Words From the Director

Welcome to our production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will": Abridged, Masked, and Six-feet-apart. The cast of this play consists of 12 student actors, all of whom embraced this out-of-the box experience, the complexity of Shakespeare's language, and the challenging process of creating this classical play-in-a-pandemic with the utmost maturity and sense of responsibility. I must say I have never seen anything like it, and these students have surpassed my expecta- tions in every way.

"Twelfth Night" has always been my favorite of Shakespeare's comedies and as the years go by, it ap- pears to me that it's themes of love, life, and loss reso- nate even more deeply with our modern society and the issues we face. "Twelfth Night" is truly about love, but - - as indicated by its subtitle, "What you will" -- it speaks to many different types of love. Amazingly before-its-time, Shakespeare seems to be sending the message that love comes in many forms, not always in ways we ex- pect, and that - perhaps - love should take whatever form it needs to. Of course, as in all good Shakespeare plays, there is mischief, and even a subplot of meanness within the story-line (which required some explaining in rehearsal and is pondered still!), but it all is grounded in passion. One thing is for sure, our "Twelfth Night", even our abridged version, has provided the actors with the opportunity to explore vital themes and a full range of emotion, demonstrating that a "comedy" can be multi- dimensional and that humor can also come in many forms.

6

Tackling the themes in this play as middle schoolers takes courage and flexibility and - as men- tioned above - maturity. The amazing twelve actors of our "Twelfth Night" never backed away from their scenes, took all of the notes they were given, and al- ways came back with fresh ideas. Students - it has been amazing to watch you all grow and I am grate- ful to have gotten to work with each of you. I will miss you! Thank you HSA, as always; you are incred- ible women. Thank Mr. Fabbo, a true patron of the arts (and an amazing actor in his own right!) for knowing how much our youth need the arts (which is true now more than ever) and for all your encourage- ment and support.

Enjoy as we bring back into our world.

With warmth and gratitude,

Susan Vardy

William Shakespeare

Early Life Very little is known about 's child- hood. He was born in the English city of Stratford-upon-Avon about 100 miles northwest of London in 1564. William's father was a successful leather merchant who once held the public position of alderman. He was the third of six children including two older sisters and three younger broth- ers. Growing up in Stratford-upon- Avon William lived in a house with his big family on Henley Street. He went to the local grammar school where he learned about poetry, history, Greek, and Latin. When William turned eighteen he married Anne Hathaway. Anne was eight years older than William. They soon had a family including a daughter named Su- sanna and twins named Hamnet and Judith.

London and the Lost Years After William and Anne had the twins, there are no records of the next several years of his life. Histo- rians often refer to these years as the "lost years." There are lots of theories and stories about what William was doing during this time. In any event, he and his family eventually ended up in London where William was working at the theatre.

Lord Chamberlain's Men William was part of an acting company called Lord Chamberlain's Men. An acting company in England at this time worked together to put on plays. There were typically around ten actors in a company including a lead actor, character actors, and some comedians. Young boys typically played women's roles as women were not allowed to act.

Early Plays Shakespeare wrote plays for the Lord Chamberlain's Men. He worked as an actor as well. His plays became very popular in London and soon the Lord Chamberlain's Men were one of the most popular acting companies in the city. Some of Shakespeare's early plays include , Richard III, , and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

22

The Theater Shuts Down These early plays were put on at a thea- ter called the "Theatre". While Lord Chamberlain's Men owned the Theatre, the land was owned by Giles Allen. In 1597 Allen decided he wanted to tear the Theatre down. He locked it up and refused to let the actors perform. They tried to renegotiate the lease on the land, but Allen again refused. One night, several members of the company dismantled the Theatre and moved the timber across the Thames River to another spot. There they built a new theatre called the .

The Globe Theatre The Globe Theatre became the place to be in London. It could house up to 3,000 spectators and had a uniquely designed stage with a painted ceiling, columns, and stage wall. They had specially trained musicians who made special effects noises dur- ing the plays. They even had a cannon that fired blanks.

Later Plays Many of Shakespeare's greatest plays were written in the last half of his career. These included , , , and . His success in the theatre, as well as his investments in land and the Globe, made Shakespeare a wealthy man. He purchased a large home in Stratford for his family called New Place.

Poetry Shakespeare also became famous for his poetry. His most famous poem of the time was Venus and Adonis. He also wrote poems called sonnets. A book of 154 of Shakespeare's sonnets was published in 1609.

Death William retired to his home in Stratford and died on his fifty- second birthday.

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts.” –William Shakespeare When we perform in our everyday life, we need to acknowledge the fact that life is full of surprises and each moment is filled with human emotions.
