WHO'S WHO AT MUSCLE SHOALS SOUND RECORDS 1000 Alabama Avenue, P.O. Box 915, Sheffield, Ala. 35660 (205) 381-9200 Muscle Shoals Sound Records was more or less the natural extension of what had become one of the most successful production organizations in the business. The four principals of the production company, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Beckett, David Hood and Roger Hawkins made up what became the legendary "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section". Jimmy and Roger met while playing in local bands at school dances and clubs along the state line. They were later members of an early 60's group called the Delrays. At the same time David Hood was playing in a group called the Mystics. Johnson was the first to move into studio work when he began working with producer Rick Hall as an engineer and their session guitarist. By 1964 Jimmy and Roger were working regularly at Fame Studios with the occasional assistance of David Hood, when Hood could get away from his father's tire store a block and a half away from the studio. In 1966 Hawkins and Johnson played on their first million seller, "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge. In 1967 Barry Beckett came to Muscle Shoals to cut "I'm Your Puppet" by James and Bobby Purify. It was about that time that Spooner Oldham, the Muscle Shoals keyboard player, decided to move to Mem- phis. Shortly thereafter, Barry Becket and his family came to Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was formed. By the late 1960's there were 3 studios in Muscle Shoals and the Rhythm Section was working at all of them.

www.influencefilmclub.com Muscle Shoals Discussion Guide Director: Greg “Freddy” Camalier Year: 2013 Time: 111 min MUSCLE SHOALS is Greg Camalier’s first feature- length documentary film. FILM SUMMARY MUSCLE SHOALS takes viewers into the small but legendary music studios of Muscle Shoals, Alabama—a small town hugging the south bank of the Tennessee River where some of the greatest music of the 1960s and ‘70s was produced. Rick Hall founded FAME Studios in 1960 and drew artists like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, the Rolling Stones, and the Avett Brothers. It’s where Percy Sledge recorded “When a Man Loves a Woman,” and where Aretha Franklin found her voice in “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You).” It’s where southern rock was birthed, and where British rockers went looking for the “magic” of Muscle Shoals. The film includes meditative shots of the surrounding landscape, intimate studio archival footage, an amazing soundtrack, and revealing interviews with music legends. The film also addresses the racial politics of that time and place. Though the Civil Rights movement was in effect, Alabama was severely segregated, with Governor Wallace standing in the entrance of the University of Alabama in 1963 to defy the desegregation of schools. On his way to the studio, Wilson Pickett recoiled at the sight of active cotton fields nearby. And the producers cautiously navigated local restaurants where they went to eat with their black colleagues. But inside of the walls of the recording studio, skin color meant nothing. All that mattered were the voices and the instruments, harmonizing together to capture that inimitable, magical “Muscle Shoals sound.” Discussion Guide Muscle Shoals 1 www.influencefilmclub.com FILM THEMES No one can fully explain why so much great music was made in Muscle Shoals.

“Respect”--Aretha Franklin (1967) Added to the National Registry: 2002 Essay by Meredith Ochs (guest post)* Aretha Franklin When she fell in love with Otis Redding’s “Respect,” Aretha Franklin didn’t know that her version would become one of the most important recordings of the 20th century. She wasn’t thinking about its place in the vortex of social movements--Civil Rights, women’s equality, Black Power. To her, it was a mainly relationship song, the opening track of a collection of relationship songs: “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You,” her tenth album, and her Atlantic Records debut. There’s no question that “Respect” (which made it into the first class of the National Recording Registry in 2002) became a universal anthem for anyone or any group fighting for recognition, for equality, for justice. “But when I recorded it, it was pretty much a male-female kind of thing,” Aretha said. It was, however, “the right song at the right time,” she said. And she was the right medium. Aretha grew up singing in the Baptist church, raised by one of its most prominent leaders, the Reverend C.L. Franklin. The living room of their Detroit, Michigan, home was a revolving door of artists and activists deeply involved in Civil Rights. Among them was Martin Luther King, Jr., who road-tested his “I Have a Dream” speech alongside Reverend Franklin at Detroit’s 1963 Walk to Freedom two months before King gave its definitive version in Washington, DC. From a very early age, Aretha absorbed the notion that respect was not only a core principal of the Civil Rights movement--it was at her core as well.

Under the spiritual influence of the “Singing River,” as Native Americans called it, Muscle Shoals is the birthplace of some of the most important and influential songs of all time, by artists ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Wilson Pickett, the Rolling Stones to Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys to the Civil Wars. At the heart of the Muscle Shoals phenomenon is visionary producer Rick Hall, who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, Hall brought black and white together in Alabama’s cauldron of racial hostility to make music for the generations. He is responsible for the indelible “Muscle Shoals sound” and The Swampers, the house band at FAME that eventually left to start their own successful studio, known as Muscle Shoals Sound.
