Auckland Transport have announced they will introduce sweeping changes to speed limits as they signalled some time ago. As I have commented before their rationale is that “inappropriate speed” contributes to 20% of deaths and serious injuries in the Super City. So, from June next year the CBD will be saddled with a blanket 30 kph speed limit, and many of the Franklin and Rodney rural roads will reduce from 100 kph to 80 or 60 kph. A record 11722 submissions were received, of which 2503 were in support, 3317 against and the balance had no firm stance. I could point out that 80% of deaths and injuries have no connection with inappropriate speed. I could surmise that the decision largely flies in the face of public opinion. I could wish them luck in getting public buy-in and compliance. I could question how a major regulatory constraint on all rate payers can be decided by unelected bureaucrats rather than the Council. But frankly, why bother? They are Council Controlled Organisation but seem to have an independence that suggests no Council control exists. I sincerely hope I am proved wrong, but I foresee very little change to the accident statistics and very little adherence to the new limits. Enough said... I have been following the MotoGP with interest this season (yes, I know they are missing 2 wheels) and it’s been well worth it. With World Champion Marc Marquez being given a curry up by the rookie Quartararo, privateer teams often out-performing the factory teams and some scintillating racing it has been great to watch.

In Spa, the Porsche Scholarship pilot moved to the top of the overall points’ standings. When the field set off into the eleven-lap race on the 6.973 kilometre circuit, Bamber immediately pulled to the front of the field in his 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup which is based on the seventh generation of the 911. But after several hundred metres, the New Zealand slid sideways in the legendary Eau Rouge passage, opening the door for Thiim to sneak past. After his scare, the 24-year-old, who contested his 50th race in a Porsche at Spa, caught the Dane and launched a hefty attack to regain the lead spot. Once Bamber finally managed to squeeze past Thiim in lap six, the path was clear to clinch his second win of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. “Our fight was tough but very fair,” said Thiim (second place) summing up events. “Earl’s a great racer,” he admitted. Third place went to Porsche junior Klaus Bachler (A/Konrad Motorsport). “Fastest in free practice, pole position, victory and now the points’ leader – what a perfect weekend. I’m over the moon,” exclaimed a beaming Bamber. Porsche junior Klaus Bachler pleased with third place Bachler seemed very pleased with third place: “I started from fifth on the grid and ended on the podium. I love the challenge Spa presents and I earned important points.” Porsche junior Sven Müller (D/Team Project 1) managed to salvage fourth place despite coming under heavy fire from his trailing teammate Philipp Eng (A/Team Project 1).

Porsche has taken off into the 2014 racing season with a victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona. Porsche factory pilots Richard Lietz (Austria), Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and Patrick Pilet (France) won the highly-competitive GTLM class of the sports car classic in Florida with the Porsche 911 RSR run by the Porsche North America factory squad. With the 76th class win and the 40th for the Porsche 911, Porsche adds to its record as the most successful manufacturer in the history of this race. The 24 Hours of Daytona was the inaugural race of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, the new sports car race series in the USA and Can- ada. The 52nd running of the Daytona 24 hour race marks the start of a new era for Por- sche: In the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, Porsche runs a works team for the first time in US sports car racing under the flag of the newly-formed team Porsche North America. The debut race was a complete success. When dawn broke after a long night on the Daytona International Speedway, the Porsche 911 RSR with the starting number 911 lay in the lead with Patrick Pilet at the wheel. The second 911 RSR with the number 912, in which Patrick Long (USA), Michael Christensen (Denmark) and Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) shared driving duties, followed in sec- ond. The 470 hp racer from Weissach is based on the seventh generation of the iconic 911 sports car and celebrated its race debut last season, scoring a brilliant double victory at it first outing at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Despite being the shortest of the endurance races on the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship schedule, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen is traditionally one of the most difficult. That was proven today here at Watkins Glen International as the two-car Porsche 911 RSR factory effort, Porsche North America, finished fifth and eighth in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class. The Team Falken Tire customer-owned Porsche 911 RSR finished ninth. The GT Daytona class battle was equally intense, as Magnus Racing took third in their Porsche 911 GT America followed closely by the Dempsey Racing Porsche 911 GT America in fourth. Porsche 911 RSR Starting tenth, the No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR ran consistently near the front of the GTLM pack throughout the six-hour race. With works drivers Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and Richard Lietz (Austria) splitting driving duties on the historic track in the Finger Lakes region of New York, the No. 911 was seventh as a caution flew with 10-minutes remaining. A dedicated effort by safety and corner workers cleared the caution-causing incident with time for a last lap battle to the checkered flag.
