  • The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Keywords: Entertainment; Comparative advantages; Services; Trade in services; Internet; Digital music; Technologies; Intellectual Property Rights; Culture; Koreanness. JEL classification: L82, O33, O34, Z1 Acknowledgements: We thank Dukgeun Ahn, Jinwoo Choi, Keun Lee, Walter G. • The Korean Wave As a Localizing Process: Nation As a Global Actor in Cultural Production
THE KOREAN WAVE AS A LOCALIZING PROCESS: NATION AS A GLOBAL ACTOR IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Ju Oak Kim May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Department of Journalism Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University © Copyright 2016 by Ju Oak Kim All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices.

  • “The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven
“The Social Cut of Black and Yellow Female Hip Hop” Erick Raven University of Texas at Arlington May 2020 Abstract Korean female hip hop artists are expanding the definition of femininity in South Korea through hip hop. In doing so, they are following a tradition first established by Black female musical performers in a new context. Korean artists are conceiving and expressing, through rap and dance, alternative versions of a “Korean woman,” thus challenging and attempting to add to the dominant conceptions of “woman.” This Thesis seeks to point out the ways female Korean hip hop artists are engaging dominant discourse regarding skin tone, body type, and expression of female sexuality, and creating spaces for the development of new discourses about gender in South Korean society. Contents Introduction – Into the Cut ................................................ 1 Chapter I – Yoon Mi-rae and Negotiating the West and East of Colorism ............................................................. 12 Chapter II – The Performing Black and Yellow Female Body ................................................................................ 31 Chapter III – Performing Sexuality ................................. 47 Chapter IV – Dis-Orientation .......................................... 59 Conclusion .................................................................... 67 Works Cited .................................................................... 70 Introduction – Into the Cut Identities are performed discourse; they are formed when those who identify as a particular personality perform and establish a discourse in a particular social context. As George Lipsitz states, “improvisation is a site of encounter” (61). In South Korea, female Korean hip hop is the site of a social cut in dominant culture and has become a space of improvisation where new, counter-hegemonic identities are constructed and performed. In this Thesis, I argue that Korean female hip hop artists are enacting a social rupture by performing improvised identities.

Since the late 1980s, Korean pop music has aspired to be a more advanced industry and establish an international presence, based on the economic leap and democratization as a springboard. Contemporary K-pop, originating from the underground dance scene in the 1980s, succeeded in transforming Korean pop music into a modern and youth-oriented genre with a new style dubbed "rap/dance music." The rise of dance music changed the landscape of Korean popular music and became the cornerstone of the K-pop idol music. In the era of globalization, K-pop’s unique aesthetics and strategy, later termed “Cultural Technology,” achieved substantial returns in the international market. Throughout this evolution, Korean Americans were vital players who brought K-pop closer to its mission of modern and international pop music. In the age of globalization, K-pop's modernity and identity are evolving in a new way.

Abstract 3 In recent times, the small East Asian country of South Korea has exploded onto the global scene of being a recognizable force in an economic, political and cultural sense. The South Korean government in particular, is credited through its common financial backing of cultural programs and its push to constantly increase tourism to the country by enacting forms of soft power, which they believe to be the best choice for South Korea’s further development.

  • South Korean Pop Style: the Main Aspects of Manifestation of Hallyu in South America
SOUTH KOREAN POP STYLE: THE MAIN ASPECTS OF MANIFESTATION OF HALLYU IN SOUTH AMERICA VIRGINE BORGES DE CASTILHO∗ ABSTRACT This article aims to understand the appearance of hallyu in the countries of South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela). Other countries (Guyana and Suriname) and territories (Falkland Islands, South Georgian Islands, South Sandwich Islands and French Guiana) will not be discussed due to the lack of information about this phenomenon in these regions. After understanding the appearance of hallyu in these countries, it will be possible to analyze the differences and similarities of the phenomenon among the various nations. The study of this subject is relevant because it is an attempt to understand the impact that a culture that is so different can have on the peoples of South America. To arrive at a conclusion, it was necessary to divide the article into different parts: first, an understanding of the term hallyu and its initial appearance, and second, the understanding of hallyu in South America and its development in each country for which information is available. Due to the immense amount of information, only the most important points connected with the purpose of the article will be emphasized. Keywords: hallyu, phenomenon, South America, culture. INTRODUCTION Recently, the drama Pinocchio exhibited in the fourth chapter of series a dialogue between the characters Hwang Gyo Dong (Captain), Lee Young-tak and Jo Won-gu in which the word hallyu was mentioned. This term is not common among Korean dramas, however the mention was told by journalists (characters) that are part of the press, a situation similar to the actual origin of the word hallyu.
