• Final Report on the Grasp-Ian Redmond Conservation Award
FINAL REPORT ON THE GRASP-IAN REDMOND CONSERVATION AWARD Grant about “increasing local awareness about the importance of preserving chimpanzees of the Gishwati-Mukura National Park, Rwanda”. Supported by February 2020 FINAL REPORT ON THE GRANT IMPLEMENTATION 1. Introduction In 2019 January, Forest of Hope Association (FHA) started the implementation of the GRASP-Ian Redmond Conservation Award, a grant co-funded by Remembering Great Apes and Born Free Foundation (BFF). The award was used to increase local awareness about the importance of Gishwati chimpanzees. The main goal of this project was to ensure extensive awareness among local community about the importance of preserving the Gishwati chimpanzees and the best practices to reduce transmissible diseases between people, chimpanzees and livestock. The project was implemented around Gishwati forest the northern part of Gishwati-Mukura National Park (GMNP). This park is home for a number of threatened primate species including eastern chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes schweinfurthii, listed as endangered species on the IUCN Red List); golden monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti, listed as endangered); mountain monkeys (Cercopithecus l’hoesti, listed as vulnerable); a large number of plant species and more than 200 bird species. The project was implemented during 12 months. During the project start FHA was visited by Margot Raggett, the founder of Remembering Great Apes and Ian Redmond. These visits were done just to meet the FHA team, visit the Gishwati forest, hear its conservation story, the work being done, and the contribution of this project on this new park conservation. • Novelty and Canonicity in Lucian's Verae Historiae
Parody and Paradox: Novelty and Canonicity in Lucian’s Verae Historiae Katharine Krauss Barnard College Comparative Literature Class of 2016 Abstract: The Verae historiae is famous for its paradoxical claim both condemning Lucian’s literary predecessors for lying and also confessing to tell no truths itself. This paper attempts to tease out this contradictory parallel between Lucian’s own text and the texts of those he parodies even further, using a text’s ability to transmit truth as the grounds of comparison. Focusing on the Isle of the Blest and the whale episodes as moments of meta-literary importance, this paper finds that Lucian’s text parodies the poetic tradition for its limited ability to transmit truth, to express its distance from that tradition, and yet nevertheless to highlight its own limitations in its communication of truth. In so doing, Lucian reflects upon the relationship between novelty and adherence to tradition present in the rhetoric of the Second Sophistic. In the prologue of his Verae historiae, Lucian writes that his work, “τινα…θεωρίαν οὐκ ἄµουσον ἐπιδείξεται” (1.2).1 Lucian flags his work as one that will undertake the same project as the popular rhetorical epideixis since the Verae historiae also “ἐπιδείξεται.” Since, as Tim Whitmarsh writes, “sophistry often privileges new ideas” (205:36-7), Lucian’s contemporary audience would thus expect his text to entertain them at least in part through its novelty. Indeed, the Verae historiae fulfills these expectations by offering a new presentation of the Greek literary canon. In what follows I will first explore how Lucian’s parody of an epic katabasis in the Isle of the Blest episode criticizes the ability of the poetic tradition to transmit truth.

First to fourth century Greek novelists often play with the idea of their protagonists as wanderers and exiles, drawing comparisons with the Odyssey and its hero Odysseus.

Despite more than 75 years of separation from the Holocaust, AMerican readers are still fascinated with the subject. In her book A Thousand Darknesses: Lies and Truth in Holocaust Fiction, Ruth Franklin mentions the fear of “Holocaust fatigue” that was discussed in 1980s and 1990s AMerican media, by which she meant the worry that AMericans had heard too about the Holocaust and could not take any more (222). This, Franklin feared, would lead to insensitivity from the general public, even in the face of a massive tragedy such as the Holocaust. After all, in his 1994 book Holocaust Representation: Art within the Limits of History and Ethics, Berel Lang estiMates Holocaust writing to include “tens of thousands” texts, spanning fiction, draMa, MeMoir, poetry, history monographs, and more (35).

  • Bot for Google Chrome's Dinosaur Game
dino_bot.md Bot for Google Chrome's Dinosaur Game If you've ever tried to access google chrome while the internet is down, you've probably seen a screen simlar to this: T-Rex Run is a simple game. The user plays as the dinosaur, using the space bar to jump over incoming cacti and birds. It's an easy game to play, and python makes it even easier. Automate the Game In order to automate the game, there are two user inputs that we have to consider: 1. Clicking the center to start/restart the game 2. Pressing and unpressing the space bar to jump To accomplish these tasks, three python modules are used: 1. NumPy - for summating pixel values 2. Pillow - for image processing 3. PyAutoGUI - for controlling mouse and keyboard input Conceptual Overview The goal is to make the program able to analyze the area in front of the dinosaur and jump when something is in his way. The following image shows the two places that the program is using to do this: The blue rectangle is a reference to the area of the screen in front of the dinosaur that the bot is constantly running calculations on. As the game runs, the area in front of the dinosaur changes as obstacles approach. With Pillow, we're able to calculate the sum of the different pixel values specifically in the blue area in front of the dinosaur. When nothing is in front of the dinosaur, the value of the sum of these pixels represented by the blue rectangle is 1,447.
