Lescure and Yep: Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 3, Edition 2 (Spring 2015): Queer Media Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations of Sexuality Overview and Rationale With a focus on aging sexual minorities, a population often overlooked by both queer theory and mediated representations, this classroom activity invites students to critically examine the intersection of queerness and television. First, students will get a brief introduction to queer theory and dialectical thinking. Second, students will view the made-for-television HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Third, students will engage in a queer dialectical analysis of the intersection of queerness and aging in the TV program. Influenced by poststructuralism, critical theory, feminism, and cultural studies, queer theory provides an open theoretical system to view, understand, and analyze social relations (Berlant & Warner, 1995; Jagose, 1996; Yep, 2003). More specifically, queer theory is both a conceptual model and a set of analytical tools to deconstruct power relations (i.e., the ways power functions and operates in our relationships) and the violence of normativity (i.e., the potentially harmful effects of social norms on bodies, identities, and communities) (Yep & Schönfeldt-Aultman, 2012).

  • 2011-2012 Wisconsin Blue Book: Statistics
STATISTICS: HISTORY 679 HIGHLIGHTS OF HISTORY IN WISCONSIN History — On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin became the 30th state in the Union, but the state’s written history dates back more than 300 years to the time when the French first encountered the diverse Native Americans who lived here. In 1634, the French explorer Jean Nicolet landed at Green Bay, reportedly becoming the first European to visit Wisconsin. The French ceded the area to Great Britain in 1763, and it became part of the United States in 1783. First organized under the Northwest Ordinance, the area was part of various territories until creation of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836. Since statehood, Wisconsin has been a wheat farming area, a lumbering frontier, and a preeminent dairy state. Tourism has grown in importance, and industry has concentrated in the eastern and southeastern part of the state. Politically, the state has enjoyed a reputation for honest, efficient government. It is known as the birthplace of the Republican Party and the home of Robert M. La Follette, Sr., founder of the progressive movement. Political Balance — After being primarily a one-party state for most of its existence, with the Republican and Progressive Parties dominating during portions of the state’s first century, Wisconsin has become a politically competitive state in recent decades. The Republicans gained majority control in both houses in the 1995 Legislature, an advantage they last held during the 1969 session. Since then, control of the senate has changed several times. In 2009, the Democrats gained control of both houses for the first time since 1993; both houses returned to Republican control in 2011.

SISSY!: THE EFFEMINATE GROTESQUE IN U.S. LITERATURE AND CULTURE SINCE 1940 Harry Osborne Thomas Jr. A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2011 Approved by: Minrose Gwin Fred Hobson John Howard Timothy Marr Ruth Salvaggio ©2011 Harry Osborne Thomas Jr. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT HARRY OSBORNE THOMAS JR: Sissy!: The Effeminate Grotesque in U.S. Literature and Culture Since 1940 (Under the direction of Minrose Gwin) In his memoir Firebird, Mark Doty explains that being effeminate in postwar America means being treated paradoxically: “The queer boy’s dynamic,” he writes, is to be “simultaneously debased and elevated.” This study explores the paradox that Doty describes by examining representations of effeminate men and boys in U.S. literature and culture from 1940 to the present. I argue that effeminacy has routinely been depicted in terms of the grotesque, a mode of visual and textual representation concerned with bodies that provoke mixed feelings of both revulsion and fascination. By reading effeminacy through the critical lens of the grotesque, I re- evaluate its queer theoretical potential, and highlight a previously overlooked discursive tradition in U.S. literature and culture. In this tradition, effeminacy is embraced, rather than rejected, because it models new modes of masculine embodiment and functions symbolically as an alternative to the strictures of heteronormativity. This claim both extends and complicates previous scholarship on effeminacy, which focuses almost exclusively on how effeminacy has been hated in U.S.

70 YEARS OF EMMY® 1948 The Emmy Awards are conceived. The Television Academy’s founding fathers struggle to name the award: Television Academy founder Syd Cassyd suggests “Ike,” the nickname for the television iconoscope tube. Pioneer television engineer and future (1949) Academy president Harry Lubcke suggests “Immy,” a nickname for the image-orthicon camera tube instrumental in the technical development of television. “Immy” is feminized as “Emmy” because the statuette, designed by engineer Louis McManus (who enlisted his wife Dorothy to model for it) depicts the winged “muse of art uplifting the electron of science.” 1949 First Emmy Awards – given to Los Angeles area programming – take place at the Hollywood Athletic Club on January 25. Tickets are $5.00. It is broadcast on local station KTSL. There are less than a million television sets in the U.S. The master of ceremonies was popular TV host Walter O’Keefe. Six awards are given: ● Most Outstanding Television Personality: Twenty-year-old Shirley Dinsdale and her puppet sidekick Judy Splinters for “The Judy Splinters Show.” ● The Station Award for Outstanding Overall Achievement: KTLA (the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River). ● Technical Award: Engineer Charles Mesak of Don Lee Television for the introduction of TV camera technology. ● The Best Film Made for Television: “The Necklace” (a half hour adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's classic short story). ● Most Popular Television Program: “Pantomime Quiz.” ● A special Emmy is presented to Louis McManus for designing the statuette. 1950 Second Emmy Awards (January 27, Ambassador Hotel) ● KFI-TV broadcasts, the six other Los Angeles area stations share expense of the telecast.
