Where What When of Porsche Milestones www.porscheroadandrace.com Where What When of Porsche milestones Published: 12th January 2017 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/where-what-when-of-porsche-milestones/ Porsche 1997 model year: (back row L-R) 911 Carrera 3.6 Coupé, 911 Carrera 3.6 Cabrio, 911 Turbo 3.6; (front row L-R) 911 Targa 3.6, 911 Carrera S 3.6, 986 Boxster 2.5 Roadster We spend increasing chunks of our daily activities surfing the World Wide Web, or ‘www,’ as it known. Well, we have put our own spin on the ‘www’ and come up with the Where What When of Porsche milestones. This is a brief look at some of the significant milestones in Porsche’s history, because if we had to get really serious about it, we could fill a book. You may have forgotten about some of these milestones, or maybe you didn’t know about them at all, but at the end of the day we hope that you enjoy travelling back in time and www.porscheroadandrace.com rediscovering what we have found. So, read on to find out more of what ‘www’ means in the world of Porsche! 1931 On 25 April, the company ‘Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, Konstruktion und Beratung für Motoren- und Fahrzeugbau’ (Design and Consultancy Company for Engine and Vehicle Construction) was registered in Stuttgart by Ferdinand Porsche. Executive partners included Dr. Anton Piëch and Adolf Rosenberger. The famous 356 Roadster ‘Number One’ – the car that started it all 1948 Design drawings for Porsche Type 356 ‘Number One’ were completed on 6 January 1948. www.porscheroadandrace.com This was the first mid-engined roadster (chassis #356-001), and it was registered for road use on 8 June that year. 1951 Sadly, Ferdinand Porsche, the company’s founder died on 30 January that year, at the age of 75 years. This meant that he did not live long enough to see the first Porsche 356 SL cross the finish line in the Le Mans 24-Hours in 20th place overall, and first in the 1100cc class on 24 June that year. Race cars bearing his family name would go on to become the most successful race cars in the history of this great race. Porsche’s class-winning 356 SL during the 1951 Le Mans 24-Hours www.porscheroadandrace.com 1959 Just eight years after entering motorsport, a Porsche 718 RSK finished third, fourth and fifth in the overall rankings in the 12-Hours of Sebring. This car was a development of the 550- series which was first seen in 1953. Porsches quickly earned the nickname of ‘giant killers’ in international sport, as they were capable of beating race cars that were bigger and much more powerful. www.porscheroadandrace.com The #31 Porsche 718 RSK driven by Wolfgang von Trips/Jo Bonnier finished third overall and first in the Sports 2000cc class of the 1959 Sebring 12-Hour race www.porscheroadandrace.com 1961 This was the year in which Porsche entered Formula 1. With its well-proven 1.5-litre engines that had powered its earlier sports cars, it may have seemed a natural step for the company to take. But with the benefit of hindsight, Porsche would not be that successful in Formula racing, their race cars would instead become dominant in the world of sports car, prototype racing and rallying – all endurance forms of motorsport. Jo Bonnier in the Porsche 718/2 in the 1961 Solitude Grand Prix 1963 The company’s new model replacement for the 356 was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. Given the designation ‘901’ at launch, Porsche had to rename their newcomer ‘911’ due to Peugeot’s objection to the use of a 3-digit model name with a www.porscheroadandrace.com ‘0’ in the middle. 1965 In 1965, with the 911 still in its infancy, Herbert Linge and Peter Falk brought their car home in fifth place overall in the 4600km Monte Carlo Rally that year in what is regarded as the worst weather to hit the rally since its inception. This was the 911’s first international competitive event which saw just 22 of the 237 starters finish the rally. www.porscheroadandrace.com Rallye Monte-Carlo 16-23 January 1965: Porsche test driver Herbert Linge, and engineer Peter Falk, drove their 2-litre 911 to an incredible www.porscheroadandrace.com fifth overall and second place in the GT 2000cc class. This amazing result was also the 911’s first race as an official works car 1966 1966 saw the last of the 356 models leaving the Zuffenhausen production line, this being a batch of ten 356 C convertibles for the Dutch police. A total of 77,766 units of the 356 model had been produced. Also in this year, over in the USA, the new 906 race car took three of the top eight places in the Daytona 24-Hour race. A month later, at the 12-Hours of Sebring, the 906 took fourth place overall. 