U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship on Sunday features No. 4 seed Steve Johnson and No. 8 seed Thomaz Bellucci. Both players are appearing in their first final in Houston and first ATP World Tour title match in 2017. In their previous meeting in the 2R of the 2016 Australian Open, Johnson defeated Bellucci 63 62 62. Johnson is appearing in his third career ATP World Tour final (1-1). He won his maiden ATP title in Nottingham on grass last June (d. Cuevas) after reaching his first final in Vienna in October 2015 (l. to Ferrer). The 27-year-old Californian has served well to reach the final, winning 91% of service games (32 of 35). This is the ninth time in the 10 years (except 2014) since the U.S. Clay Courts moved to River Oaks, an American will be contesting the final. Johnson will also try to keep Americans perfect in ATP World Tour finals this season (4-0) and he’s looking to become the fourth different American champion, joining Jack Sock (Auckland, Delray Beach), Ryan Harrison (Memphis) and Sam Querrey (Acapulco). Last season Americans were 2-7 in finals on the ATP World Tour. Bellucci has won all four of his matches in three sets to reach his eighth career ATP World Tour final (4-3), the first in the U.S. All four of his titles have come on clay, three in Switzerland and one in Chile. He is facing his fourth American in the tournament (Tiafoe in 1R, Querrey in QF and Escobedo in SF) The 29-year-old Brazilian is the first player to make the final in his Houston debut since Nicolas Almagro in 2013 and the last winner in his debut at River Oaks was Marcel Granollers in 2008. Bellucci is the first Brazilian to reach the U.S. Clay Courts final since Fernando Meligeni won the 1996 title (d. Wilander) when it was held in Pinehurst, N.C.. Both Bellucci and Johnson arrived late into Houston following Davis Cup ties last weekend. Bellucci was 2-0 in singles as Brazil won 5-0 at Ecuador in an Americas tie, while Johnson was part of the winning US doubles team (w/Sock) in a 3-2 World Group quarterfinal loss to Australia in Brisbane. The conference had a tennis-specific set up as well as innovative tennis medicine content with keynote presentations, break out sessions, and on-court sessions. Thanks to Connor Sport Court, there were 2 court surfaces that were laid down inside the Life University gymnasium for very real on court demonstrations. Some of the participants (and even speakers) found some time to even play out some points and warm up with the foam balls and rackets provided! This conference was also supported by Ortho Atlanta, a local orthopae- dic group that serves as the official medical providers for the Atlanta ATP Championships as well as the Australian Open Wildcard tournament. The International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA), was an- other key contributor, and they also helped to arrange an on court stroke technique evaluation for coaches in conjunction with Georgia Professional Tennis Association (GPTA), and STMS one day prior to the main STMS-USTA conference. Dr. Ben Kibler, Dr. Mark Kovacs, and myself provided an enthusiastic audience of many local tennis professionals, coaches, and some medical providers some specific modifications of strokes for junior elite players as well as adult players.

  • Mardy Fish Named Us Davis Cup Captain
MARDY FISH NAMED U.S. DAVIS CUP CAPTAIN WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., January 9, 2019 – The USTA today announced that former world No. 7 and Davis Cup veteran Mardy Fish has been named the new captain of the U.S. Davis Cup Team. He succeeds Jim Courier to become the 41 st captain in the team’s 120-year history and will make his debut at the newly transformed Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals November 18-24 in Madrid, Spain. “Ever since I started playing professionally and started understanding what the Davis Cup was and how special it was, even as a player, I wanted to be the Davis Cup Captain,” Fish said. “I just thought that position was so special – leading the guys and leading the team, building relationships and the team aspect around it. I’m a team-sport athlete stuck in an individual sport, and I love the team aspect of Davis Cup. To even be considered, let alone named the Captain, is incredibly humbling.” In this new era of Davis Cup, the role of Captain will be expanded, with the position working more closely with USTA Player Development throughout the year, as well as traveling to multiple tournaments and camps to support American players, serving as a mentor for American pros and juniors. He will also ensure the U.S. Davis Cup team remains a strong platform to grow the game through the USTA’s Net Generation youth initiative. “Mardy Fish embodies all of the qualities of a successful Davis Cup Captain and will be an invaluable asset to Team USA,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Patrick Galbraith.

2017 US OPEN Flushing, New York, USA | August 28-September 10, 2017 Draw Size: S-128, D-64 | $50.4 million | Hard www.usopen.org DAY 10 MEDIA NOTES | Wednesday, September 6, 2017 FEATURED MEN’S SINGLES QUARTER-FINALS ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM [1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs Andrey Rublev (RUS) First Meeting [3] Roger Federer (SUI) vs [24] Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) Federer Leads 16-5 DAY 10 HIGHLIGHTS • Eight years and four wrist surgeries since ending Roger Federer’s 40-match US Open win streak, Juan Martin del Potro returns to Arthur Ashe Stadium for a rematch. The Argentine is 5-16 against Federer with all five wins on hard courts, none more meaningful than when he rallied from a set-and-a-break down to deny Federer a sixth straight US Open title. Del Potro can prevent history from being made again as Federer and Rafael Nadal are one win from meeting for the first time at the US Open. The Swiss and Spaniard have been this close six times now, including in 2009, when del Potro defeated Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals before beating Federer in the final. • Nadal’s quarter-final opponent on Wednesday is #NextGenATP player Andrey Rublev. The 19-year-old Russian is the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001. Rublev would be the youngest semi-finalist at the US Open since Lleyton Hewitt in 2000 and at any Grand Slam event since Nadal at 2005 Roland Garros. A teenager has never defeated a World No.
