. The vast creation of private wealth here, combined with a government willing and able to make grand architectural statements, has led to a sustained exuberance in the design of tall buildings. It all started here. This unlovely building, the Shanghai Union Friendship Tower, was the first skyscraper of the modern era, completed in 1985, just off the Bund. (The more imaginative building in the background with the leaf crown is the Bund Centre, built in 2002.) Before then, Lazlo Hudec’s Park Hotel, alongside Shanghai’s race Shanghai Union Friendship Tower track, had held the title of the city’s tallest building since its construction in 1934. It was from this vantage point that your correspondent watched President Reagan’s motorcade when he visited Shanghai in April 1984. That’s the Park Hotel to the left, its 22 floors now overborne by the 47-floor Radisson New World (2005), with its “the Martians have landed” motif. This is a late example of the revolving-restaurant fad. In the West, revolving restaurants were a thing of the 1960s and 1970s. But at that time China was busy with its own Cultural Park Hotel/Radisson New World Revolution. So the 1980s was China’s first chance to build something so cool.
