Imposex in One of the World’s Busiest Shipping Zones Carter Li and Rachel Collin ABSTRACT. Tributyltin pollution from antifouling paint is well known to disrupt the en- docrine system in female marine gastropods. The masculinization of females, including the aberrant growth of a penis and vas deferens and occlusion of the capsule gland, has been reported primarily in neogastropods and is particularly well documented in muricids. Com- pared to temperate areas, few studies of imposex have been undertaken in the tropics, and there are few studies in general on non-neogastropods. Here we report a high frequency of imposex near the Pacifi c mouth of the Panama Canal in two species of muricids and two species of calyptraeids. The frequency of imposex declined rapidly with distance away from the canal, and several species appeared to be mostly normal less than 10 km from the en- trance. This is the fi rst report of imposex in Acanthais brevidentata, Thaisella kiosquiformis, Bostrycapulus calyptraeformis, Crepidula cf. nivea, and Anachis fl uctuata. Because imposex has not previously been reported for the Calyptraeidae, a family of protandrous gastropods, a laboratory study was conducted to verify that imposex was not simply retention of the penis after sex change. The 2007 ratifi cation of the International Maritime Organization’s convention on antifouling systems should reduce the levels of TBT worldwide, but the persis- tence of this compound in sediments suggests that imposex may continue to be a problem at the mouth of the canal as routine dredging and large tides frequently resuspend sediment. INTRODUCTION Tributyltin (TBT) is well known to be a highly effective antifouling agent, used primarily on ship hulls, but it has numerous detrimental effects on a wide variety of non-target taxa. -

In the Mexican Pacific coast, imposex was observed in Plicopurpura pansa. This snail has been used by indigenous people to dye cotton and traditional fabric clothing. During 2010 and 2011, 5 habitats were visited along the coastline of Nayarit and Sinaloa, Mexico. At low tide, 675 snails were collected. Shell length, sex ratio and imposex incidence were measured. Imposex incidences were higher in the samples collected near harbor areas. -

E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The evolution of the molluscan biota in Sabaudia Lake (Italy, central Tyrrhenian Sea) in the last century is hereby traced on the basis of bibliography, museum type materials, and field samplings carried out from April 2009 to Sep- tember 2011. Biological assessments revealed clearly distinct phases, elucidating the definitive shift of this human-induced coastal lake from a freshwater to a marine-influenced lagoon ecosystem. Records of marine subfossil taxa suggest that previous accommodations to these environmental features have already occurred in the past, in agreement with historical evidence. Faunal and ecological insights are offered for its current malacofauna, and special emphasis is given to alien spe- cies. Twenty-eight species are recorded, of which eleven are described as new; Nassarius brebioni nov. sp., Nassarius landreauensis nov. sp., Nassarius merlei nov. sp., Nassarius pacaudi nov. sp., Nassarius palumbis nov. sp., Nassarius columbinus nov. sp., Nassarius turpis nov. sp., Nassarius poteriensis nov. sp., Nassarius plainei nov. sp., Nassarius martae nov. sp., Nassarius gendryi nov. sp., five are left in open nomenclature. Two nassariid genera are recognised (Nassarius and Demoulia). The ‘Redonian’ assemblages and localities are grouped in four assemblages (Assemblages I – IV) corresponding to the four major stratigraphic groups of deposits recognised in the post mid-Miocene sequences of northwestern France. -

For this purpose, the material collected from the area between the years 2005 and 2009, within the framework of different projects, was investigated. The investigation of the material taken from various biotopes ranging at depths between 0 and 100 m resulted in identification of 286 mollusc species and 27542 specimens belonging to them. Among the encountered species, Vitreolina cf. perminima (Jeffreys, 1883) is new record for the Turkish molluscan fauna and 18 species are being new records for the Turkish Levantine coast. A checklist of Iskenderun mollusc fauna is given based on the present study and the studies carried out beforehand, and a total of 424 moluscan species are known to be distributed in Iskenderun Bay. The metal concentrations (µg/g dry weight) in the soft tissues of T. gradata collected from the two sites in Peninsular Malaysia ranged from 3.01-4.72 for Cd, 83.96-124 for Cu, 345-365 for Fe, 6.80-14.8 for Ni, and 2916-4361 for Zn. Overall, this preliminary baseline data can be used for regular ecological monitoring for the effective management of the coastal area in Malaysia. -
