Leading off play on centre court is a first time meeting between Stephane Robert of France and Joao Souza of Brazil. Following two-time champion Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil opens his bid for a hat-trick of Gstaad titles when he faces Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium for the first time. In the third match No. 7 seed Pablo Carreno Busta looks to even his head-to-head at 1-all with 2013 champion Mikhail Youzhny. No. 6 seed Joao Sousa takes on local wildcard Henri Laaksonen for the first time on the ATP World Tour. On Court 1 No. 8 seed Santiago Giraldo squares off against Paolo Lorenzi. All together there are 11 matches scheduled (8 singles, 3 doubles). Switzerland Second Home: In May, Brazilian left-hander Thomaz Bellucci captured his third (of four) career ATP World Tour title in Switzerland by winning in Geneva (d. Sousa). He is making his sixth Gstaad appearance in the past seven years (except ’11) and has a 12-3 career record. In 2009, Bellucci qualified into the main draw and captured his first ATP World Tour title (d. A. Beck). Three years ago, he won the title again (d. No. 8 Tipsarevic). Last year he lost in the quarter-finals. Sousa Reaches 2nd Final of Year: On Sunday Joao Sousa, who is making his tournament debut, reached his 5th career ATP World Tour final (2nd of the year) at Umag (l. to Thiem). Sousa was the first Portuguese to reach the final at Umag. In May he also reached the finals at Geneva (l. to Bellucci). Sousa has a 23-20 match record this year (14-8 on clay). Home Hopes: With Marco Chiudinelli falling in the first round to Federico Delbonis on Monday, 23- year-old wildcard Henri Laaksonen is only Swiss player left in the draw. Laaksonen enters with a career 7-10 record (2-0 in 2015). Both of his wins this year came in first round Davis Cup against Belgium (d. Darcis in 5-sets), d. Bemelmans in 5-sets). The last Swiss winner here was Roger Federer in 2004. Spaniards in Top 100: Four (in bold) of the 12 Spaniards in the Top 100 Emirates ATP World Rankings are playing here this week, with Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers in action on Tuesday. The trio of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer finished in the Top 3 ATP Rankings for the seventh time (2007-11, 2014, 2018), the first since 2014. All three players ranked No. 1 at one stage during the year and it was the first time all three ranked No. 1 during the same season. There were five changes in the year-end Top 10 from the previous season for the second year in a row, including first-timers No. 6 Kevin Anderson and No. 10 John Isner, both former U.S. collegiate standouts. The last time at least two former college players finished in the Top 10 was in 1989 when John McEnroe, Brad Gilbert and Jay Berger accomplished the feat. Other players returning to the Top 10 were World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who was No. 12 at the end of 2017, No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro, who equaled his year- end best from 2013, the last time he was in the Top 10, and No. 9 Kei Nishikori, who jumped from No. 22 last year. For the first time in ATP Rankings history (since 1973), players from five different regions of the world were represented in the Top 10. Six players from Europe and one each from Africa, Asia, North and South America comprised the Top 10.