1966 also saw the 100,000th Porsche produced, a 912 Targa. 1970 Ferdinand Piëch finally achieved what the company had tried for some years to do, and that was to lift the Le Mans 24-Hour trophy. The now famous #23 red/white Porsche 917, driven by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, swept to victory in a very wet race, opening the flood gates for a further 17 Le Mans victories, more than any other manufacturer has achieved. www.porscheroadandrace.com Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood brought the #23 red/white Porsche 917 across the finish line in first place in the 1970 Le Mans race, giving Porsche its first victory in the race 1973 Having outlived its life in Europe where the 917 was now no longer legal, Porsche turned its www.porscheroadandrace.com attention to boosting power in the mighty 12-cylinder engine for its Can-Am application. The all-conquering 917/30 of Mark Donohue was said to produce around 1500bhp on the test bed. With six victories from eight races in the 1973 Can-Am series, Donohue was utterly dominant in his #6 Penske-Sunoco 917/30. This year also saw the introduction of one of the most legendary production Porsche 911s of all time, the Carrera RS 2.7. Mark Donohue was utterly dominant in the 1973 Can-Am series driving the famous Penske/Sunoco #6 Porsche 917/30 1976 This year saw the introduction of Porsche’s first front-engined sports car, the 924. Much- maligned, this model was effectively the company’s saviour at the time, and spearheaded three additional front-engined models, the 928, 944 and 968. When the final one of these transaxle cars rolled off the production line in 1992, around 386,000 units had been www.porscheroadandrace.com produced in total. Porsche 924 at the official press launch in 1976, La Grande-Motte, France www.porscheroadandrace.com 1979 The Kremer Brothers racing team achieved the unthinkable when the #41 Numero Reserve Kremer Porsche 935 K3 took the chequered flag at the Le Mans 24 Hours. This was the first time a privateer team had taken victory in this race in a Porsche. 1982 The Group C era is without question, Porsche’s most successful decade in racing. Launched that year, the 956 took the top three places in its second race at Le Mans. The 956’s most successful race was the 1983 Le Mans, where they occupied no less than the top eight places! Lined up in formation for scrutineering at the 1982 Le Mans race (from R-L): #1 (chassis #956/002) finished first; #2 (chassis #956/003) finished second; #3 (chassis #956/004) www.porscheroadandrace.com finished third 1989 In the model year 1989, Porsche introduced its first 4WD model, the Type 964 Carrera 4, powered by a 3.6-litre engine. 1989 Porsche Type 964 Carrera 4 1997 Porsche Type 986 Boxster 1997 The 1993 Detroit Motor Show was the scene of the unveiling of Porsche’s next innovation, the mid-engined Type 986 Porsche Boxster. With deliveries only starting in 1997, this entry- level model would prove an immensely important and popular member of the Porsche model line-up. 1998 This would mark the last year for the production of the air-cooled flat-six engine in the 911. www.porscheroadandrace.com In its place the Type 996 with a water-cooled flat-six engine was introduced. Being the 50th anniversary of the company, it was an especially important year for the company at Le Mans where Allan McNish, Laurent Aïello and Stéphane Ortelli would clinch the Le Mans title once again, bringing to sixteen the number of victories in this 24-hour race. The Porsche Type 996 borrowed its headlamps from the Boxster which was launched just twelve months earlier 2004 The new Type 997 version on the evergreen 911 was launched at the Paris Motor Show. The 911 Carrera was powered by a 3.6-litre water-cooled engine while the Carrera S had the larger 3.8-litre engine. Porsche entered the supercar segment with the Carrera GT, shown here at the British Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham in 2004. www.porscheroadandrace.com 2004 Porsche Type 997 Carrera photographed near Reading, Berkshire, England The Carrera GT on show at the British Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham in 2004 2009 The new Porsche Museum/Archive was completed at the end of 2008 exactly on time, and was opened on 31 January 2009. The previous Museum and Archive had been in separate buildings and were wholly inadequate for the company that Porsche had become.

