Graphics & Layout Jonatan Victor (jonatanvictor.se) 2 and Anton Björklund Welcome to SAAB country 1.1 Dear SAAB enthusiasts,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Sweden and the Vadstena – Linköping area in the region of Östergötland. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us. Never before (and probably never again) will all the guests of the IntSAAB community, the members of the Swedish SAAB Club and the citizens of Sweden have such a full attention about the early SAAB cars in Linköping.

This has been a long time dream to make possible and the- re are so many hours of preparation that finally will boom at one single occasion to our common joy. Together with the IntSAAB 2016 event there are also several anniversaries to respect; The Ur-SAAB internal premiere (1946) and the official premiere the year after (10th of june 1947), the launch of the Sonett (1956), the V4 presentation (1966), the Swedish SAAB Club 40 years anniversary (1976), the 9000 Talladega Run (1986), and so on. And of course it is the ’s hometown.

We have tried to give all of them a piece of attention during this event, but we have also worked hard on finding things to display that are a little extra and different from our ordinary knowledge of SAAB. But the main ingredient of an IntSAAB event is always the participants themselves and their vehic- les. So please enjoy your stay and be proud to show your cars In the city of Linköping the citizens are while entering the birth place of many special SAAB vehicles. used to see lot of SAAB on the streets. By Matthias Roswall

Through many centuries Vadstena has played an important role in politics and religion. Sin- ce the 13th century Royal dynasties has acted here. Read, walk around, discover and look! It will be an exciting journey we have in front of us those three days.

S:t Bridget (1303-1373) and the king Gustav Vasa(1496-1560) acted considerable parts of their lifes here in Vadstena. Bridget, established her monastic order here in Vadstena which through the times have given Vadstena a role of a ecclesiastical centre of Sweden. It has been, and still is, a very well known goal for pilgrims. Two monasteries are nowadays situated here, one of them close the origin medieval monastery area. Then King Gustav Vasa started to build the castle of Vadstena in 1545. It is the base from our meeting and you will have several opportunities to see it from outside and inside during those days. But please don´t think that this castle is our only one with royal origin and connections—behind the huge monastery church you will find the Palace of the Bjälbo strain, from about 1250.

Many business activities have taken place in Vadstena—and takes place today too. The agricultural sector has always been huge—the fields around Vadstena belongs to the most fertile areas in Sweden. In the past fishing on the lake Vättern had an important role, then sugar production and later on textile industry. The transport was done by lively harbor traffic over the channels and the lake, connected with the narrow-gauge railway from 1860 from which 10 kilometers still is operated today by enthusiasts. Don’t miss the railway area and why not take a trip with the museum train? Vadstena has also become a national centre for the textile-art lace making—you will find several small shops specialized on this. And so on…

Take your time. We recommend the monastery church (one of the biggest medieval churches in Sweden from the year of 1430, daily open), the castle, the old town centre of Vadstena, the museum railway and all the medieval palaces, connected with the oldest parts of the monastery area.

1.3 Linköping History

By Bo Lindman

All the way back to the Vikings, Linköping area has been an important Swedish centre for trading, religi- on and culture. In the year 1104 Linköping was mentioned in writings together with all the Christian epis- copate in the country. The first cathedral was built at the very beginning of the 12th century along with the first Swedish monastery in Vreta Kloster, 10km from Linköping. The current cathedral (the second largest in Sweden) construction was initiated in 1230. This became not only one of the most important religious centre’s, there was also a cathedral school founded in year 1232 that still brings traditions to today’s university.

At 1528 there was a bloody battle at Stångebro between Catholic’s and Protestants. The Protestants won under the leadership of Duke Karl and ever sense Linköping has been an important military town with at most four military units at the same time during the early 20th century. In 1911 Baron Carl Ceder- sköld made the first official airplane flight here, so when the Swedish Air force was declared active in 1926 as an independent branch, “Malmen”-area was the natural choice of the air activity centre. 4 1.4 SAAB Sweden - The East Side Story

By Bo Lindman

With the historical background of Linköping it is not surprising that it also became the base of the Swedish airplane manufacturing industry. In 1937 there was a strategic need for military aircraft produc- tion inside the country, so it was decided from government direction that heavy industry and locomo- tive manufacturer company Nohab (who had a minor airplane manufacturing site in Trollhättan) should be merged with vehicle manufacturer ASJ airplane division in Linköping to ensure full capability of all joined resources.

Together they formed SAAB – Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget. Headquarter and design department were placed in Linköping, while manufacturing was held in Trollhättan at Stallbacka site until the end of WWII. The first in house design and construction was the SAAB B17, a single engine dive bomber that made its maiden flight in 1940. When WWII came to an end, SAAB started to look at other markets that could fill up the gap from the military product line. Several areas were investigated, such as kitchen equipment, leisure boats, prefabricated houses and motorcycles. At the end it was decided that a small modern car for the common people should be the best choice, since there seemed to be an increasing demand of those products in the post war time.

The prototype (Ur-SAAB) was built in 1946 in Linköping at the airplane workshop and used for harsh test drives around Sweden. That experience was used to develop the SAAB 92, and later on a unit from the test series was shown official for press and specially invited guests at the SAAB staff cantina Restau- rant Terrassen on the 10th of june 1947. Serial production of the car was placed in Trollhättan for several reasons, but one obvious aspect was the fact that the buildings of Trollhättan site soon needed costly investments as they gradually had come to the limit for airplane manufacturing when the planes rapidly grow bigger in size.

Later on, the station wagon SAAB 95 was also assembled and manufactured in Linköping, all the way from the first test production in 1959 (with early body prototype tools made in wood that where put in the hydraulic expanding die, the Quintus press that was used for airplane development) up until normal production year 1963, when all the available capacity again was needed for airplane production.

Another car that was built in prototype series was five of the six SAAB 94 Sonett 1 (a k a “Super Sport”). Also test series of other civilian products, like small boats and hovercrafts were built in Linköping, and not far from Linköping in its neighboring city of Norrköping the small caravan SAABO was built. But then there is also the important and well known trademark for SAAB GT, Sport and Monte Carlo for us to highlight; The wooden steering wheel manufacturing.

So even if Linköping is mostly known from SAABs world leading airplane designs, all the way to the new SAAB Gripen E presented this year, the airplane builders and designers in Linköping has had a significant impact on the SAAB cars.
