All concerts also feature members of Wayne Shorter’s quartet including pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade. “FRIDAYS AT FIVE” is SFJAZZ’s new weekly online membership program launched in the face of the COVID-19 crisis to support SFJAZZ’s ongoing operations and artists in anticipation of reopening. The program is supported by a $5 monthly/$60 yearly membership. Direct support of artists is provided via a “tip jar” that is available prior, during and after the broadcast that is split 50/50 between artist and SFJAZZ. For these four concerts 100% of the “tip jar” proceeds will go to Wayne Shorter for needed medical expenses. Three Faces Management John Patitucci Biography John Patitucci was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1959 and began playing the electric bass at age ten. He began performing and composing at age 12, at age 15 began to play the acoustic bass, and then started the piano at age 16. He quickly moved from playing soul and rock to blues, jazz and classical music. His eclectic tastes caused him to explore all types of music as a player and a composer. John studied classical bass at San Francisco State University and Long Beach State Uni- versity. In 1980, he continued his career in Los Angeles as a studio musician and a jazz artist. As a studio musician, John has played on countless albums with artists such as B. B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Was Not Was, Dave Grusin, Natalie Cole, Bon Jovi, Sting, Queen Latifah and Carly Simon. In 1986, John was voted by his peers in the studios as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences MVP on Acoustic Bass. As a performer, John has played throughout the world with his own band and with jazz luminaries Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Michael Brecker, McCoy Tyner, Nancy Wilson, Randy Brecker, Fred- die Hubbard, Tony Williams, Hubert Laws, Hank Jones, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, Kenny Werner and scores of others. Brecker died Jan. 13 at 57. Michael Brecker, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of our time and of all time, left this existence on Jan. 13 at the age of 57. But those who knew him and played with him believe that his musical and personal legacy will live on with the posthumous album Pilgrimage (Heads Up Records), which was released last week. "It is a testament to the awesome drive Michael had for his life, and his incredible will to live," Brecker's widow, Susan, said by telephone from her family home in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., about an hour's drive north of Manhattan. She added that a posthumous release "was not what we all had in mind for Michael. It is an incredible statement, but we are all, still, devastated." The record is a moving and monumental testimony to and from Brecker, who won the last two of his 13 Grammy Awards this year (for jazz instrumental solo and jazz large-ensemble album) for Some Skunk Funk, a collaboration with his brother, Randy, a trumpeter. Pilgrimage is a showcase, workshop and epitaph for Brecker, made with some of his most illustrious longtime collaborators - pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist John Patitucci, and guitarist Pat Metheny. Brecker's manager, Darryl Pitt, who knew the Philadelphia-born, Cheltenham-raised musician for more than 25 years, said, "When I hear this record, I hear the phrases of hope and sadness, and musical genius and peace and angst, and love.