  • Porsche in Le Mans
Press Information Meet the Heroes of Le Mans Mission 2014. Our Return. Porsche at Le Mans Meet the Heroes of Le Mans • Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1 Porsche and the 24 Hours of Le Mans Porsche in the starting line-up for 63 years The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most famous endurance race in the world. The post-war story of the 24 Heures du Mans begins in the year 1949. And already in 1951 – the pro - duction of the first sports cars in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen commenced in March the previous year – a small delegation from Porsche KG tackles the high-speed circuit 200 kilometres west of Paris in the Sarthe department. Class victory right at the outset for the 356 SL Aluminium Coupé marks the beginning of one of the most illustrious legends in motor racing: Porsche and Le Mans. Race cars from Porsche have contested Le Mans every year since 1951. The reward for this incredible stamina (Porsche is the only marque to have competed for 63 years without a break) is a raft of records, including 16 overall wins and 102 class victories to 2013. The sporting competition and success at the top echelon of racing in one of the world’s most famous arenas is as much a part of Porsche as the number combination 911. After a number of class wins in the early fifties with the 550, the first time on the podium in the overall classification came in 1958 with the 718 RSK clinching third place.

  • The Porsche Type List
The Porsche Type List When Professor Ferdinand Porsche started his business, the company established a numeric record of projects known as the Type List. As has been reported many times in the past, the list began with Type 7 so that Wanderer-Werke AG did not realize they were the company’s first customer. Of course, as a result, Porsche’s famous car, the 356 as defined on the Type List, was actually Porsche’s 350th design project. In reviewing the Porsche Type List enclosed on this website, you might notice several interesting aspects. First, although there is a strong chronological alignment of Type numbers, it is certainly not perfect. No official explanation exists as to why this occurs. It is possible that Type numbers were originally treated only as an informal configuration and data management tool and today’s rigorous examination of Porsche history is but an aberration of 20/20 hindsight. Secondly, you might also notice that there were variations on Type List numbers that were probably made rather spontaneously. For example, consider the Type 60 with its many “K” variations to designate different body styles. Also consider how the Type 356 was initially a tube frame chassis then changed to a sheet metal chassis with the annotation 356/2 but the /2 later reused to describe different body/engine offerings. Then there were the variants on the 356 annotated as 356 SL, 356A, 356B, and 356C designations and in parallel there were the 356 T1 through 356 T7 designations. Not to mention, of course, the trademark infringement threat that caused the Type 901 to be externally re-designated as the 911.

  • The History of the Porsche Engineering Office the Porsche Sports Car Brand Began in 1948 When the First Vehicle to Carry the Porsche Name Was Built
newsroom Company Oct 10, 2017 The history of the Porsche engineering office The Porsche sports car brand began in 1948 when the first vehicle to carry the Porsche name was built. Ferdinand Porsche founded his engineering office in 1931. Working until his death in 1951, the exceptionally creative technician, formerly a designer of electric cars and racing cars and the chief developer at Daimler-Benz, laid the foundations for the global company that would later bear the same name. Today, in September 2017, the founding, philosophy and development of Porsche’s predecessor company has been documented in great detail in the book “Porsche: Vom Konstruktionsbüro zur Weltmarke” (“Porsche: From Engineering office to Global Brand”) from publisher Siedler Verlag. The renowned historian Wolfram Pyta tells the story of Porsche GmbH/KG in its turbulent early years: from the origins of the Volkswagen to the transition to a wartime economy under National Socialism and the development of battle tanks, right up to the establishment of the automotive brand carrying the Porsche name. The book outlines the direction in which the creative dynamics of Porsche's founding years under National Socialism led the company, why the company had to undergo a fresh start after the war without its founder and how the global company ultimately emerged from the engineering office of old. Page 1 of 5 Ferdinand Porsche 1937 with a Volkswagen prototype of the series W30 The book devotes particular attention to studying the role of Professor Ferdinand Porsche under National Socialism. The success story of Porsche’s engineering office is closely linked to the “Third Reich” and Adolf Hitler himself.

  • Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance".

newsroom History Jan 24, 2019 “50 Years of the 917”, “50 Years of the 914” and “10 Years of the Panamera” Three jubilees, one big birthday and a dynamic “Heritage Experience” – 2019 promises several high points for the Porsche Museum. With a commitment to making company history tangible, there will be four-wheeled brand ambassadors not only exhibited at Porscheplatz in Stuttgart Zuffenhausen, but also being deployed at numerous events worldwide again this year. 50 Years of the 917 Page 1 of 5 It’s a jubilee celebration for one of Zuffenhausen’s most powerful model series: the Porsche 917, one of the best-known race cars of all time, was presented to the public for the first time in 1969 at the Geneva Motor Show. Just one year later, Porsche brought home the first of a total of 19 gold medals at the Le Mans 24-hour race. The Porsche Museum will have ten 917 models on display from 14 May to 15 September, in one of its biggest-ever special exhibitions: “Colours of Speed – 50 Years of the 917”. The exhibition will give visitors the chance to see up-close a decisive milestone in Porsche’s proud racing history, as the first Porsche 917 ever built – with chassis number 001 – will be on show. The museum workshop team has been working for years to restore it to its original condition as at its 1969 world premiere. 50 Years of the 914 In the autumn of 1969, the 914 was presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt as Germany’s first mid-engined series sports car.
