Six seeds are in action on Monday – No. 9 Richard Gasquet, No. 10 Milos Raonic, No. 12 Dominic Thiem, No. 13 Gael Monfils, No. 14 Roberto Bautista Agut and No. 16 Benoit Paire – while nine players are set to make their singles debut at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. Two 18-year-old Monte-Carlo debutants part of the Next Generation open the action on Court Rainier III as Germany’s Alexander Zverev faces wild card Andrey Rublev of Russia for the first time on the ATP World Tour. The teenagers played each other three times on the ITF Juniors circuit in 2013, with Zverev – the older of the two by exactly six months – winning two of the three encounters, both on clay. Zverev is making his fifth ATP Masters 1000 main-draw appearance after a career-best run to the fourth round at Indian Wells, where he held one match point before losing to No. 5 Rafael Nadal. Rublev is playing in the third ATP Masters 1000 tournament of his career (2015-16 Miami). Monfils, a quarter-finalist at the season’s opening ATP Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells (l. to Raonic) and Miami (l. to Nishikori), faces Monte-Carlo debutant Gilles Muller in the second match on Court Rainier III. The Frenchman, who has also reached the quarters at the Australian Open (l. to Raonic) and the Rotterdam final (l. to Klizan) so far this season, will be looking to emulate his run to the semi-finals here in 2015 (l. to Berdych) on his 10th appearance in Monte-Carlo. Muller has played just one previous clay-court main draw match at the ATP Masters 1000 level, losing in the first round in Madrid to Leonardo Mayer in 2015. But the Luxembourg native won the only other showdown with the No. 13 seed, prevailing in three sets at last year’s ATP Masters 1000 Montreal. No. 9 seed Gasquet and Nicolas Almagro, third up on Rainier III, have three wins apiece in their head-to-head rivalry. No. 10 seed Raonic opens his clay court season with a first-time encounter with Italian wild card Marco Cecchinato, whose sole match win of the season came on clay in Buenos Aires. Among the highlights on the other three courts showcasing first-round action on Monday, No. 12 seed Thiem attempts to win his 25th match of the season (only Djokovic, with 28, has more) and first in Monte- Carlo against German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff in the final match on Court Des Princes, while No. 16 seed Paire closes the Court 9 action against Spain’s Inigo Cervantes. Wild card Lucas Pouille’s Court 2 showdown with Nicolas Mahut guarantees that one of the seven Frenchmen in action today will reach the second round, while another – qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert – goes in search of his first ATP World Tour match win against a left-hander (0-3) when he takes on Argentine Guido Pella.
