Bezio University of Richmond nglish culture and politics in the last decade of the sixteenth century were both patriarchal and patrilineal, in spite of— E or, perhaps, in part, because of—the so-called bastard queen sitting on the throne. The prevailing political questions of the day concerned Elizabeth’s successor and the fate of the nation that, so many believed, hung precariously in the balance. Questions of legality, legitimacy, and fitness formed the crux of these debates, but almost all claimants attempted to justify their right by tracing their bloodlines back to either Henry VII or Edward III, the respective patriarchs of the Tudor dynasty and the houses of York and Lancaster.1 These debates hinged on the 1543 Third Act of Succession, in which Henry VIII stipulated that the heirs of his younger sister Mary (the Grey line) should take precedence over the heirs of his elder sister Margaret (the Stuart line). After Elizabeth suffered a dangerous bout with fever in 1593, these discussions intensified.2 By 1595, when Richard II, the first play in Shakespeare’s Henriad, initially appeared on stage, the conversation had spread out from the Court, appearing in public discourse, both in pamphlet and on stage. In December of 1595, the Queen’s Men were replaying an anonymous play entitled The Famous Victories of Journal of the Wooden O. King Lear | H1 Notes Edmund • Edmund, Gloucester’s illegitimate son, is undoubtedly one of the most Machiavellian and cunning characters in the play. • Bitter as a result of his lack of social status due to being born the “bastard” son. • Questions prejudice society has against children born out of wedlock, “Why brand they us/ With base?” • Feel sorry for him as it is clear that he has not received the same love from his father as his legitimate brother, “I have so often blushed to acknowledge him”. • Driven by ambition to improve his own social status and wealth, whatever the cost. • Clearly an immoral character who has no regard for his family. He hatches a plan to have his brother written out of his father’s will, a shocking act which makes his lack of care for Edgar evident, “Edmund the base/ Shall top the legitimate”. • His malicious nature is evident from the beginning of the play in Act I Scene II, where he tricks his father into believing that his legitimate son, Edgar, is plotting to kill him, “The contents, as in/ part I understand them, are to blame”. • Although Edmund’s cruelty is striking, I feel compelled to admire his creativeness in coming up with a plan to so effectively fool his father. • Edmund is also seen as cunning and two-faced as he ‘advises’ Edgar to go into hiding as Gloucester is looking to kill him, “Brother, I advise you to the best; go armed”. • Although incredibly immoral, it is quite admirable that Edmund so successfully turns his brother and father against each other. -

Representations of Spain in Early Modern English Drama
Saugata Bhaduri Polycolonial Angst: Representations of Spain in Early Modern English Drama One of the important questions that this conference1 requires us to explore is how Spain was represented in early modern English theatre, and to examine such representation especially against the backdrop of the emergence of these two nations as arguably the most important players in the unfolding game of global imperialism. This is precisely what this article proposes to do: to take up representative English plays of the period belonging to the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) which do mention Spain, analyse what the nature of their treat- ment of Spain is and hypothesise as to what may have been the reasons behind such a treatment.2 Given that England and Spain were at bitter war during these twenty years, and given furthermore that these two nations were the most prominent rivals in the global carving of the colonial pie that had already begun during this period, the commonsensical expectation from such plays, about the way Spain would be represented in them, should be of unambiguous Hispanophobia. There were several contextual reasons to occasion widespread Hispanophobia in the period. While Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon (1509) and its subsequent annulment (1533) had already sufficiently complicated Anglo-Hispanic relations, and their daughter Queen Mary I’s marriage to Philip II of Spain (1554) and his subsequent becoming the King of England and Ireland further aggravated the 1 The conference referred to here is the International Conference on Theatre Cultures within Globalizing Empires: Looking at Early Modern England and Spain, organised by the ERC Project “Early Modern European Drama and the Cultural Net (DramaNet),” at the Freie Universität, Ber- lin, November 15–16, 2012, where the preliminary version of this article was presented. -

They remain as Derridian monsters, evading any enclosures, with the tragedy teetering perilously close to farce. Because of this fragility of identity, and Shakespeare’s radical decision to have a black tragic protagonist, Othello has attracted subsequent dramatists caught in their own identity struggles. -
