Reflective Paper – My Experience in BGJI, Class of 2019
Reflective paper – my experience in BGJI, class of 2019 My time could be summed up in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute as nothing short of transformative. I have been challenged and stretched beyond my previous predictions and anticipations. The experiences, opportunities and situations I have been exposed to over the past 10 months have cracked me open as musician and human being and led me to realise that there is nothing that can’t be accessed and achieved when one has pure-hearted motive, conviction and persistence. My time could be summed up in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute as nothing short of transformative. I have been challenged and stretched beyond my previous predictions and anticipations. The experiences, opportunities and situations I have been exposed to over the past 10 months have cracked me open as musician and human being and led me to realise that there is nothing that can’t be accessed and achieved when one has pure-hearted motive, conviction and persistence. I began playing the drums at 14 years old and instantly fell in love with the rhythmic responsibility playing a percussion instrument granted me. Since performing professionally at age 16, I have strived to study and seek out guidance and direction towards becoming the greatest musician and drummer I can possible. This serendipitously led me to undertake a Masters degree in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, spearheaded by artistic director and master pianist Danilo Perez and managing director and renowned saxophonist Marco Pignataro. Through collaborating and learning from the highest calibre of musicians (Terri-Lyne Carrington, Ben Street, John Pattitucci, Joe Lovano, Alan Pasqua and George Garzone, to name a few), including Perez and Pignataro, I experienced and was consistently exposed first-hand, to examples to some of the highest peaks of musical and artistic mastery, accomplishment and integrity. -

JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds. -

The performance in Overture Hall on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at 7:30 p.m., showcases both the dynamic individual artistry of each icon and the powerful unifying threads between them which helped shape and inform not only the evolution of jazz but modern music as we now recognize it. TD Jazz: The Roots of Jazz Danilo Pérez with Ben Street & Terri Lyne Carrington: Panamonk and Alfredo Rodríguez Trio Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 8:00pm This is the 779th concert in Koerner Hall Danilo Pérez, piano Ben Street, bass Terri Lyne Carrington, drums Alfredo Rodríguez, piano Ricardo Rodríguez, bass Ferenc Nemeth, drums Danilo Pérez Pianist, composer, educator, and social activist, Danilo Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. He studied jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music and, while still a student, he performed with Jon Hendricks, Terence Blanchard, Slide Hampton, Claudio Roditi, and Paquito D’Rivera. Quickly established as a young master, he soon toured and/or recorded with artists such as the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton, and Roy Haynes. In 2000, he joined Wayne Shorter to form Shorter’s quartet with John Patitucci and Brian Blade and, since 2003, he has been touring with regular trio featuring Ben Street and Adam Cruz. In 1993, Pérez turned his focus to his own ensembles and recording projects, releasing eight albums as a leader, earning Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations. In 1996, he recorded Panamonk, a tribute to Thelonious Monk, which according to DownBeat magazine is one of the most important jazz piano albums in history. Pérez, who served as Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF, has received a variety of awards for his musical achievements, activism, and social work efforts. He currently serves as UNESCO Artist for Peace, Cultural Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, Founder and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival, and Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston’s Berklee College of Music. -

A generation of musicians and fans see and hear him as a humble master who created a timeless vocabulary – as vital as it is unbound. B I O G R A P H Y His Music ___________________________________________________ A very distinctive trait of New York/Boston‐based jazz pianist Kevin Harris is his desire to constantly grow, evolve, improve, and advance. Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music that seeks to celebrate the musical influences of Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis intersecting with J.S. Bach, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric African rhythms of the Caribbean. Among his most notable collaborations are Greg Osby, Bill Pierce, Francisco Mela, Avishai Cohen, Eddie Gomez, Duane Eubanks, Richie Barshay, Ben Street, Jason Palmer, Rudy Royston, Frank Lacey, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Curtis Lundy, Eric McPherson, Dayna Stephens, Ralph Peterson, Ameen Saleem, Greg Hutchinson, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Fred Hersch talks of Harris as one who “plays and writes with flair and real soul", and DownBeat Magazine writes that “Harris' compositions deal with themes of strength, love, courage, and self‐awareness. After graduating from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, he joined the world-famous Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and toured with them for ten years. Tracy has performed with such greats as Louis Bellson, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters, Buddy Rich, and Mel Torme. He also has performed with the Temptations, Four Tops, and the Seattle Symphony. He can be heard on commercial recordings by the Charlie May All-Star Big Band, Keith Henson, Octet, Pony Boy All-Star Big Band, and the Tracy Knoop Quartet. He continues to perform and teach extensively throughout the Northwest and across the country.
