(2016) 112 (1): 121 - 135 ISSN 0013-8835 © Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Peks Eine neue Art der Gattung Cephalota DOKHTOUROFF, 1883 und Bemerkungen zur Taxonomie weiterer Arten (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Cicindelinae)* JÖRG GEBERT Abstract A new species of the genus Cephalota DOKHTOUROFF, 1883, and remarks on the taxonomy of other species (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Cicin- delinae). Cephalota (Taenidia) hajdajorum n. sp. is described from northwestern Iran (Provinces of East and West Azerbaijan) and from the easternmost part of Turkey (Iğdır). The lectotype of C. (Taenidia) zarudniana (TSCHITSCHÉRIN, 1903) is designated, and the status of that taxon and of its subspecies is clarified. C. zarudniana probsti (MANDL, 1976) is considered a junior synonym of C. zarudniana (TSCHITSCHÉRIN, 1903). C. (Taenidia) susanneae GEBERT, 1994 and C. (Taenidia) vartianorum (MANDL, 1967) are raised to species rank. Zusammenfassung Cephalota (Taenidia) hajdajorum n. sp. wird aus dem nordwestlichen Iran (Provinzen Ost- und West Aserbaidschan) und der östlichsten Türkei (Iğdır) beschrieben. Für C. (Taenidia) zarudniana (TSCHITSCHÉRIN, 1903) wird ein Lectotypus designiert, und der taxonomische Status der Art und ihrer Unterarten wird geklärt. C. zarudniana probsti (MANDL, 1976) wird als jüngeres Synonym der C. (Taenidia) zarudniana (TSCHITSCHÉRIN, 1903) vorgeschlagen. C. (Taenidia) susanneae GEBERT, 1994 und C. Among the insects inhabiting endorheic, temporary and highly saline small lakes of central Spain during dry periods, tiger beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae) form particularly rich assemblages including unique endemic species. Cephalota dulcinea López, De la Rosa & Baena, 2006 is an endemic, regionally protected species that occurs only in saline marshes in Castilla-La Mancha (Central Spain). Here, we report that C. dulcinea suffers potential risks associated with counter-attacks by ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), while using them as prey at one of these marshes. Through mark–recapture methods, we estimated the population size of C. dulcinea at the study marsh as of 1352 individuals, with a sex ratio slightly biased towards males. Evident signs of ant defensive attack by the seed-harvesting ant Messor barbarus (Forel, 1905) were detected in 14% of marked individuals, sometimes with cut ant heads still grasped with their mandibles to the beetle body parts. Ant injuries have been more frequently recorded at the end of adult C.

Entomol. Fennica 26: 132155. The diversity and distribution of Cicindelinae in Morocco, including new unpub- lished data, is summarized and discussed. In total 17 species are reported from the country. Cicindela campestris campestris is excluded from the Moroccan fauna while the occurrence of Myriochila mirei is doubtful and should be confirmed by new data. The area adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean coast- lines holds the highest species diversity, while mountainous regions are charac- terized by lower diversity but also by high level of species endemism. Grouped on the basis of their chorotypes, Moroccan Cicindelinae fall into six different groups: West Mediterranean (44% of Cicindelinae species), Maghreb endemics (22%), Mediterranean (11%), Saharian (11%), Mediterranean-Westturanian (6%) and Afrotropico-Indo-Mediterranean (6%). According to their phenology, the Moroccan tiger beetles can be divided into three groups: 1) spring active spe- cies, 2) spring-summer active species, and 3) summer active species. R. The study was conducted on a small islet located in an area where the highest tidal excursions of the Mediterranean occur. Standard trapping methods (pitfall traps, mobile cages) were used to evaluate specie richness and abundance in different areas of the islet. Diversity indices were calculated for coleopterans and isopods alone. The structure of the arthropod community varied a great deal from one season to the other and differences were found when seaward areas were compared with landward ones. El Bessila presented a particularly rich beetle community whereas only few isopod species occurred. The moderately high diversity levels found for the beetle indicate the influence of the high tidal excursions in modelling the structure of the community. Silverstaining of male meiotic nuclei of six species of the tiger beetle genus Cicindela (tribe Cicindelini), with multiple sex chromosomes, reveals the presence of active nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) in the sex vesicle. In one species, Cicindela melancholica, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a ribosomal probe showed that rDNA genes are in one of the three X chromosomes and in the Y chromosome. Silver staining and FISH show that the related species Cicindela paludosa with a male XO system, has NORs located in one pair of autosomes. In Megacephala euphratica (tribe Megacephalini) these techniques indicate that NORs are located in three autosomal pairs but not in the single X chromosome of males. In all these species the nucleolus can be seen from the onset of meiosis to the end of the diffuse stage; it disappears from diplotene to the end of meiosis and appears again during the spermatid stage. From these results it is concluded that: (i) the nucleolus does not seem to play a major role in the pairing and association of the multiple sex chromosomes during first meiotic prophase and metaphase; (ii) the occurrence of NORs in the heterosomes of species having multiple sex chromosomes is thought to be an ancestral condition for the genus Cicindela; and (iii) changes of location of NORs from the heterosomes to the autosomes have occurred within species of this genus, at least in species showing extensive karyotypic repatterning.

The study presents a survey of the species composition of ground beetles occurring in the five major subtypes of grassland ecosystems, distributed on the territory of Bulgaria (dry, mesic, wet, alpine-subalpine and inland salt grasslands). A total of 329 species of 71 genera were identified. The qualitative analysis of the carabids’ species composition confirmed the potentially crucial significance of humidity for the distribution of carabids. This parameter occurred as the first axis on the ordination graph. The other important factor appears to be the soil conditions, which was the second axis. The analysis of the life forms of the ground beetles occurring in grasslands showed a predominance of the zoophages (181 species; 55%) over the mixophytophages (148 species; 45%). After summarizing all available information, a model of the distribution of the species in the ecosystem subtypes, altitudes and regions was prepared. On the basis of the arithmetical average number of the common species from all altitude belts was developed a 5-scale system for assessment of the species richness of ground beetles and the conditions in the five subtypes of grassland ecosystems.

All the specimens examined in the study were gathered during May and August of 2016 from salty soils around Seyfe Lake located in Kırşehir Province, Turkey. Specifically, the efficacy of geometric morphometrics was assessed in the analysis of sexual dimorphism of tiger beetles. Statistically significant differences were found in the head and pronotum shape variation and regression results indicated that size has little influence on the differentiation of shape among sexes. Moreover, the jackknifed cross-validated correct classification percentages for head and pronotum were 88% and 85%, respectively when using only the shape variables.
