Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: David Garcia Allen Anderson Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer Stefan Litwin ©2008 Marc Howard Medwin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT MARC MEDWIN: Listening in Double Time: Temporal Disunity and Structural Unity in the Music of John Coltrane 1965-67 (Under the direction of David F. Garcia). The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works. -

Patricia Zarate Perez Other Bios Performance: Patricia started playing the guitar and singing Chilean songs at age 10 in Santiago and Santa Cruz, Chile. She picked up the saxophone at age 13 and studied in Chile with renowned Chilean saxophone players. She moved to the US at age 20 and became the first female Chilean student to graduate from Berklee College of Music. Later, she pursued her master's degree in Jazz Studies at New York University with a full scholarship. Her saxophone teachers in the USA included Jerry Bergonzi, Jackie McLean, George Garzone, among others. Zarate has performed in North, Central, and South America with various bands in diverse settings. She has performed at Lincoln Center, Chicago's Jazz Showcase, Detroit Jazz Festival, Conservatory of Paris, Havana Jazz Festival, among many other sites, and in countries like Korea, Puerto Rico, Panama, Chile, USA, Gabon, Cameroon, Spain, among others. She regularly participates in her husband's (Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez) educational and diplomatic projects, and her life has been immensely influenced by the musical and non- musical lessons of saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Music Therapy: Zarate Perez graduated with the first generation of students from the music therapy department at Berklee College of Music in 1999, where she met her mentor Colin Lee. She worked as a music therapy intern at the Psychiatric Unit of the New Hampshire State Hospital, where she provided music therapy services to acute psychiatric patients. She later worked at the Boston Institute For Arts Therapies and Arts in Progress where she worked with children with behavioral difficulties, autism, and Down Syndrome. -

(AP Photo/Arnulfo Franco, File) NEW YORK (AP) — Herbie Hancock reckons he's performed more often in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his professional career. The pianist will be back next month for an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park highlighting the third annual International Jazz Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has chosen Osaka as the host city for International Jazz Day 2014, which will be celebrated around the world on April 30. Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says it's an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans who have been among the world's greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis' quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades. "Japanese audiences are very loyal," said Hancock, interviewed ahead of Tuesday's official announcement of the International Jazz Day program. -

Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Media support for the 13/14 Jazz Series provided by WRTI and City Paper. 10 | ABOUT THE ARTISTS Gary Burton (Vibraphone) Born in 1943 and raised in Indiana, Gary Burton taught himself to play the vibraphone. At the age of 17, Burton made his recording debut in Nashville with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. Two years later, Burton left his studies at Berklee College of Music to join George Shearing and Stan Getz, with whom he worked from 1964 to 1966. As a member of Getz's quartet, Burton won Down Beat Magazine's “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition” award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had recorded three solo albums. Borrowing rhythms and sonorities from rock music, while maintaining jazz's emphasis on improvisation and harmonic complexity, Burton's first quartet attracted large audiences from both sides of the jazz-rock spectrum. Such albums as Duster and Lofty Fake Anagram established Burton and his band as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon. -

The pair formed Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band in 1997 and has released five albums. Blade has performed and toured with Daniel Lanois, Ellis Marsalis, Bob Dylan and many other artists and, since 2000, has been the drummer with The Wayne Shorter Quartet. He has recorded and toured with Joni Mitchell since 1995, performing on her albums Taming The Tiger, Travelogue and Shine. Jon Cowherd: Jon Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, with whom he co-founded the GRAMMY-nominated Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Together, their acclaimed, influential albums showcase Cowherd's stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills. In 2017, Cowherd released Gateway, a new recording on the exclusive, vinyl only, Newvelle record label. He has played and recorded with Joni Mitchell as part of a collaboration with Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band. Christopher Thomas: GRAMMY-nominated Christopher Thomas was born in 1970 in St. Louis, Missouri. Although he’s the only musician in his family, Thomas took to music as if he were a born legacy. His musical venture began with the violin, and then quickly gravitated towards the cello. He began his bass studies under the guidance of Henry Lowe, principal bassist of the St. Louis Symphony. Thomas later attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he studied under the tutelage of Richard Davis.
