Early one morning several weeks ago, I heard chainsaws, loud cracking, and thecrashing of large trees. Looking out a window, I saw that the fallentreesfollowed a line of little yellow flags that extended from the back of my side yard, across the street, through several more properties, down the hill, and off into the distant woods(which couldn’t really be called woods anymore due to the lack of trees).

Uh oh. The gas company was going to be digging… again.A couple of days later, they dropped off a Mr. John, confirming my suspicion that the projectwould take a group of peoplequite a while.

The daily schedule went something like this: dig out a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon, move all that terra no-longer-firma into several dump trucks who whisked it away, remove old pipe, lay new pipe, bring the old dirt back, and refill the canyon.

There was only one time when they varied from that routine in the following weeks – the day they created the street-widthabyss between my driveway and the exit of the cul-de-sac. It began with asphalt cutting and removal, and ended with repaving not quite good enough for theRoad To Hana.Ah, well. Not like it hasn’t happened before. Ever since the gas company replaced the pipeline in my side yard four years ago, either the sewer or water line has needed attention somewhere below the pavement. A patch here, a patch there... it looks more like a crazy quilt than a street.

Then, one day, the excavator leveled everything off and all the trucks left. Huzzah!Must be time for reseeding and finalcleanup.Uh…wait…maybe not. The Mr. John is still there and they’ve put the yellow flags in again. Now what? The next week, the excavator returned andbegan offloading large concrete pipes from a flatbed. The dump trucks were back as well, this time full of gravel. And there were various Water Dept. vehicles. The digging, removing, replacing, and refilling routine began anew.It has become the giant construction version of lather, rinse, repeat.

Between all the construction traffic, missing pavement, and rain, Old Yeller hasn’t been able to leave the house for weeks. And, with no end to the project in sight, he may be stuck at home until Spring. He’s becoming quite verklempt. The new workshop area, which was completed on time to coin- cide with the beginning of production of the new Porsche 911, is where the body shells are painted inside and out in the desired color using cutting-edge technology. This takes place in a totally dust-free environment – thanks to the plant being completely enclosed. At the same time, a new electrostatic paint droplet removal system and a wet-chemical exhaust air purification plant cut solvent and particulate emissions to a minimum. That means that Porsche can dispense with the otherwise obligatory 60 meter high paint exhaust air collecting stack on the new building. What is more, the very efficient operation, with 70 per cent air recircula- tion, makes for especially economical energy consumption. The environmentally-friendly technology enables Porsche to under- shoot the statutory limits by orders of magnitude.

Only last year the Porsche Cayenne was awarded the Classic Car of the Future trophy in the SUV/Off-road vehicle category. Bernhard Maier, Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG, received the award from the hands of Dr. Hans H. Hamer, Publishing Director of Auto, Computer& Sport at Axel Springer AG. A total of 13 trophies were awarded to the prize winners at a ceremony in Stuttgart.

Customer DeliveriesIncrease By 37.5 Per Cent In September 2011, Porsche AG man- aged yet another significant increase in its customer deliveries: with 10,560 vehicles sold worldwide, the sports car manufacturer achieved an uplift of 37.5 per cent compared with the same month the year before. Between January and September of this year, Porsche deliv- ered a total of 90,972 new cars to cus- tomers. This equates to an increase of 30.9 per cent compared with the same period in 2010.

Bernhard Maier, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing said: “We are ahead of last year’s good figures in all markets and with over 90,000 sports cars sold as of September are very close to our sales target of 100,000 units in 2011.”

All regions of the world posted growth in September 2011. The response from Chinese customers was again especially strong: with 2,146 deliveries, Porsche more than doubled its September 2010 performance in its second most important market. The most successful model in China was the Cayenne with 1.062 deliver- ies. The development in European deliveries was also very posi- tive: vehicle sales of 4,133 vehicles translate into an increase of 39.5 per cent compared with the same month the previous year. With 488 units, the Panamera proved particularly attractive to European customers. Porsche reported a 32.9 per cent increase in its domestic market, Germany, in September 2011: precisely 1,342 new cars were delivered to customers. In September 2011 Porsche sold 2,337 sports cars in North America (USA and Canada), a 9.4 per cent increase compared with the same month the year before.
